Rented a car from Avis at palm beach airport…returned it 1/12/24. Received letter today saying that it was returned with dog hair and they were going to charge my credit card $450! Called to say no way, I had no animal near that car! Looked at pictures that were taken and they said "oops" you got that letter in error, it was a different person😡-no apology or anything!

Vehicle Rental Experience: A Cautionary Tale
Preamble: A loyal customer with over 1000 rentals and a top-tier membership status, I expected to redeem my 36,000 points for a simple one-way truck rental from Las Vegas to Raleigh.
Objective: Leverage loyalty points for a cost-effective, one-way rental.
Experience: The company's app malfunctioned, and in-person assistance led to hours of wasted time, conflicting information, and a refusal to honor my points. Customer service (telephone) was a carousel of incompetence, with representatives providing false information, refused to speak with supervisors, and calls ending in hang-ups.
Conclusion: Avis's disregard for customer loyalty and absence of a complaint department is unacceptable. The final insult was an erroneous charge of $1400 for a service quoted at $850 that was never correctly provided. Avis's failure to rectify their mistake or offer a genuine resolution is indicative of a systemic issue within their customer service operations.
Final Verdict: Avoid Avis at all costs. Their outsourced customer service lacks empowerment and accountability, leading to a frustrating and fruitless experience. In my case it was a downright illegal theft venture by a well-known company. Test what I say is true, call yourself and ask to speak with a complaint department, not customer service as customer service will not help you if you find yourself in a situation like mine.

Preferred customer with a prepaid reservation. Show up to pick up car and there is NO car available. There are NO cars at any nearby locations either. We had to scramble to change our trip plans. When you take money for a product you can't provide that is STEALING!

I booked a car with Avis and prepaid my reservation. When I returned the car they charged my card for an extra $1,000. They said the base rate had changed. I showed them the Avis email confirmation that stated what the base rate was that I agreed to pay. They said they can change it. I wouldn't have booked with them had I known that and I have never experienced that with any other rental company. SO BEWARE OF AVIS, they'll just charge your card for whatever amount they feel like despite anything they may have quoted you.

Freak team! I rented a car and paid in advance. Then I tried to contact the rental office for 5 days to find out if they accept cash for payment.

I made 39 calls to the Serbian office! 39 times, Carl! Nobody answered me. And then one day before the rental, suddenly someone picks up the phone and says that cash is not accepted.

As a result, I have to cancel my booking and lose 50€, my precious time and nerves.

Just a winner for worst customer service. Numbers I called: +381 11 2097 062, +381 11 3676 644. Give me back my money!

I have rented exclusivily with Avis for a long time. Never had a problem, UNTIL NOW.
2 weeks after returning home from Colorado Springs. (Rental #U*******) Picked up Tuscon, dropped off Colorado Springs
I received a letter from Nora Henry at Avis Operations Team, telling me they were charging me $450 for cleaning, stating there was smoke smell.
Neither my wife or I smoke, and we were the only ones in the car through the entire rental. This is TotaL BS. We had the car for a week, and there was NO smoke in the car, and there was NO smell when we returned it.
When we returned the car to Colorado Springs, we had to walk the key to the rental booth as there was nobody at the return aisle to check us in.
There was an Avis woman standing outside the booth. I had accidently grabbed an Avis pamphlet when I took my paperwork out of the glovebox. When she came back in the booth, she told me I had to put the pamphlet back in the car. I told her we were in a hurry and asked if she could just have one of their people put it back in the car. She was super rude, and without even saying anything, she walked back out of the booth, and walked all the way to the car to put the pamphlet back. She made us wait the entire time, outside in 25 degree cold, as she was doing it, and slowly walked back to finish checking us out. She KNEW I told her we were in a hurry.
I have never been treated so rude, and will now take my business to Hertz.
This charge is totally made up, and I would think by the totally rude person checking us out.
Bye Bye Avis. Obviously my years of loyalty to you meant nothing!

I don't think you could be a worse company than Avis. I spent a $160 in Ubers going from location to location to pick up my prepaid reservation. I was continually assured there was a car but there were NO cars. And Avis loves their customers so much that they will maybe refund your money in 5 to 10 days! Won't even go into the rudeness I experienced from employees! Epic!

I was quoted $300.
They told me it would be an extra $300 for taxes and fees.
Another $300 for being underage (I had to re-explain my age and have them look at my license in their hand to get this charge removed).
Another $300 deposit.
I was told they would charge me the $300 deposit now then settle up at the end. (I assumed that meant they'd charge me only $300 right then).
They gave me a bill for $600.
They took $900 out of my account.
Then they gave me a car with a dired flyer stuck to the windshield.
They will not give me my deposit back until days after my vacation so my trip was essentially ruined. Upon posting my review Avis customer service contacted me. Outcome of contact by Avis customer service came out to condescending email letting me know they will email my receipt to me...so, no improvement on customer service or predatory business practices.
UPDATE-
I was contacted again and told all additional charges would be refunded to me. I have not received this refund yet but I have faith in the company's dedication to their word.

I made my reservation online four days ago. At 3:00 p.m. today, I went to Avis on Main Street in downtown Kansas City to pick up the vehicle. Victor and his significant other asked for my credit card and driver's license. Immediately, they told me we don't accept that credit card. I told him I had reserved the car with it online and was charged. So, I suggested my debit card. Victor asked me for my credit score, and I told him 724, and Victor said you should be approved. Then he did a credit check, and Equifax did not approve me. He said, "It must be debt to income ratio." Then, Victor asked me for a voucher code when I reserved the car online. I told him I did not receive a voucher code but only a reservation number. So, Victor told me he could not rent to me or use another major credit car for the car, plus $250.00. Then, he told me I had done something wrong when I made the reservation online on October 16th. So, I called AVIS when I got home, and Andrea told me I did not need a voucher code but just the reservation. So I suggested that she call Victor at the Main Street location while on the phone to confirm that I did not need a voucher code, just the reservation, but she refused to call him. So, I requested a refund and cancellation. Andrea told me she could cancel my reservation but not issue a refund because she could not see the charge. So, based on how Victor, Andrea, and AVIS handled me, I will no longer rent from AVIS because they're insensitive and use biased-base tactics. Victor told me that if I had a billion dollars in the bank, they still wouldn't rent me because I did not pass the credit check. And he's been doing this for 43 years while mingling with his girlfriend at work, and he knew I rented from them before.
Moreover, I asked to speak to Andrea's supervisor, and she put me on hold for a very long time. AVIS is unprofessional, inconsiderate, and policing with biased-based tactics. I can't attend Oklahoma to see my daughter perform for her homecoming.

Although I had a valid contract for another four months, Avis had sent a towing truck to tow away my rental car and returned to them. They never contacted us to report a problem with it or asked us to return it. Took the content of the car as well and hasn't reached out to us or offered to return our personal belongings. Useless customer service as well as no one is willing to explain what had happened. Even four days after the towing order doesn't show up on their system. Going to sue their $#*! off.
I recommend get your car somewhere else or simply walk by foot.

Look for a more decent car rental company.

At St. Louis airport's Avis/Budget rental desk the lines snake thru the lobby & out into the parking lot. Agents show no urgency, are surly. Took 2 hours to get a car that was reserved months ago.

I went to Avis to get a Car Rental through Uber of course I have to have a Bank Account get the vehicle it's going on 2 months this company charged me Double I have sent them my personal Bank Accounts information get this problem resolved now two of My Bank Accounts are Negative due to their mistakes I'm very disappointed in this company I will not ever get another vehicle through this company again. Please fix your mistakes!

Our own vehicle broke down in Burley ID on 5 Oct 2023. We were finally able to contact Avis to arrange for a rental vehicle to get back home to Edmonton Canada. We were told we had to make our way to Great Falls MO as that was the closest office that had a vehicle that could go over the border. We had to pay over $1500 Cdn. We are both military veterans so that was an unexpected cost. We made our way to Great Falls on the morning of 8 Oct 2023 where the girl at the front desk said - no vehicle. We had 3 emails from Avis confirming rental between 6-8 Oct. Asked her for head office number and said she didn't have it and walked to the back office where she stayed. I finally found head office number and the fellow on the line was not helpful and said we will have to cancel your rental. Refund will take 7-10 days. So now my husband (PTSD vet) and his service dog and I are sitting under a tree with our suitcases. The topper to this when we get our refund - it is not a full refund, short about $75 Cdn short.
The unprofessional attitude will mean that I never look to Avis for a rental again. I will make sure our community knows what kind of service they can expect.

If I could give this rental car company a negative star I would. Worst experience ever. Don't bother renting a car from Avis/Budget. They will price gouge you like there's no tomorrow. My flight was canceled and I tried to drive back in time and returned the car that same day but only a handful of hours late. They ended up charging me an extra $377. Never again, Avis/Budget.

I want to start by saying that this has been the absolute WORST experience I have had with a car rental company in 40 years of traveling and renting cars extensively for both business and leisure. I have been an Avis customer for over 20 years, I am no longer an Avis customer.

1. The vehicle we rented from the Key West Airport location on August 19,2023 was in poor mechanical condition. The car would not start on the morning of August 24,2023.
2. We called Avis for assistance and received nothing but the run around and NO help. We were told to wait with the vehicle for and hour or more waiting for roadside service. It was 95+ degrees outside so this was a completely asinine and ignorant statement. We made multiple calls and spent over an hour on the phone trying to get assistance.
3. We were unable to talk with the local Avis rental center which was only two miles from where we were stranded.
4. Avis refused to provide a replacement rental vehicle to us, leaving us without transportation.
5. We advised Avis that we would not stay with the vehicle but we would walk back to our hotel and they could pick up the keys to the vehicle from the hotel.
6. The tow driver showed up at our hotel a couple of hours later and picked up the keys from us and we gave him the precise location of the vehicle.
7. The fact that Avis chose to tow the disabled vehicle 170 miles to Miami instead of towing it back to the Key West Airport location only two miles away is an Avis decision and we will not be held liable for such poor decision making.
8. Attempting to charge us for tolls incurred during the towing of the vehicle is again an Avis decision and we are not responsible.
9. Adding one way fees to our bill is again another attempt to defraud us out of money as it was Avis that decided to tow the vehicle to Miami instead of returning to Key West Airport.
10. We did not drive the vehicle 54 miles, we drove a total of at most 10 miles as we never left the island of Key West, which is only 2 miles by 4 miles and we only drove to 5 places on the island over the course of the 4 and ½ days the car actually ran before dying.
11. As the vehicle was unable to be driven by us due to mechanical failure we had no opportunity to put fuel in the vehicle, we will not be held liable for fuel charge.
12. I have no idea where Avis came up with charging us an additional day as we did not have use of the vehicle for two of the days we had actually rented the vehicle.
All I see here is an attempt to fraudulently charge us for very stupid decisions made by Avis.

Let me star that would not recommend this company. I would not even give them one star. My Family had a horrible experience with Avis. Avis road assistant reps and managers were very unprofessional and extremely rude. We reserved a van at the Miami Airport the 1st van given to us had HUGE NAIL in of the tires. We went back again to get a new one and in our way to Orlando on MM 187 we had a flat tire thank God tire didn't blew up and after waiting for almost 4 hrs for tech to come and change the tire, the van didn't have an spare tire and the tire was not good because had a huge open on the size that was no able to hold air. We had 2 elderly people, 3 kids in the middle of the woods and they were no able to help us out and walk to the nearest gas station that was 5 miles at 1am in the morning. They were telling us to walk on the middle of the turnpike because they were not able to send someone to help us out. And if it wasn't because of the STATE TROOPER that were able to take my family to the nearest station at 3am in the morning and put us safe in a place where we had a restroom and be safe while we wait for the morning. Next they we tried to order som e ubers and guess what there were no ubers that work in that area. Finally, one of our family member had to come from Miami to p/up us. AVIS REPS & MANAGERS were rude and unhelpful. I even spoke with the manager and he. Was extremely rude and unhelpful. NEVER use this company. Everyone I encountered was unprofessional and super unhelpful. Rent elsewhere which is what we ended up doing with a much better outcome. Im happy this awful company is not getting my money. Would give a zero if I could. Horrible costumer service, manager is extremely rude and unprofessional. Very unpleasant experience Would personally never never use them again and would recommend everyone else do the same.By the way we are getting suing them for negligent and if we need to wait for time we are willing to wait but they are getting a taste of bad service and unhelpful.

The high-end car I rented wouldn't start one morning. The service tech I called using the number on the Avis key fob said it was clear from the scratches that the vehicle had been jump-started before i. E. Avis never changed the defective battery. Then despite insurance purchased from Avis, Avis tried to bill me for the road-side service. I replied that I wasted 3 hours in swapping out their vehicle for one that worked and to expect my bill of $1500 ($500/hour). Only then did they slink away, thinking that I'm a lawyer (actually, I'm not). Awful company, never rent from Avis.

I reserved a car (economy) online to pick up at@ San Francisco Airport last week. Senior citizen with my AARP card. Original total was $317, had my own insurance and would fill up the tank before returning. The service agent says my original car was not available but I can get another at same price. Give him my info. Get my bill 2 days later...$702!. The old bait and switch with fees of over $400. Told me too bad since I ASKED for upgrade. Stay away from them. Bunch of crooks

Rented a car in the USA twice. Paid with a debit card.
They took a deposit totaling about $500.
I have been writing letters for 4 months asking for a return.
Firstly, the amounts are offered less and in order to dispute it is necessary to provide a million documents that the bank must give. And the bank asks for documents from Avis.
As a result, I only deal with the transfer between them.

I agree already for an amount less, but they have not been able to return it for a month now.

Reserved the car at YVR, Vancouver Airport on Dec, 2021. Call to confirm for winter tire before arrive. When I arrived the guy said he don't have winter tire, it first serve and he also asked me to checked at other company.
At the end, he could get me the car with winter tire but I have to pay double the price what I already pay. Ripe me off last minute. I try to made my vocation nicely but this as... try to make money on a Christmas time.

"I can't do anything." "That's not possible." "You can't do that." "Sorry, I can't help you." "You'll have to call Avis Customer Service. We can't do anything." Those fictions are all you'll hear from Avis, and you'll hear them over and over.

We heard them, repeatedly, in the Bellevue, WA office from which we rented. I heard them repeatedly in my six calls to customer service, who, according to the Bellevue office, would fix the problem the Bellevue office caused. Other commenters online have said the same: No one at Avis tells the truth, no one is competent, and everyone sends you to the Customer Service line, who say and do whatever it takes to take your money and get you off the phone. If you want to rent from liars and incompetents, Avis is your company. If you want decent customer service and decent treatment, go somewhere else.

Tried different ones, always the best experience with Avis. Fair pricing, different options including automatic transmission. Have never waited for longer than 15 mins even in airports

The location is horribly understaffed causing unacceptable waits to get a rental. Given this experience I will never rent from this poorly run company again. I feel sorry for the poor attendants who have to deal with irate customers who have been waiting on line for at least an hour.

Can't believe an employee is allowed to behave the way she did and even in front of the manager! Racial profiling in our case! Definitely don't rent in St. Louis! Took 1 hour to get problem solved and car! Will never use Avis again! Will go back to Hertz!
