NO STARS. A TOTAL SCAM AND RIP OFF. AVOID.
July 11, 2020

I went to our local Kmart, one day. I was looking at window air conditioners. They had a small on on sale for $249.99. I asked a nearby employee when the sale was going to end because I did not have enough to purchase the item and would have to wait for my next pay check. The employee said "No problem. You can take it home today. We have an in house financing plan like Rent A Center and Aarons. It's rent to own. Make 12 monthly payments and it's yours. Or, you can pay it off within 90 days with no interest, same as cash. You just have to make the first payment, today." I said "Thanks, but I have bad credit and won't get approved." The employee stated that they did not do credit checks and everyone was approved. So, I said how do I sign up. The employee said to up to the registers with him. He arranged for someone to haul the air conditioner up to the register. The employee ask for my drivers license and entered my information into the register's computer. Then he asked for my social security number and entered that. Then he wanted to know the name and address and phone number of my employer and entered that. Then, the guy told me my first monthly payment was $45.26 and that he needed to put it on a credit card. I paid it with my debit card. The guy told me that the next monthly payment of $45.26 would be deducted from my account, one month from the day and that I would get the lease to pwn agreement in the mail in a few days. I said great thanks. Then I left with the air conditioner. Problems started right away. Two days later, when I tried to install the air conditioner, it did not work right. Supposedly it had a warranty. I put it back in the box, got a friend to help carry it to my car, and hauled it back to Kmart to return it and get my money back or get a different one. When I got there, I was told that the store was going out of business and they had an all sales final policy. No refunds or exchanges. I explained that I was not going to pay full price for an item that did not work and that they did not tell me all sales were final when I got it. They told me to call the finance company whynotleaseit.com and gave me a phone number. I called them. All I got was a recorded message that took me to a customer survey. I could not get to talk to anyone. I tried several times but got the same message each time. A week and a half later, whynotleaseit took an additional $45.26 out of my bank account. 2 weeks too early. That left me short of money to pay my electricity bill. I called to complain. I got the same survey. So, I went back to the Kmart store. Eventually, I got to talk to a manager. The manager still would not take the air conditioner back, but he looked up a different phone number for whynotleaseit. I called when I got home. I got a customer service rep who said he would have a supervisor call me back. After a couple of days, no one called me back, so I called again. I got the same line. Someone will call you back. No one called. I kept calling with no results. A week and a half later, another $45.26 was taken out of my bank account. I went back to the Kmart store. They still refused to take the air conditioner back, but a sales clerk was able to locate a different phone number for whynotleaseit and called them for me. She got someone on the phone and then got transferred to a supervisor and handed me the phone. According to the guy on the phone, I had got 2 air conditioners not 1. They were billing me every two weeks instead of once a month. I tried to get him to correct the error, but he insisted that I had got 2 air conditioners. According to him, I had signed up for a lease agreement and there was no way for me to purchase anything because purchase options were not offered in my state. According to him, they were going to take $45.26 out of my bank account every two weeks forever, unless I returned both air conditioners and paid a termination fee of $500 for each air conditioner. I explained that I only got one air conditioner but he laughed, said "Too bad for you, sucker" and hung up. I explained what happened to the sales clerk. She called a manager. The manager apologized but said there was nothing he could do because he worked for a temporary staffing agency that staffed the store because it was closing. He suggested I call Kmart corporate. I googled the number and called when I got home. I got put on hold and told someone would call me back. Nobody returned my call. The next day, another $45.26 was taken out of my bank account. In less than 60 days, whynotleaseit took $181.64 out of my account for a $249.99 item. I kept calling, but could not get the matter resolved. Another payment of $45.26 was deducted from my bank, three days after. I called my bank and asked the bank manager what I should do. She said she could help by putting a stop on the payments by closing my bank account, issuing me a new account and new debit card. I said okay. The day after that happened, I got a phone call from a company called Tempoe. Apparently they are a sister company or collections agency for whynotleaseit. I was told that whynotleaseit tried to deduct a payment of $90.52 from my account and that I had to pay $110.52 via a credit card to bring my account current! I asked to speak to a supervisor. I was told the guy was a supervisor. I explained what had happened and explained that I wanted to return the air conditioner and terminate the agreement. The guy said I could not terminate the agreement until I had leased the items for five months. He still insisted that I had got two air conditioners. He said that whynotleaseit could press charges for theft of rental property and throw me in jail if I did not pay right then. I explained that I did not have $110.32 and would not have it until my next paycheck. The guy said that if I waited a week, I would have to pay $250.32, plus the next payment of $45.26. I explained that my check was not going to be that much money and that I had already paid nearly the entire retail price of the item and would be willing to pay the rest of the original $249.99 and that was it and since it was within the first 90 days, I should owe nothing else. The guy hung up on me. Ten minutes later, I got another call from the Tempoe Collections Department. The caller hung up when I said hello. 18 hang up calls occurred from Tempoe that day. The next day, I got a call at 4 AM from the same number. They kept calling my number and hanging up. I called them to try to get a supervisor or someone who could resolve the issue, but I could not get anything resolved. I ended up changing my phone number. Then, they started calling my boss looking for me. I can't get personal calls at work. My boss informed them of that and so did I. I told them to stop calling me and to send me paperwork in the mail. So far, I have received no paperwork from them in the mail. The phone calls continued. A secretary at the company gave them my phone number and now they call me at home and on my cell a lot. A collections account in the amount of $5707. 04 has showed up on all 3 of my credit reports from Tempoe/Whynotleaseit! That dropped my credit score by 89 points!

Excellent Program for people with low income.
December 9, 2019

I don't understand how people feel this is a ripoff. If you clearly read the contract and even ask questions BEFORE you make the agreement, then there is no confusion.

This is the only company I've run into that lets you control your interest, with 4 buyout options. It's clearly a lease, which means you DON'T own it. They however allow you to purchase it for an additional price. The contract clearly shows the total price and percentage you pay if purchased within 30,60, or 90 days (5%, 8%, 10% respectively), or the minimum %rate if you wait until after 5 months. Obviously the sooner you pay it off, the less interest you pay. The agreement also clearly states that after 5 months, you have paid the minimum purchase amount, after which you can continue to lease it at the same rate, purchase it for a specific percentage over the base price, or return it. Even better (though I didn't see it in the agreement), if you wait until after the 5 months, you can actually split the purchase into 3 payments. I haven't found a better "credit" plan.

I have successfully paid for over 4 items with this program. For some I was fortunate to have enough funds to purchase within the 90 days, so I only paid up to 10% over the base price. For others I had to wait until after the 5 months and did 3 payments on the purchase price. It's the exact same deal as these phone companies that are now leasing you a phone for 18+ months and then still require a purchase rate of $200 or more. The difference is that Whynotleaseit is designed to pay off in 5 -6 months.

I haven't had any problems with payments or unauthorized transactions or account finishing/closures. They only attempt to take money out on the pre-scheduled pay dates. They will try two to three times that day. If they can't collect on that day, then they send out emails informing me of this. They never again attempt to take payments without contacting me first, and they require a new verbal consent to withdraw money from my account on the next agreed upon date. They have never taken more money than scheduled. They even worked with me when I missed payments. They waived the $20 fee the first two times I was late. I was again late on my third item purchase twice. They allowed me to choose when I would pay the late fees and didn't negatively affect my account.

For me they have been a godsend. They have been very pleasant to work with and very respectful towards me - every agent I have spoken with. Most importantly, they allow me to get things for my children when I can't afford a $500-$700 lump sum purchase. They are far more reasonable than credit companies, and they are way less shady than payday loans.

For everyone claiming a sham, it's called stop being lazy and eager for handouts. NOONE is going to loan you money, give you credit, or allow you to make payments on merchandise that you already have in your possession without charging a fee. The average interest rate for anyone with low credit or any company that's giving risky loans is 27%. All you have to do is thoroughly read the agreement and ask questions before you agree to any terms and you won't have any surprises. You are requesting a favor - not the other way around. You're not obligated to accept any deal you don't agree with or like. So before you go writing bad reviews about a great second-chance program, Read! I knew everything to expect for payments, and after $2400 worth of leases and over a year and a half of doing business with them, they have not once deterred from what was written in the contract.

Tip for consumers:

All you have to do is Read the agreement. Everything is clearly explained and charted for you. It’s not in fine print or after 30 pages of distractive mumbo jumbo. They tell you exact payments, exact interest, exact pay-off date. Regardless of what they specifically call it, this is a form of credit, loan, rent to own, LEASE. Expect rates that fit the category. Otherwise, save up, borrow, do lay-away, or just simply wait until your budget can afford what you are trying to purchase.

Their leasing practices seems like it shouldn't be legal
July 17, 2019

Decided to buy a couple of tools from Sears in April of 2018 and again in July 2018. Just getting into woodworking as a new hobby, leasing the tools seemed like the best idea to me for 2 reasons. I can use the tools for a few months to make sure I like and more importantly need them. Secondly if I don't like them I can return them and all it cost me was a few months of small payments. Now this is the part that I don't get. At the lease end they tell you that you can purchase the tools for whatever the balance you owe is. You can return the tools and you are no longer obligated to anymore payments. Or you can continue your lease payments. The last one is where the problem is. In Sears they said you can continue the lease payments until the tools are paid off and than you're done. I chose to do the last one. Now am willing to take at least part of the blame for this because I didn't pay closer attention to it. Having a couple of health issues that had to be taken care of and some family issues and really didn't pay attention to the payments coming out at all. I recently looked into these payments and realized that I had paid 3 x's the original price for the 1st lead and 2x's the price on the 2nd. I called yesterday to stop the payments and look into why they still take payments after the items are paid for. They went over closing the accounts and than she tells me that the first lease has a $170 purchase option that she can reduce for me being such a loyal customer. I said wait a minute I paid 3x's what the items cost and you expect me to pay more money? She quickly replied that she would take care of both at no cost to me. I responded that was great but how about you giving me a refund on the overpayments I made. How can it possibly be legal for a company to keep charging for items long after they have been paid for and do that until you tell them to stop? They are working on getting me a refund for some of the money I overpaid but I'm not too confident it will happen. After all is said and done I hope they do some sort of class action lawsuit against the company and put them out of business. Sears should also think about telling them to hit the bricks because it's also falls on them that they use a company that if you do some research online has only negative things written about them

No way! Run!
March 18, 2019

So my husband & I went to Sears looking for a washer/dryer set... the sales man said we qualified for a loan! Wanting to help my credit score we decided to go with the loan option... the sales man said 9 easy payments & the set would be paid off... I got home & looked over the paper work as it was handed to us as we left... every thing was done on the little machine that you put your credit card in... my mistake! I saw it said why not least it on my paperwork. So I called them I was assured that it was a lease option with the option to buy so I said I'll buy it... assuming I was buying it I paid the 9 easy payments when they took the 10th payment I was confused & called them. They said I had not said I wanted to buy it & I needed an online account... they set it up... I saw it had me leasing it forever! Years & years... I called them back & for the third time told them I wanted the buy out option! This time they tell me I owe the same price as I paid for it a few dollars shy... I said fine not seeing an other option as I needed my washer & dryer... I set up an easy payment plan of 6 easy payments... they took a payment each payday... so a set that cost 999.99 on sale! Now cost that twice! Ok I realized I'd been had. So paid the money got my congratulations email you are the new owner of a washer dryer set... 7/31/18
So fast foreward to January 2019... I get charged a payment of 79.99 out of my bank account... I call why not lease it & i am told they did not charge my account. My account has been paid off & there is no way they charged my account... but yes they did... so my bank put a stop payment. Issued me a new card. Put a fraud investigation in place. Found out they had fraudulently charged me. Refunded my money... now on March 15th I get an other email saying thank you for your payments you are now the proud owner of your merchandise... so I call why not lease it I ask them why I am getting this email & he says I dont know you never paid off your account so I need your credit card number as the bank has blocked our payments... I am on the phone an hour with him closing my account & explaining why I dont owe them money. Giving them reference numbers to my pay off. Finally he says ok it's taken care of you no longer owe the 29.99 a month... hhhmmm that wasnt even what my payment was! So they just pulled a random amount out of their butt to begin charging my card again... months after it has been closed.
So dont believe the guy who says in his review we all go into this with our eyes wide open & they arent fraudulent... they are probably paying him out the money they are stealing out of our accounts... I am pleased to know the salesman that lied me into this mess lost his job when the store closed this year!

You can manage your account at www.whynotleaseit.com by setting up a Customer Service Center account by clicking on login.

This email was sent to me so I called and while explaining about the email and that I wanted to pay off for new buy out amount of 156.19, Claudia verified they sent the email then notified me that my buyout was 250.40 and hung up on me while I was talking and I was transferred to the survey. I called back and spoke with Jimmy and got the same thing transferred to survey. So I called again and got Jose on the phone he told me the same thing so i asked for a supervisor. The supervisor got on the phone (Jesus' # *******) and then transferred to the survey. Now he did call me back and told me the same thing 250.40 to pay off. I do understand that this is a lease that can be paid off at any time. So I ask for a supervisor and thought that is what I was getting and what I actually got was a senior rep. After listening to Jesus' # 1******* and he sounded like a broken record i told him I wanted to speak with someone else that would take my payment. Thats when I found out that Jesus' was a senior rep because thats when I got a supervisor on the phone. (Manny) and he proceeded to sound just like the rest. If I had not installed this microwave already (over the stove) I would have returned it. All I can say is that I would not believe any emails they send you that offer a lower pay off than what the contract says. So now I am on hold to pay the 250.40 so they don't get anymore of my money for this contract. You don't treat customers like this, you don't hang up on them and you honor notifications that your company sends. And to make this up for the inconvenience they gave me a new approval code for up to $2100. They don't offer 1 1/2 stars for rating. I would say stay away but in the end they are actually cheaper than AArons. If you need to use them just believe whats on the contract that you sign. You do sign saying you will pay for 5 months but you always can pay out early.
