Raw Story (sometimes RAWSTORY) is a progressive website. It not only reports on breaking news within minutes from when stories are published elsewhere, but importantly they also provide summaries of the article in addition links to the original. This is especially helpful since they cover news on subscription websites like The New York Times, Washington Post, and Wall Street Journal.
Across the top of the page on the left are trending stories, in the center are stories that editors deem to be the most significant, and on the right breaking news.
Not only that, they cross publish many articles from Salon which is free to read but doesn't have a comments section while Raw Story does. Thus readers are able to comment on Salon stories. The Raw Story Disqus comment section enables readers to use bold, italics, etc. and post illustrations. There are often spirited debates in the comment sections and snarky illustrated posts. An example of these shown below.
Raw Story owns AlterNet and also cross publishes their stories.
Over the past year they have added more columnists such as David Edwards, Travis Getty, Sarah Burris, and Tom Boggioni. They write thought provoking essays. They also recently hired staff reporters who cover Capitol Hill and report on interviews with politicians.
They publish stories from the Agence France-Presse wire service.

Raw Story + Exclusives is a subscription part of the website which includes Raw Story Investigates. It costs $49 a year or $79 annually for a version with no ads. I have the former.
