“WORKAWAY CUSTOMER SERVICE is very unprofessional, and inadequate.”

As a struggling hostel host accepting travelers for work/trade 25 flexible hours/week, accommodations, all utilities, WiFi, laundry, food, and premium television. However, Workaway DEMANDS wages also. Workaway will not give the Traveler a choice by listing the option without wages, as all other traveling work/trade sites do. This is untenable for both hosts and workers who mutually agree on the terms. We are hosts on several other sites, Helpstay HelpX, Worldpackers, HippoHelp, etc. Most of our workers will come from all the other sites that do not dictate a payment on top of the room, board, WiFi, premium channels, utilities, laundry, and a free shuttle service to stores and activities, is far more than minimum wage at higher scale b&b in a low-income territory where locals mostly have a no interest in getting jobs. Is there no one in whatever mythical Administration Department Workaway may have, with any customer service abilities? No responses for months and NO Phone Number, No way to get answers when needed, and not one person capable of a minute amount of logic to evaluate this ridiculous policy that takes away choices from those involved. If you are a traveler and you wanted to stay at a place in a certain area wouldn't you want to know all the available options on your adventure? Should Workaway make that decision for you, especially when they charge you for the services your seeking? Don't you want to know all your options to make your own decision about where you would like to stay, and how You want to vacation? You are the one paying them, you are the customer and you deserve better. However, that is exactly what Workaway does because they refuse to list viable locations that are available if small businesses, b&b's, hostels, guest homes, cannot pay more than all amenities they are able to give. Most Hosts list because they are not able to pay for labor, so it is a trade for work; otherwise, it would just be a job, right? And why wouldn't the hosts just pay the labor and not offer accommodations, if they could pay? It would be much more cost-effective. It is one or the other: have a nice place to live for 5 hours of work a day (usually less), or work and get paid minimum wage. But, not both. The problem is they have decided to make the choice for parties involved instead of being the conduit for happy traveling. From Josh after waiting months for a response: "... as mentioned several times in previous messages, as a business you need to be able to offer free accommodation and a wage to all workawayers. If you are unable to offer a wage to all workawayers who apply, you should simply not accept them to come to your business." MY RESPONSE: The traveler pays for your service, it is not for you to decide if they get paid or not; IT IS THE TRAVELER'S CHOICE, YOUR PAYING CLIENT'S CHOICE, NOT WORKAWAYS. ADVICE: STAY AWAY FROM WORKAWAY, there are other work/trade sites, like those above, that are free, and believe in freedom of choice.

Tip for consumers:
Stay Away. Use another site, Worldpackers is much better, or HelpX, HippoHelp, Hovos etc. There are many alternatives that do not restrict your FREEDOM OF CHOICE, and actually have customer service and a way to be contacted.

Products used:
As Hosts we accept workers from sites that offer work/trade programs. We were listed on Workaway and accepted many travelers who did not require payments.
