We loath ZEARN
February 7, 2025

Imagine this, you get on your computer and get on a lovely site that is actually fun, interesting, and makes sense. That is the exact opposite of Zearn. Zearn is a crazy company that will rot a child's brain, and makes problems like 2 + 2 too complicated.
For example, when you first log in to Zearn, you have to do a "Number gym," exercise with super annoying math problems like "addition magician." I know how to add 3+18, so why are they making it so difficult? They make us split the three into two and one, if you don't put the numbers in the right order, they will make you restart the whole lesson! Zearn adds too many steps to your lessons to the point where it doesn't even make sense. I think it would be better if they show the BEST way to answer instead of making a billion steps.
There is another "Number Gym" called "Count the Cosmo's." In this activity you skip count. Ok, I get it, skip counting is important, but for 5th graders! No, I don't think that 5th graders have to work on skip counting every two days when we have been practicing it for over five years! Additionally if you get a skip counting question wrong, you have to restart the whole activity. Can you imagine how annoying it is to have to start over if you accidentally miss click or get something wrong!
Also, sometimes, in the middle of a lesson, the site will just restart, or when you almost finish a lesson, it will stop saving and say "unable to save." This is so annoying, because we spend lots of time on that one lesson then we just have to restart.
After you somehow finish that part of the lesson, you will continue to "Blast" which will review a part of the lesson (not really). One of the activities in "Blast" is "Sprint." In Sprint you will have one minute to answer an infinite list of questions. This part of the lesson is not super bad, but it is a HUGE waste of time. For example, after you finish the "Sprint," you will check your answers and re-answer the questions that you miss, which I understand. If you get a good score, you have to do a bonus round, Which is just doing "Sprint" two times. It's as if you get a punishment for doing well!
When you finish "Blast," you move on to your actual lesson, this is where it gets even more annoying. The lesson is basically a video that has a bunch of pausing points in the lesson where you do math. But the math is so complicated! They want us to way more than we should. For example, they want us to do so many math problems that take two steps a billion! Why are we still using Zearn!
In addition to that, Zearn makes people cry and almost break their chrome books! There is this one student that cries so often because of Zearn. My whole class wants to stop using Zearn.
The last part of the Zearn lesson is horrible and called "The Tower of Power." Here there is a "tower" that you have to climb with each question right. But if you get it wrong you have to try again then if you get it wrong again, it gives you a "boost," A boost is were Zearn will help you (not really)But the thing is, it will restart you on whatever section you are on and act as if you don't know anything and you did not just spend one hour trying to learn stuff in Zearn.
Even though Zearn is non-profit, and has mostly "good reviews."
Sometimes even my TEACHERS do not understand what Zearn's doing. They all said they did math a different way growing up, and they're math teachers. I believe their experience is important, and teaching us how they learned is better than all of Zearn's lessons.
This is why I think Zearn is a bad application for school's to use. Math class used to be fun, but now, it is not because of Zearn.

Why I hate zearn.

Customer Support
Zearn

Dear Zearn Team,
I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to express some concerns and feedback regarding my experience with the Zearn platform. While I appreciate the mission and innovative approach that Zearn brings to mathematics education, I have encountered several challenges that I believe could be addressed to enhance the user experience for both students and educators. One of the most significant challenges I have faced is the user interface. While I understand that the platform is designed to be intuitive, I have found it to be somewhat confusing, particularly for younger students. Navigation between lessons and activities can be unclear, which sometimes leads to frustration. I believe that a more streamlined and visually engaging interface could greatly improve the overall experience for users. I have experienced several technical glitches while using the Zearn platform. For instance, there have been instances where the platform has lagged significantly or even crashed during critical lessons. This not only disrupts the learning process but also causes frustration for students who are eager to engage with the material. Consistent performance and reliability are crucial for an effective online learning experience. As an educator, I value the ability to customize lessons and track student progress. However, I have found that the current options for customization within Zearn are limited. It would be beneficial to have more flexibility in tailoring lessons to meet the diverse needs of students. Furthermore, providing more detailed analytics on student performance would allow educators to identify areas for improvement and adjust their teaching strategies accordingly. While Zearn provides some support resources, I feel that there is a lack of comprehensive materials to help educators effectively implement the program in their classrooms. Additional resources such as detailed lesson plans, video tutorials, and best practice guides would be incredibly valuable. These resources could help educators maximize the potential of the platform and enhance student engagement. Feedback is a crucial component of the learning process, yet I have found that the feedback mechanisms within Zearn are not as robust as they could be. Providing immediate, actionable feedback to students as they work through problems is essential for their learning. I would appreciate more features that allow for timely feedback and assessments to help guide student learning effectively. In my attempts to address some of these issues, I have reached out to your support team. While I appreciate their efforts, the response time has been longer than expected. Timely communication is essential for resolving issues quickly, especially when they impact student learning. I suggest improving response times and possibly providing a more direct line of communication for urgent matters. In today's educational landscape, the ability to integrate with other educational tools is vital. I have found that Zearn's compatibility with other platforms is limited. Expanding integration options would not only streamline the educational experience but also allow for a more holistic approach to learning. While Zearn's curriculum is well-structured, there are times when I have noticed a misalignment with state standards. Ensuring that the content is consistently updated and aligned with current educational standards is essential for maintaining the program's credibility and effectiveness. In conclusion, I want to reiterate that I value the work that Zearn is doing in the field of education. The platform has the potential to be a transformative tool for students and educators alike. However, addressing the issues outlined above would significantly enhance the user experience and support the educational community more effectively.

I hope that you will take this feedback into consideration as you continue to develop and improve the Zearn platform. I believe that with some adjustments, Zearn can become an even more valuable resource for mathematics education.
Thank you for your attention to these matters. I look forward to seeing how Zearn evolves in the future.
Sincerely,
Mariah
