About Me

After a long career in auto repair, and a shorter career in home building, remodel, and repair, I sort of fell into cashiering, a job I'd never even considered but discovered that I really enjoyed the customer interaction. So that temporary job stretched out to 5 years before I finally retired a year ago. Gay and single, living with 3 cats. Quite a picture, no?

How I Can Help

I'm a dedicated consumer advocate who detests deceptive advertising. Most of my jobs involved quite a bit of customer service, so I know it when I see it and it's becoming rare. The customer is NOT always right, but even then, a little compassion and diplomacy goes a long way toward resolving an issue to their satisfaction.

Interests

Fast cars, cooking, electronic gadgets, and thrift stores.

My shoe size is rare enouigh the IF a shoe store has ANYTHING that fits me, it will always be a black dress shoe (at a premium price). However, twice I've found the shoes I wanted for a very reasonable price at Zappos. And they shipped immediately.
Price, selection, and service - all at one store. Amazing!

I've bought tons of stuff from amazon, starting soon after they opened. Their prices usually can't be beat unless you find a special sale somewhere else, but what really keeps me going back is their reliability and a true commitment to customer service. Of course I've had a few things go wrong, but Amazon is usually very quick to make it right, and if they don't, they WILL keep trying until they do, So many other businesses talk big about customer service. But that's just their euphemism for customer abuse.

My initial complaint was that Nextdoor included 30 surrounding neighborhoods, making it too big. However, I discovered that you can specify which neighborhoods are included in your "feed", which makes it much more relevant. Of course, some of the posts are just crazy or stupid or worthless, as are some of the comments, but these are easily recognized and skipped over, and there are plenty of useful posts and discussions to make the site worthwhile. And if you've lost a pet or need help, the response can restore your faith in humanity.

Too big, too invasive

During sign-up, nextdoor wanted access to my contact list and would not proceed without it, but I saw no valid reason for them to need that and refused to betray the trust of everyone on that list. I stopped at that point and sent a message to nextdoor. They never replied, Update: They never said anything about my refusal to give access to my contact list, but they did approve my membership. Now that I've used the site, I discovered that my "neighborhood" includes about 30 surrounding neighborhoods, so most of the people aren't even close to being "nextdoor". There are some nice features, but overall my reaction is still "meh".

True, they have a lot of designer goods, but even at 25% discount, $4,000 for a handbag?

Obvious typos in article titles: "anawer"? (answer)
"calculations" with absurd results: 35 calories in an entire can of cat food? (The label says 192)

Tip for consumers:
Don't waste your time

... I feel like I can't trust anything. The product, a hair trimmer, was the "deal of the day" (50% off) "ends in 00:45:00" (and counting down). The current time was 05:35, and thinking that it would be pretty strange for a day in any time zone to end at xx: 20, I watched their count-down clock hit 00:00:00, reset to 00:45:00, and the "deal" was on again. I liked the product, and the "deal" price seemed reasonable, but I can't support any site that tries to play me for a fool.

First I had to install a web search extension, then another extension. Seemed unlikely that I was ever going to get to the promise of finding user manuals so I uninstalled their extensions.

From the Google search, this site looked very promising, but turned out to be a total waste of my time. Even the promised owner's manual was not for the model in my search. Bait and switch!

I was interested in seeing what my options were for an ISP, so I thought "The Best Internet Service Providers of 2018" on TopTenReviews would be helpful. However, even tho the article claims "LATEST UPDATE JANUARY 28,2018", I discovered that several of the ISP's no longer exist and the info they provided on my current ISP (Cox) is out of date by at least 5 to 10 years. (Fastest d/l speed available is 50 MBPS at $59.95 / mo.?) I wrote to "TopTen" asking about their interpretation of "update", but of course I got no reply. Based on this experience, I could not trust ANY review on that site.

Their Facebook page allows no public posts and although they promise a quick response to messages, mine was totally ignored. They also have a Google + page, where public posts are allowed, but the site is totally unmonitored, so it's become inundated with spammers spamming spammers.

They do have a "free" lifetime membership, which allows you to post your profile, and look at the other profiles, BUT you can not contact ANY other member, in ANY way. Their FAQ states that a basic (free) member can send "hook up now" invitations, but that's a lie. Twice, I tried to contact "customer service" about this, but they just ignored me. I was getting tons of messages and hook-up invitations from young hot guys, (which seemed pretty improbable) but I couldn't respond in any way without upgrading my membership. I checked their TOS, and discovered that they post fake profiles that they call "ONLINE EMISSARIES". They do allow you to opt out of participation in that program, so I did that to see if the interest in me continued, But my request to opt out just resulted in having my account and profile deleted! So, I spent a lot of time and got nothing, but thankfully, "nothing" IS free.

Tip for consumers:
Don't even consider trying this site. I just discovered that this same company has 18 other, nearly identical dating sites!
