  • Me Undies

4/9/22

These are darling, ridiculously overpriced, iffy quality undies. I ordered two because I love supporting small businesses. They are super thin, cheap material, very cute design, and RIDICULOUSLY over priced at $20 apiece! Seriously? One washing and they look tired. For fringing $20 I could find sets 6 in this fabric. Just a total rip…. Wish it weren't so…..

Nomorobo was one of the three 2013 winners of the FTC Robocall Challenge. According to PC magazine's 2015 review of the site, it's the only winner that has a service up and running on the web, and it's FREE! It does not work for cell phones or for analog landline services. But for all other landline services, it works. Supposedly. Hey, it it did for me -- instantly! I signed up yesterday, and I've gone from 10 robocalls a day (minimum) to zero. I hear one brief ring and then blessed silence. It's a MIRACLE! And this just in time for onslaught of political robocalls that were about to crash down on my peace of mind like an avalanche. I am SO THRILLED!

For a more technical POV, here is an excerpt from that Sept. 2015 PC Magazine review:

"The good news is that Nomorobo is free, easy to sign up with, and works as promised. I used to get at least one or two robocalls per day. The only sign of them now is that the phone rings once. If I'm curious, I can go to my Verizon FiOS account online, see the calling number, and search for it in a browser. So far, every blocked call has been from a known robocaller, with the number also showing up in my online searches on assorted sites that track annoying calls.

The bad news is that you may not be able to take advantage of Nomorobo. Ideally, it should be directly integrated into the carrier's internal call processing, which is what Ooma Premier and Sonic do. And in principle, it should be able to work with any carrier. All it requires is that the carrier support simultaneous ring, so incoming calls can ring both your line and Nomorobo's line at the same time. In practice, unfortunately, that feature is currently available only on VoIP carriers, and not even all of those.

The list of carriers that work with Nomorobo has some significant players on it, including Verizon FiOS, Comcast Xfinity, Time Warner Cable, and AT&T U-verse. (You can find the full list on the Nomorobo signup page.) Missing, however, are all wireless carriers and all analog carriers. So although it works with Verizon FiOS, it won't work with Verizon Wireless or standard Verizona plain old telephone service (POTS) line to those who follow such things."

It took me a bit of work to sign up on Nomorobo.com. I had to sign into my Verizon account (find the online ID, password, blah blah) and then follow the steps the site listed. But was it worth it! I just can't understand why I haven't heard about this service before. I guess the truth is it's free, which means not much revenue, which means no advertising. I suppose they have grants or government funding perhaps? In any case, I wish I'd know about this site sooner -- it is WONDERFUL!

  • Tripadvisor

I adore Tripadvisor! This site is like having a wise, omnipotent world traveler in your back pocket. There is so much terrific information on this site and it literally covers the world. AWESOME and IRREPLACEABLE Of course, you have to keep in mind that there are cheats out there gaming the system, which means a number of these reviews, both good and bad, can be fake. This means the actual rankings are often meaningless. You know, DD ranks higher than a towns beloved gourmet gem. Go to a town you know well and glance through the reviews. You'll get a good idea of what's going on. There are tons of excellent, real reviews, but you have to get used to ignoring the rankings and delving in a bit deeper.

As far as booking travel through TripAvisor, I don't use their booking links. I stopped booking hotel rooms and flights through third party sites like Expedia and Travelocity years ago. I got very tired of having a booking website middleman involved in these transactions. I'd call to cancel and have to go through the website support (nonexistent) instead of the hotel, or discover I couldn't cancel at all like a normal hotel guest would be able to. Plus I never found a booking website that offered better US TRAVEL deals than than the US hotel, airlines and car rental websites. NOTE: I have had largely negative experiences trying to directly book hotels, airlines, and car rentals when traveling in Europe. I still would not reccomend the trip advisor linked booking websites (Expedia etc), but I have used AirBnB, HomeAway, SkyScanner, and AutoEurope when traveling in Europe with great success.
So I don't do any bookings through TripAdvisor, but I CONSTANTLY lean on this site for reviews and advise. Thank you TripAdvisor for being my ever present travel buddy!

Update: Just stayed at another awesome five star AirBnB. This stay was a week in the Netherlands. Amazing hosts, gorgeous big light airy loft with a kitchenette, dining space, balcony with cafe table, and a view from heaven! $90 a night. These were gold metal, top rated hosts, and they totally deserved their rating. I repeat: look for the raves reviews and ONLY book those hosts. ONLY
I spent two wonderful five day stays in Europe using AirBnB. Perfect places, awesome landlords, great experiences! After reading all these negative Nancy reviews I just had to put in my two cents worth here.
Simply put, this is all on you renters. You have the INTERNET. Awesome tool this thing. Use it and do your research. When you find a listing that interests you, for cripes sake read ALL the reviews. Judiciously. Bad reviews? Don't book. No reviews? Don't book! Google map the place. You can look at the street view and area. Safe? Dicey? Easy access to where you want to be? Consider those pictures on the web site. Gorgeous view? Old building? No lift?. Ok, you are looking at a 5 floor walk up with luggage. Know that. Does everyone rave about the landlord being helpful and available? Good sign. All five stars? Good sign. I've had nothing but wonderful experiences with AirBnB, but it isn't idiot proof, and of course nothing is perfect. Use your head and it can open the doors to some amazing adventures. I LOVED my experience, and my hosts. They all had numerous five star reviews. I gave them two more!

Just spent a week in Tuscany on a HomeAway vacation. It was PERFECT, as were our previous vacations booked on this site. After reading all these negative Nancy reviews I had to put in my two cents worth here.
