“Hughesnet experience”

Robin M.
12/2/20

I have found the customer service very helpful. In this day and age of technology, businesses have to continually work to upgrade and stay current. Hughesnet internet equipment is in part obsolete. Smart tv's do not have ethernet capability... yet, Hughesnet system provides ethernet cables to enhance their product. They are useless if you own a smart tv. This and the fact that only a slow 25 mps/10G is offered at the same price as cable high speed internet unlimited at 200 mps which makes Hughesnet very expensive. However, Hughesnet is more for rural locations that cable does not reach and because of this fact I think Hughesnet charges more. Understanding the basics before you enlist this service goes a long way in customer satisfaction. Going in with a good attitude, being agreeable and willing to work with customer service makes it a much nicer experience.

HughesNet earns the title of the worst ISP with its agonizingly slow speeds, a data cap that vanishes in the blink of an eye, rendering it a deceptive promise. Rain transforms your connection into an intermittent ghost, leaving you without internet for an entire hour. Add to this the routine router resets due to unpredictable connectivity woes, and you've got a service that consistently disappoints.

The company is pretty bad and their internet connection is not any better. After random fees, we end up paying $200 for internet advertised at $105. We supposedly pay $200 for 25+ MB/s speeds. I commonly get less than a mb of download on a very regular basis. The other day very late at night, I had a peak of 50 KB per second. Not Megabytes, KILOBYTES. WE pay $200 for that. I have also seen people complaining that HughesNet will cull your bandwith and remaining data when the wifi isn't being used. Evil company

Satellite internet is much faster than dialup but... you need to weigh out your options when choosing this. This is very expensive if you do not need the speed.

The service was good but expensive. The major problems is no service during storms and snow. This would not be a good option if you live in a VERY snowy area. If you do not need the extra speed stick with dialup it is cheaper and more reliable.

Its the worst internet in the world, they have a huge cancellation fee for a reason, they knew they would loose al their customers if they’re cancellation fee wasn’t that much.

DO NOT USE THIS INTERNET! You have been warned! They should be fined and shut down for false advertising. This is horrible internet. I have issues from the beginning and it has never gotten any better. I get a few hours a month of so-so service and then it's gone. It slows down to the point of being utterly unusable. They blamed it on my computers and smart TV's and PlayStation! NO $#*! that's why I have
Internet! SMDH ridiculous!

Tip for consumers:
They charge a whopping $385 to cancel but it is worth it not to pay for no internet at all!

I cancelled my service in November and unplugged the system. It was unpowered and DISCONNECTED! IN December I received an alert that I only had 3% of data left and I should purchase tokens. Total scam. Makes me question how many times they did that to me and other people over the years.

Great service for areas where dialup is your only option. I switched from Peoplepc and am thrilled. I have had the service for almost a year now. Read the details on the website. You are NOT getting high speed all you can eat type internet service. You have download and upload limits that are imposed by the government. Be sure you understand what you are getting before you sign up.

Hughes net is NOT for gamers. There is lag time on satellite service that makes it impossible to play real time games. By the time your computer has caught up with the last persons move its too late for you to react. Don't even try it! You will be unhappy.

Hughesnet is also NOT for people who do a lot of video watching online, Downloads of movies etc. You just DON'T have the usage for it. Again, you are not going to be happy.

What Hughesnet IS good for is general browsing, checking your email, research, school work, forums, sending photos etc to family. It works great on sites like Ancestry.com where you need to look at scanned documents. So much faster than dialup.

Know what you are getting before you buy so you will not be unhappy. The website give you ALL the information you need to make your decision. They want you happy too! If you are stuck on dialup give them a chance.

The website offers a lot of different options. You get email addresses with your service. The only thing I consistently use on the website is checking where I am at on my usage. There are very helpful tools to do so and also a download for a usage meter on your desktop.

This "Internet" service is akin to 56K dial up WiFi from the 90s. And by all means, do not try and contact customer service because you'll be waiting for over an hour consistently to simply get hung up on when someone does answer the phone. Further, they will not allow you to cancel due to their $600 cancellation fee. The only services that require a contract these days are predatory services that are well aware their services are subpar. I would rate this a 0 but that is impossible on the site.

The customer service representative wanted to read a sales pitch when I called to cancel. I explained that I was at lunch from work and just wanted to cancel my service. She hung up on me after I had to wait almost 30 minutes before talking to her and being passed around to different representatives. I would not ever recommend this company to anyone and I would go without the internet before using them ever again.

We had hughesnet for 6 years because we live in a very rural area and had no other choice. We call to cancel and that went ok so they send us a box to send their equipment back.We did that via UPS like it said.Got a bill from them for over $300 charging us for equipment we already sent back. Please avoid them at all cost.We now have starlink and it's wonderful.

Please save yourself a headache. They get you to agree to 24 months. My wifi was sketchy from day one. The tech told me he hadn't done this type of work I'm a long time. It worked a few times. Then winter happened. Snow and rain. I haven't had wifi in months. They keep scheduling appointments for a tech to come fix it. No one shows up. Yet, Hughesnet takes my money, every month.
Look for a better more reliable solution. This Hughesnet is a Huge rip off.

Very poor internet slow speeds and throttling your speed down at night. Hidden termination fees that even if you transfer your account from one state to another they set you up on a two year contract claiming early termination is 250.00 dollars. Monthly 90 dollars for bel I w standard or even advertised speeds. Very bad business would never recommend hughesnet to anyone.

I can tell you that when my father-in-law died and we turned off his internet service, they acted like they were helpful and sent a box to return the equipment and gave us a very reasonable amount of time to return it, compared to dish network. However, THEY DID NOT SEND A LABEL even though the instructions and the website said a shipping label is included! We called and were told that we could take it to any UPS and they could send it out "as is".

WRONG! The UPS Store said that many people had come in saying that exact thing and that UPS did not have a contract with Hughesnet. What losers! If you aren't going to pay for the return shipping, don't pretend you are! Just be straight forward about it! They didn't even provide the address to ship the equipment to (of course not, they want $500) so I made the guy on the phone spell everything out letter by letter because I couldn't understand what he was saying when I called to tell him what we discovered about the LABEL SCAM! He didn't even try to deny it, by the way.

After reading MANY other reviews, I wonder can't help but wonder, if his bank accounts hadn't been frozen, would the money would have been stolen from him anyway, even though we sent everything back? We ended up going to the post office & paying $25 (money well spent!) to send it insured for $500 & with tracking info. The day after USPS showed it had been delivered his online Hughesnet account login no longer worked & the profile on their community that I was hoping to use to warn other customers with COMPLETELY disappeared! No acknowledgment of thanks or anything! If we hadn't been told able the LABEL SCAM by the guy at the UPS store, we would still be trying to play their game & waiting for a label thinking they were legit.

Once you enter into a contract, they'll do anything in their power to strong-arm you into not leaving. They will flat out lie to you. I would avoid this company at all cost. I switched over to T-Mobile for $50 a month and have a far better service. Hughesnet was charging me $121 a month for Internet that barely worked.

If I could give zero stars I would. I went with Hugh's net cause it was the only internet company to service my area. We had it for less than 2 months. Service was horrible spent more time buffering than anything could watch tv for a solid 2 minutes and would buffer again. Was not informed about a contract when first signed up nor a fee for not returning equipment. When I called to cancel still did not tell me about being charged for cancellation and the lady I spoke with wanted to argue with me about canceling my service. Today I checked my bank and they had pulled out money when service had already been canceled months ago and had been pulling out money and refusing to refund since the cancellation. When I called they refused to refund my money and said it was a valid charge for me canceling. Be careful going through Hughs net

Horrible company. I Set it up for my father They took the liberty of putting it in my name. Multiple phone calls for hours each time, did nothing to resolve the issue of taking my name off the account. After my father passed away and the account was cancelled, they say there is still a balance on his account and now they are coming after me with a collections agency. I've been passed around to 7 different people at this point. Each one states they have resolved the problem. What a circus. I don't know how they stay in business!

Went two years with poor service finally cancelled service. Charged me for not going on the roof to return dish to them. 219.00. They said then that they would come and remove but at this point I don't trust them - They would probably damage my roof which would cost me more than 219.00. I would just rather be done with them. Beware in ******* zip code. Do not use their service.

The worst experience EVER! Multiple calls on the crappy internet service and the customer service team barely speaks English so after being on the phone for over 45 mins all 8 times, I ended up just hanging up out of pure frustration. And when you try to cancel, you have to fight them just to cancel your service. Hands down, the most horrible experience - from all aspects

$130+ I'm paying for the slowest most unreliable service I've ever used. Problem is, they are ONLY commercially available service where I live. They don't tell you that can't use cell over Wifi. So I got a landline through them (another $20/mo.) It drops calls left and right even when I'm in same room as modem. Their upload/download speeds are insufferably slow! I put in an order for Starlink last October, waiting for them to roll out now. When it goes in I will drop HN in a NY minute and I will NOT honor my 2 year contract, as they have not lived up to their advertised promises. They can sue me and lose.

They offer UP to 25 mbps for 60$ a month. This is highway robbery at the highest degree. The internet is weak, patchy and they are pocketing tons of money off their customers. We live in the country and found that nextlink offers I know 200mbps fixed wireless. Even they are not the best but way better than this. Don't waste your money and take this review serious.

TWO YEAR CONTRACT. Speeds not as paid for, service is off when there is a storm system between Florida and Arizona ( this is literally what I was told!). When guests come over for holidays or any weekend night plus Friday, the service buffers awfully and you literally cannot watch anything. It is very embarrassing. Extremely expensive for what you ACTUALLY get. Tech support is of no help at all, they can't make it work any better because of the limitations of the entire Hughes set up. If you talk to the offshore customer service crew, they can't suggest anything but upgrading your plan to get better service. I have read the reviews of the people who got tricked into that, same problems for a lot more money. Please read reviews and save yourself the hassle. Two years is a VERY long time to put up with this lack of quality. Better Business Bureau receives so many complaints they say they only publish 1 out of 20, check that out. Stay Away.
