When I tried my free session (precalculus
March 14, 2010

When I tried my free session (precalculus - multiplicative inverses of matricies), they did it the way my book wasn't asking for (using determinants - that's the next problem, but my book says not to do this one with determinants) saying 'this way is easier' - regardless of my protests.
Then when the Academic Coordinator got on to convince me to buy, she kept pressing the point that I should buy (repeating statements a few times) regardless of my arguments (e.g. Since I only need help with about 1 or 2 problems a month, it would be 72 times worse of a deal for me, because, assuming 20 minute sessions (which is about right), it would be about 20min/$3 for me (seven times, but that doesn't change the ratio), and *******min/$20 for someone else (*******min is a week), which simplifies to about 7 and 540, and 540/7=72).
After I released my best argument against it (can't remember which now, she didn't give me any time to record the session), she probably realized she didn't have me hooked and redirected me to the 'buy now' page.
I prefer tutor.com, but that might only be because my library pays for it for library patrons (like me!).
They got my question right, but I could have probably gotten the same results from my calculator or an online one - right answer, very little work. The only work given was how they found the determinant (really simple, and I already knew how: 2 multiplications and 1 subtraction for order-2 matricies). I had posted a link to a PDF on my website with the problem and a textbook example and my work and my proof that my answer was wrong. Looking at the access logs, I can see that it was clicked, but judging by the chat, never looked at.
I probably just should have closed once the sales pitch was brought on and saved myself about 20 minutes (but then again, picking holes in sales pitches is fun).

I can see how this MIGHT be good for someone (perhaps), and maybe you're treated differently if you pay for the service, and this is the only thing that saves it from a $#@! Rating. The service would be 72 times cheaper for someone with lots of problems, and that is what might make it better.

If they had a pay-per-question option, I might have bought in. Still, now that I've remembered that tutor.com is free for me, probably not.
Besides, I can just wait until Wednesday and ask the teacher (Wednesday is the only day I go to school, because I homestudy).
