Meh snacks and bad customer service policies
September 27, 2024

I'm a big fan of snack boxes. I used to really enjoy 'love with food', and twice have treated myself to subscriptions for Universal Yums, which I adore.

I decided to try Urthbox, which now I regret and will not be repeating. First of all, I guess I signed up for a six month subscription, but broke my ankle two months into the subscription after getting caught up in a bidding war on a house and cannot start a new job that I was all lined up to start, but then broke my ankle so I have no income whatsoever and have not even been able to move to the house yet for five months so I'm still paying rent where my rent has been raised twice in the last year and was already more than I could afford to pay but was waiting for some inheritance to come through which took several years longer than expected so I was stuck in a loop until I could finally buy, but because of the triple fractured ankle I was unable to move and have been paying to support 2 households of utilities and pet care at the house I purchased (Because the previous owners who were getting a divorce left me three chickens and a cat) and the utilities are already more at the house where I'm not even living yet! 🙄😳😵‍💫🤯

So needless to say with no income whatsoever I am extremely stressed about money and rightfully so since I'm having to live off credit cards and getting deeply into debt very quickly especially with the medical expenses. 🤦‍

So I contacted Urthbox and requested to cancel my subscription and they said no, which I think is a very poor customer service policy, especially given my circumstances. In another poor review on them, a customer said that on their website they say you can cancel at any time which clearly is not the case. That seems like a straight up lie for them to claim that and then not let me cancel my subscription, which seems almost illegal in this case to state something that is inaccurate for a policy like that. Also, the shipping seems to take a very long time.

On top of it, in my opinion the snacks are very mediocre. Many of the items (about 1/4 of them) I have taken one bite of and ended up putting in my green waste bin and throwing away. And the rest have been edible but mostly for me were nothing to get excited about. I would say maybe only 2 to 3 of the 12 to 15 snacks I have received in each box were something that I would want to eat again. And in yet another disappointment, I've had several unremarkable items that have been repeated in two or even three of my so far 5 boxes, so it seems to be like the diversity of items is lacking. If there was an item that I absolutely loved (which has not been the case), I know I can go online and order it again, but when purchasing a variety box snack subscription I don't expect to have several of the same items repeated two and three times.

Overall, I would not recommend Urthbox and will not be doing it again, or even buying it for other people (I often purchase 3 month gift and snack box subscriptions as gifts for people - so far the very best ones I have tried and given as gifts have been Therabox, Universal Yums, Atlas coffee and tea, and the Ipsy glam bag, for what it's worth!).

I also thought it was very tacky when I reached out and requested the cancellation - to which they said no 🙄 - But after learning this was not an option I also asked for confirmation that my subscription would not be renewed to which they confirmed that would not happen. Due to now reading some other reviews saying theirs was automatically renewed without their permission I will be keeping an Eagle eye out for them to possibly automatically renew my subscription without my permission. Nothing like experiencing paranoia and not trusting a company that you have done business with possibly having shady and unethical business practices, which is unpleasant to say the least. 😳😬

But anyway, what I was saying was that when they did confirm via email that my subscription will not be renewed (after my being forced to have 4 more boxes and not able to cancel my 6 month subscription 😡), they sent an email with the subject line saying "Did you just break up with us?" 🙄🤦‍

I know they were trying to be cute, but I thought it was tacky and awkward. Furthermore in the body of the email it said "we're not worried because we know you'll be back" It's like ummm….yeah…. Don't count on it! And when I read other reviews about their business practices and the mostly blah and unimpressive snacks (at least imo and compared to others I have enjoyed) at this point I am grateful that I didn't sign up for a longer subscription and am also glad that next month will be my last disappointing box with them.

Bye bye Urthbox, I WON'T 'be back'!

(The photo I attached are 3 of the 15 snacks that I've opened so far and probably will not finish. Meh/blah snacks imo)
