  • Office Depot

9/26/15

I like the selection that OfficeDepot has, but i dislike the prices. More often than not, the same exact product is available at another store for less money. I dont use OfficeDepot much any more. I usually just use the store locations to try office furniture before I purchase it.

Tip for consumers:
Check other stores before purchasing.

  • Forgotten Weapons

9/21/15

This is THE website for information regarding obscure, rare and "forgotten" weapons. While almost all of the review and write-ups on the site are for firearms, there are a few great write ups on accessories and attachments, my favorite being the video review on WWI trench armor.
ForgottenWeapons also has a YouTube channel, in which he visits auction houses (Mainly Rock Island and James D. Julia) and collectors to review many amazing pieces of war and peacetime history. Recently, ForgottenWeapons had the opprotunity to review a prototype Pancor Jackhammer, which is possibly the only Jackhammer still surviving!

There are many great reviews and articles on the site. I highly recommend anybody who is interested in firearms or history to visit Forgottenweapons.com for accurate information and great videos.

Tip for consumers:
Becoming a Patron on Patreon iswell worth it in my opinion. You get more access to great reviews and information starting at one dollar per month.

  • LinusTechTips

This is one of the best communities/forums related to computers and technology! Linus Sebastian and crew are knowledgeable about computing and technology and are able to relate that knowledge in a very easy to understand fashion. The community members who also use the site are generally very pleasant and willing to answer your questions. The LinusTechTips crew posts helpful guides that make picking parts and assembly a breeze. I HIGHLY suggest watching the videos they upload to the LinusTechTips YouTube channel because they are full of accurate information and are presented in an easy to watch format. Even when i am not building a computer in the near future, I tend to frequently visit both the website and the YouTube channel so i can stay up to date with the latest technology. I also recommend watching the Scrapyard Wars series on which they build crazy pc's using unconventional parts or methods.

Tip for consumers:
I recommend becoming a member on the website and subscribing on youtube to keep up to date with the LinusMediaGroup.

  • Newegg

9/13/15

There are many different aspects to an e-commerce website. Newegg gets most of the shopping aspects right.

Customer Support- Customer support is the same never ending loop that other sites offer. Whether you are speaking over the phone or wasting your time with the email/chat service, be prepared to state your situation MULTIPLE times. Most of the times, the service reps are not listening to you when you talk, this is evident when they ask you stupid questions like "did you check with neighbors" or "could another member of your family have picked it up" after you just spent several minuets explaining that you already checked with both your family and neighbors. One rep even asked me twice if a family member could have gotten it when i stated the first time that I LIVED ALONE.
Customer support jobs seem to be filled by people with very little technical knowledge. Newegg doesnt offer phone, email or chat tech support. This is really a pain when purchasing from a tech website. The least they could do was hire people who are technologically literate.

Price- The prices are usually very competitive. On this aspect, newegg gets it right. Newegg does offer a price matching service, but i can havent needed to use them very often. On some items, the price match guarantee is valid even after the purchase which is a nice touch.

Marketplace- The marketplace is for the most part a joke. The sellers have next to no accountability from newegg. Usually the best answer you can get from Newegg regarding a marketplace transaction is to contact the seller. Really? Thats it? Thats all you can do? Considering the majority of the marketplace sellers i have dealt with choose not to respond, this is not at all a solution. WIth these transactions, purchase using a credit card or paypal, that way you are covered and can get your money back that way. They just really just dont care about bad marketplace transactions.

Shipping- Shipping is also, for the most part, done correctly. From my experience, newegg will usually send you a pre-paid shipping label for faulty products. If Newegg doesnt offer you a label, you probably just need to contact them and plead your case. It may be tough, but it is worth your time in most situations. For products that arent faulty, you have to pay the return shipping. This is the industry norm, but still kinda sucks if it, for instance, wasnt compatable with your machine or wasnt as described in the listing.

Overall, Newegg is a decent e-tailer and has some great prices.

Tip for consumers:
Have a working knowledge of what it is your purchasing, because newegg doesnt offer tech support.

  • Amazon

9/10/15

As somebody who only purchases items from Amazon themselves (no third party sellers), I am disapointed with the amount of counterfeit items i have received. Do yourself a favor, and buy things that are easily counterfeit ( phone cases, sd cards, earbuds etc) in person.
I purchased three Speck branded phone cases from amazon. They were of decent construction, but two of them cracked after being dropped from about knee height. I sent them back to speck because they were supposed to be under warranty. Speck called me and told me to send them back to who i bought them from because they were fakes. Its funny, Amazon would not take them back. Their reasoning? They do not allow returns on counterfeit goods.
I purchase many things from amazon. My experience with counterfeits has not soured my overall experience with Amazon. I just caution you to buy things that are easily counterfeit in person, or better yet, just buy them straight from the manufacturer.

  • GameStop

9/10/15

Gamestop could be much worse. The prices are usually somewhat decent, and the selection is on par with many of the other game retailers. The staff however is usually pretty awful. I have found that they will lie to you just to make a sale. I never take what the employees say at face value. This is mainly because i was told the Logitech G930 will not work with pc and that i will need to buy a second headset made for pc. (Even though it says the G930s will on the box)

  • DirecTV

9/8/15

I have no experience with the DirecTV service that is now owned by ATT.

I really liked DirecTV. I found that the amount of channels and quality of service was on par with the local cable companies. I haven't really experienced to many outages because of stormy weather. I found that when the weather is stormy, the cable companies have outages as well. I have very few complaints, but the major complaint i do have is the customer service. I cannot understand the majority of the indian call center reps. I know it is more expensive, but is it really worth it to save a little bit of money even though the call center employees are so hard to understand? I would rather pay a few dollars more and be able to understand and easily communicate with the person i am speaking with.
