“Destroyed my site, 5yrs work gone”

Thomas M.
12/5/23

I spent 5 years building out a nice site on Weebly. An app glitch happened and I contacted their tech support. I was told to uninstall and reinstall the app. When I did this, it immediately deleted every piece of data created with the app on my site, basically gutting the site. Luckily I saw this and did not save the update. Further communication with both Weebly and Square tech support produced no useful result. My site is now frozen in time, because if I save what's in the site editor, I burn down my site. There is NO backup or archive of the current or previous versions of the site, and changes cannot be rolled back. So their tech support recommends solutions that burn down your site and they take no responsibility, they have apps on the site that will delete any content created with them over time, there is NO mechanism for backup, archive or rollback, and finally they will make NO effort to assist a user other than providing scripted answers that don't provide a solution. Buyer Beware!

I've been using Weebly for 7 years and I certainly regret it.

I have hundreds of pages to transfer to a different system so I just put up with Weebly, but for anyone starting out don't even think about it. Run any Weebly website through an SEO checker and then you'll see red everywhere, then there are hundreds of duplicate pages because of the way they create category URLs for the blog. Google hates these duplicates. Page loads are also slow in general because there is no image optimiser.

And the image picked up from a blog post when posting to social media is often something from the overall page template and not the one that you have attached to your post.

These little issues go on and on for years and are never resolved. Just check their forum for all the comments asking why things have not been fixed for years...

If you are working with other products such as landing page builders or email systems it is extremely rare to find integration with Weebly. That means you are often stuck with having to pay Zapier for example to integrate data flows.

It's a total mess, but try to get help from "Support" and you will eventually give up in frustration. Mostly they don't answer. When they do it's worse. So better not to become frustrated and just put up with what you have built until you can muster the energy to transfer to a different system.

Tip for consumers:
Don't get started, use something else from the start.

Unfortunately, I've been with Weebly for 7 years-- yes, there were frequent glitches, but they had support back then to help fix things. Now, I have two websites-- one of which is an e-commerce store and I am absolutely terrified because of the time spent on this recent launch and there's really no one to help. There's been a nice person named Paul I've been able to email with-- but it's days and days before I hear back and there are money sensitive, HUGE problems like people not being able to login to their accounts. It's been two days of this randomly happening and no one responding. Seeing these reviews have me terrified about my Domain now because I'm probably going to have to go back to Shopify. Worth the added expense when you have the comfort someone will be there to help in a timely manner. I feel like once Square acquired Weebly, they abandoned anyone still using this interface vs. their Square option.

It has problems often. As far as they are small and you can deal with them, it is just a litle slow and uncomfortable. But if you have a serious issue, there is no way to contact them. You send mails (the only contact way they have) and no one responds... so you can have your website or your payment system crashed for weeks.

Weebly is an average website builder. However, it lacks in features. You can signup at Weebly and use the builder on their hosting servers or you can signup with BlueHost and use theirs.

If you signup to use the Weebly website builder with BlueHost, you will be using an outdated Weebly version since the updated Weebly builder won't be pushed out to them for some time. So that means new features that are live on weebly.com won't be available on third-party platforms. The only pro to using Weebly on BlueHost is that you will have more control of the back-end server configuration.

Creating a website through weebly.com would be a better choice if you're looking for the new live features and don't want to mess with anything on the back-end. Weebly takes care of everything on the back-end (e.g. Server issues). All you have to worry about is the front-end, building your website and publishing it. It's simple. Weebly is for average people who have no coding experience and just want to build a quick website.

Weebly in general lacks major features and they also prevent basic visual features from displaying on your website. For example, if you have a video background, the video only plays on the desktop version of your site. The mobile version, the video background is static [it does not play]. Weebly prevents video backgrounds from playing audio as well. Another disadvantage with Weebly is parallax images, they only work on the desktop version, the mobile version they are static.

Using Weebly for eCommerce is not great. Trying to run an online store via Weebly with lacking eCommerce features would not be beneficial for your business. There is no flexibility with customizations using Weebly for eCommerce.

Weebly support is lacking. The support is through their forum community and there is only 2-3 Weebly staff that ever answer or reply to your questions. Some community members will also help you out.

Weebly's pricing plans are expensive for their lack in features both on the front-end website builder and at server level. Basic HTTP security headers are missing at server level, they don't use an email server so you have to pay for a third-party email service to use, you can't control your Content Security Policy (CSR), their plugins/add-ons are terrible, and trouble shooting console problems that appear in your browser are impossible.

Tip for consumers:
If you are looking for an easy way to build a website fast, SquareSpace is a better option. It's the same concept as Weebly but a level above in quality and service.

I am beyond frustrated with my Weebly service this year. It used to be much better. I don't know if they need to upgrade their servers or what, but every time I try to make a simple change to our company website, it just sits and spins. That's about what I am ready to tell Weebly to do.

Its ease of use has made me give it 2. The blogs are the worst. The characters are starting from the side and not at all satisfied with the information of views. There were about 100 views but it is consistently showing 1 view.

Weebly customer service was a dog chasing it's tail. The never answered my question directly and when I cancelled both my subscribsions they are still charging me. I have a 12 websites, only weebly sends me fraudulent bills. Their live chat is a live waste of time.

Tip for consumers:
When you complain get to the point, make them accept their error and do not get additional services from to pacify their error.

I have been using weebly for my business for about a year now and i have to say weebly sucks. The phone app is HORRIBLE, you constantly run the risk of ruining your website just by making edits on the app. The customer service is horrible, they have no idea how to deal with technical issues, and weebly always has technical issues. I wish I would of looked someplace else before starting things with this company, they are absolutely lazy and a waste.

Weebky is extremely hard to contact when you have a serious issue regarding them taking out your money.
I contacted them sevral times to stop taking out money on a bad date. They never responded. Leaving me over drawn at the bank at a bad time. I sent them a record FOUR EMAILS!
My bank instructed me to get a new card so they would stop taking the money out and guess what this month they are still trying to take money out lol now they are sending threating emails about how my account is "suspended" yet they NEVER RESPONDED TO THE EMAILS I SENT! They want to send you dozens of email begging for your money but they dont want to respond. I hope other people experince much worse so more accountability will be taken on weeblys part. They are lazy and unprofessional

It almost tells you nothing about how it works, like how to change the destination of buttons, it limits you to where you can place pictures, there isnt even an undo button (had to rewrite an entire paragraph because of this) and sometimes it deletes text. Although if done right your website can look professinal.

When I originally signed up to weebly 5 years ago I felt it was a good investment I could afford. As they have grown their customer base they have reduced the number of functions I paid for. Now I have to upgrade to regain the functions. Recently they downgraded my website because an automatic payment had failed. No warning was sent. Customer service glibly says there are other websites out there if I want to shop around. That did not feel an appropriate response to a loyal customer.
Not recommending them and thinking I may have to pull out and build me a new site.
What a drag.

Have been a Weebly customer for years and today tried to do some editing from my IPad. In trying to delete one image, a whole page of images was deleted in a flash. There is no undo, no are you sure you want to delete 50 images, no warning at all - just gone in a flash. After waiting for 30 minutes on hold I did speak with technical support to find out there is no recovery possible. She did recommend that editing should ONLY be done on a desktop computer. Why you might ask do they advertise this app for editing?

Weebly has gone way down hill. Services that used to be free are no longer even affordable, and the site charges about four times the going rate to secure a domain name. ($40 when the industry standard is about $10 per year). Their support workers are useless -- very unhelpful and changes are regularly made without notice, resulting in loss of business for small owners like me. I am not impressed and hope to switch to a different service.

I recently recommended that a friend pay for Weebly and I would set up his site. I have spent so much time investigating to find that basic functionality such as creating buttons with a uniform size and adding text above the menu is not possible without purchasing apps or rewriting the Theme CSS. Even the support reps that I have spoken to were surprised to find that basic functionality is not available. I have just recreated the Home page for the site three times because the content just disappeared or the background image spontaneously expanded. I have also found that I can change the color of some text in a single text box, but when I add new text it will not allow me to change the color. Weebly also freezes and crashes more than I remember in the past. I will work to finish this site but will not recommend it in the future.

Here are a few things I hate (not dislike) about Weebly:
1. Slow loading time.
I just make a writing blog, nothing fancy, but it takes ages to get to the editor section.
2. Safari-unfriendly
Forget about loading. You will never get to editor mode using Safari.
3. The company changes features as they please.
4. Lack of support for features that should have existed a decade ago.
There's no option to post images side by side, as confirmed by a Weebly product manager. This is unbelievable. It's a nuisance even for someone with less than 10 photos per post. I can't imagine how those with a photography blog would manage.
I've only used Weebly for less than 1 week and it's an awful experience. I normally don't write reviews online and if I do, it's because I absolutely love or loathe it.

I can't believe that Weebly got so many positive reviews online. That only goes to show how unreliable online reviews are.

Weebly advertises itself as the easiest website platform to use, but is it really easy when you spend a whole day formatting a post and still unhappy with what you achieve?

There's a reason why Wordpress is still the leader in website building. It is certainly not easy to use, but it's more transparent and straightforward if you really put in the effort. With Weebly, not so much. You're asking for frustration.

Great experience launching a site, paying for said site With the domain. Was going to try and follow a dream to have a site for a business. That business didn't work out. I quit with the dream. Stopped using weebly. Opted for No renewal. Same thing through paypal. A year goes by and Bam. 300$ deducted from my PayPal Credit account. Not banking through paypal. Ouch. I called weebly and discussed the issue. Instant refund Back to my PayPal Credit. I thought all was fixed until I had 2 Emails from my Bank. Overdraft fees. Why? Because weebly decided to go through PayPal to My bank account attached to PayPal instead to fund the NON EXISTENT website again! Without authorization. I paid the overdraft fees and contacted bank. They said contact paypal and weebly. Called weebly. They said they tried charging me 300$ again, because the Domain wasn't canceled.its a Separate fee from your actual purchase of a website. Bs. They were told to cancel the account domain/website last week. Soo. It cost me an extra 60$ so far because of them. And blamed me for it. Never again. This dream was a nightmare in the end. Buyer beware!

Weebly is very limited as what they can do. If you are starting an ecommerce business its best to just pay the money for a professional web builder. Weebly is behind in so many aspects and if your business goes well you can easily outgrow weebly. They recently added member sign. However once a member signs in none of there account info is saved. You actually have no gain and customer has no gain what so ever by creating an account with your website through weebly. What a waste. Way to go weebly. I am not even going to wait for my contract with them to end. I am paying the money for a professional website. If your a small store and don't require a lot options and don't mind a cheasy site, than weebly is definitely for you. I do want to mention that if you need customer support you can forget talking to a live rep, they only have live chat. Which takes even longer to fix your solution.

I started one free site on weebly a couple of years ago and it has been running ever since so that is the good news. I tried to start another site recently and their site builder seems clunky and hard to use. I am still looking for a hosting company which can give you a clean, well-organized, and straight-forward website builder, but that seems pretty rare.
Wordpress seems to be the most widely used and well regarded software for making and maintaining a site, but the learning curve is steep and I am a bit of a dolt. Weebly has a lot of options for a free site, but it's drag and drop builder does not really let you do much.

It did not want to accept any photos because I run a linux os and I am assuming my photos, even though they are from smart phones, do not conform to the weebly software.
I do not recall having that problem before, (when I setup the previous site). Also it is impossible to resize anything on a new page, and their text editor only gives you very basic options. If you are putting some "brochure-ware" up on their free site, it is probably adequate, but do not expect much.
I do not know how easy it is to do e-commerce or to move or upgrade your website, but it feels difficult to do the simplest things, and I do not think it has to be that way. But I am not very adept at any of these things so it may work for you. I am just not very impressed with their website builder.

Tip for consumers:
Seems reliable if you can get past it's basic clunkiness.

My main gripe is no contact. How can you have a fluent working relationship with a web host etc that does not answer your queries in a timely manner.

There is a drop box for instant conversation on the support page but there is never anyone available to answer to your queries.

I got using their site to make a website. I tried to buy a domain name from them, but couldnt proceed for some reason, tried to contact them to assist with this there was no answer, so i went somewhere else, for hosting etc

Only to find out that i would have to contact weebly again for them to do some 'pointing' from the website i created etc, then deduced that it would be better if i hosted with weebly, so cancelled the other hosting agreement, now trying to contact weebly for four days to find out how to proceed. Ive tried everything. I have not recieved one response, other than the automated one, to my queries.

I like the free bits on the site, but can i trust them with taking me to another level when they are not readily available.

What happens when my site becomes established, is this the way i wold be treated, if my site breaks down and i need to contact someone, when would they respond.
