Unacceptable Business Practices and Horrendous Customer Service
June 14, 2022

Avoid this site at all costs. They have horrible customer service, no desire to help, and an unethical return policy. On May 16th, I purchased a virtual textbook along with a wSAM code from Vista Higher Learning for $200.26. On May 17th I realized that the book would no longer be needed due to a change in my course schedule. I emailed the company that same day explaining my situation and requested a refund since I would now need to purchase the correct book. The customer service representative responded with the following: " it will be necessary for you to purchase the right item you need and send back in this email the order number for the right item and the order number for the wrong one. In that way, we will be able to escalate your case and reimburse you for the package you won't use." Rather than issuing a refund or even store credit, they wanted me to spend another $200, without any real guarantee of reimbursement. However, this would not work in my case anyway, as the new book I needed was not from VHL. I explained this to them and then was told that purchases that only contain digital access are not eligible for returns. I reached out again on May 31st and explained my situation again hoping for better assistance, but on June 1st, I was told the same thing. Considering that VHL claims to accept refunds on physical textbooks, there should be no reason that virtual textbooks cannot be refunded. This policy that VHL has in place is obviously meant to scam and take advantage of unsuspecting students. It is absurd and unacceptable to implement such a policy; a policy of this nature is a horrible business practice, immoral, and thievery. Unable to reach an adequate solution, I responded to their email on June 1st to express my disturbance with the company's business ethics and asked to be directed to a supervisor. On June 3rd I received a response that ignored my request to speak to a supervisor and was only told the same thing about their no refund policy. On June 3rd I once again requested to speak to upper management. My email was ignored, so I reached out again on June 7th asking to do their makeshift exchange as it was mentioned before. I got an email back that same day and was offered a "swap". I was looking at a package that was a different price, so I knew a "swap" would not go smoothly and only cause more stress. It is at this point (June 8th) that I once again asked to speak to upper management, as I was no longer willing to do any sort of swap when I don't need any of their overpriced books. I could not see why I had to try and accommodate their absurd policy/pre-calculated scam. On June 9th, after asking a total of three times, a supervisor finally reached out to me. He stated that "you can contact the same day to cancel the order and the money will be refunded, otherwise if the order is completed, we are unable to make any refunds for access codes." He went on to say that they could not accept my refund request even as a one-time exception. As I mentioned before, this policy is just meant to lock customers in a create a reason for why they "can't" give you your money back. Additionally, if you can cancel on the same day, there should be no reason why you can't cancel within 30 days (like the physical textbooks). After he told me that there were no one-time exceptions, I sent him screenshots from the BBB of other unsatisfied customers who had similar situations to mine, and who did end up getting a refund. He tried to write it off as their classes being different than mine, saying that their schools asked them to buy a different book, and that's why they were given a refund. However, that was definitely not the case. The three screenshots I sent him showed that the students had dropped the class and had no use for the book anymore (just like me). If it were the case that the school asked these customers to buy a different book, VHL would have just offered them an exchange like they initially offered me. And regardless of the reason, they were given refunds as one-time exceptions so there is no reason why they couldn't do the same for me. They have done nothing but steal, lie, gaslight, and make excuses. Their business practices are more than shady and downright immoral. They don't want to give refunds and they even hesitate to give store credit. All they want to do are these shady swaps and exchanges that require you to buy a new book before they even think about reimbursing you. Or, they try to do a swap because they think they are going to break even and not have to return any money. This is extremely unprofessional; I have never seen any business run this way. They are taking advantage of students who have no choice in the textbooks that they need for school. After calling out the supervisor for lying about not being able to make a one-time exception (on June 9th), I received an email back on June 10th from the original agent that I had been speaking with. She explained that I should expect to hear back from the Customer Service Supervisor team after they do an investigation. That day, I asked who I should be expecting to hear from so I could keep an eye out for their email and I never got a response. It is June 14th today, and since I never heard back, I emailed again asking for a status update. I am still waiting to see what their response is, but I would not be surprised if I don't receive one. This has been going on for nearly a month now and has been nothing but stress. They obviously care more about making money than running a business properly. $200 is a lot of money to refuse to refund and is just so immoral. The company should be put out of business and no school should expect their students to purchase materials from here. My advice would be to not even consider buying from here. There are many compliments on Sitejabber and the BBB that prove how dysfunctional and disgusting this company is. I truly hope this company rethinks its immoral policy or gets reprimanded for its unethical practices. As a side note, I think it's important to mention that I filed a complaint with the BBB on June 8th and never got any sort of response regarding my complaint.

Cheaply made, ineffective, expensive, and a waste of time and money
February 11, 2022

VHL Central is the worst. The most unproductive "teaching" software. It tries traps to you into failing. (Didn't work on me, though.) I've found multiple times where it tests you on concepts that it DOES NOT instruct you upon later, but expects a BEGINNER to somehow follow along or just get so frustrated that you give up. It's cheaply made. It relies heavily on a massive amount of unclear pictures to teach vocab, no English translation to the Spanish examples a lot of times with its "teaching lessons," so a student is confused and lost. It needlessly spends so much time on these stupid Fotonovelas that teach you nothing. If I want to hear Spanish in an everyday setting, or be able to watch how they speak, I'll watch YouTube or listen to Spanish radio or sthing. Its stories in the video format are at least 5 minutes long at a fast pace, with complex structures and tons of vocab. IN a BEGINNER Spanish class! You can rewind them, but there's no option to slow down the speaking! The only help they give you for these awful videos is a transcript of the complex words that you have to use a translator or a dictionary just to get a sense of what they're talking about. In the latter lessons, the English directions for the quizzes on the videos will be taken away and be replaced with full Spanish ones. But most importantly instead of using the opportunity to reinforce the vocab and grammar concepts you're suppose to learning that's FOR THAT LESSON and prepare you for latter lessons, they throw these stupid, often partially irrelevant, unnecessary, forgettable storylines that in reality do not matter. Despite all these odds and all this BS, I got still As in my Spanish classes, and it had everything to do with ITS BETTER COMPETITORS, my hard work and resourcefulness to make sense out of the nonsense that is VHL. I give VHL no credit. I recommend to anyone considering to take a language class for credit to investigate into the books/programs that the school uses, and if it's VHL, steer clear. If you have use to VHL, use it minimally and rely on other FREE, good sources to teach you the concepts and practice. Skip over the Fotonovelas if you can or skim just to get a gist, and when they quiz you, look for the key words in the questions that are also in the Fotonovela clip's transcripts. This is one way of the ways I minimized the distraction, remained productive and effective in my coursework, and didn't allow it to waste my time.
