“Great tutors & great service”

Rebecca D.

I have used tutors for both my sons at A & GCSE level and have always found great teachers. The site is user friendly, it allows you to really see what skills and experience teachers have. TutorHunt responds well & efficiently to me as a parent.

“Once a good site”

A member of this site for a few years, and was very happy with it. However, over the last year, I have had zero bookings, despite having several clients in the past with 4/5 star reviews. The high cost of membership combined with their CUT on every lesson has bumped up prices unaffordable for both tutors and students. I would suggest looking eleswhere, indeed I am registering with other sites and pretty much dumped this one.

This site used to be fair, taking a reasonable about of commission for their service.
Now, not only do they not give the option to pay a one-off finders' fee, but the commission on each lesson is extortionate. My own situation is that I charge £30 a lesson and Tutor Hunt charge students and parents another £15 on top of this, so they are now paying £45 for a £30 lesson.
As a GCSE tutor, I work with students on a long term basis, which can really increase their costs. The worst thing is I can't tell parents about the commission and Tutor Hunt make it appear as though I am charging £45.
They have become greedy and exploitative and I would recommed parents, students and tutors to go elsewhere.

Tip for consumers:
Their undisclosed commission

I have been a tutor on this platform since 2012 and got most of my students through them. It used to be very easy, small fee for the students to pay to get my details- that's it. Now it's become ridiculous! Not only they retain a percentage on every hour taught but suddenly I have been struggling to get my profile 'verified' because I have a DBS on the gvt s Update Service and they don't accept it! You heard me, they don't accept my DBS although it is enhanced and automatically updated every year. I work in colleges. It's become a total joke. Disappointed.

So disappointed to write this revew after working a few years for tutor hunt and being very happy. Like practically everyone else I have had hardly any enquiries since they decided to charge 25% for every lesson. I have spoken to them but they were quite adamant that most tutors were in favour of the new system. These reviews tell a completely different story!
I would seroiusly advise them to go back to their original system where students paid £25 for a tutor's contact details. For example if a student was ill or had a shift change they sent me a text whereas if you are ill it is so much more hassle to log on and send an Email.
I hope you have read and are taking note Tutor Hunt as there are so many more sites available now

I have been a tutot on this site for years. I met many clients and agents this way. However, in the past year, this site has been managed in a very different way. They now charge tutors for a premium membership but give nothing in return. I have been a well-liked tutor and have had plenty of 5 star reviews for 20 years but during this past year got 0 clients from this site. They charged for a DBS and, despite paying upfront, they gave nothing in return. I sent a polite complaint letter weeks ago and did not even got an ackowledgemen from this site. On top of all this, they now take a big cut from tutors too, making the prices so much less accessible to clients. Either the clients suffers or the tutor suffers. Either way, this is unfair and it is no longer the high quality site it once was.

Tip for consumers:
If you are tutor, look elsewhere

I have been a tutor on Tutor Hunt for 5 years and gained many leads from them. However, at the end of last year I got a notification of a change to the terms and was told that I would be charged 25% commission for every student gained. It appears that this is unjust as the commission service is only applicable to new tutors who signed up in 2019 onwards. I am now stuck on a high fee and will probably get no leads and have to go elsewhere.
To top it off Tutor Hunt don't bother replying to support emails and they can't even pick up the phone to remedy the situation! Appalling treatment, avoid at all costs!

Firstly I would like to say I am sure this site is legitimate and there are genuine tutors willing to help. However my daughters experience has been far from positive as the tutor which I paid a fee of £23 for has no subject knowledge of what we require (this was not brought to light before we purchased their details). Following a rather unusual phone call the tutor has now sent an abusive email. I fear this is instead of admitting lack of subject knowledge. As a result I would say stay away from this site, however this could be an isolated incident.

Tutor Hunt
I would suggest that for unsuspecting future tutors and especially for the students who express an interest in their services - you make your procedure clearer/ more transparent on your website. In other words that you, Tutor Hunt:
- add commission on each and every lesson (in my case 25%)
- do not allow initial meetings to take place free-of-charge
- expect a series of lessons to be booked in advance before the student/tutor have even met.
I am truly shocked by my experience and have requested that my account be deleted.

I had a very bad experience with TutorHunt.

A student purchased my contact details and we spent three hours discussing the pricing and duration (due to the huge workload and urgency, which I had to cancel my other appointments on the day), then we finally made a decision.

Student did not show up, been waiting for an hour at the agreed time and location. Wanted to demand a small deposit before the meeting but this violates the TutorHunt's terms and condition, so I didn't do it. The student left a very untrue and negative feedback on my profile, which was permitted by TutorHunt. Saying I misled him into buying my contact and tried to scam him for more. This is ridiculous, not only did I make no profit from the student. I even had to cancel my other appointments for him. I lost time and money, as well as my reputation for something that was completely untrue.

Unfortunately, TutorHunt did not look into the case even though I have filed three reports regarding to this matter.

Don't use TutorHunt! Protect yourself and go work for a legit tutorial centre.

As a qualified teacher, I found the site only to be interested in taking money from pupils. I was not allowed to arrange any tutoring until pupils had bought my details but most never did. Instead I was bombarded with questions with them never actually purchasing my details and who can blame them with such an extortionate fee to simply arrange tutoring. I was also spammed with details of pupils in Essex when I live in Kent. Poor service, please avoid.

This company takes your money, you get a tutor who turns up once or can't teach the subject and you are left with no tutor and it has cost you £25 introduction fee. Goodness knows what you are paying for. They ignore all emails and messages, other than sending automated emails but no-one will talk to you. I don't believe there is anyone there at this business, it is an online scam. Find a tutor through word of mouth or locally. Beware, you have been warned.

Not enough charging £30 for student-tutor matching.
They charge 25% from every lesson fee.
Students are not allowed to pay directly to tutors, but must pay to tutorhunt who after charging 25% transfer money to the tutor's bank account.

They also try to cheat you by claiming on their home page: "We do not take any ongoing commission from the tutors like many agencies do, as this invariably leads to the tutor raising their hourly rate, and passing the cost onto the student.".
But in another page they write: 'We charge the student your hourly rate plus commission, which will be between 15% and 25%.'

What kind of joke is that?!

This website was good before, as they just took £20 per matching student-tutor and no other commission. Having gathered clients they started robbing them.

This is an absolute scam, they did not invest a penny, the website user interface have not changed for the last 10 years.

Avoid!

Twice bought details and still no tutor.
Illness, flu, emergency lectures, free but not today, don't turn up... etc
The list goes on. £50 spent and still no help... and LOTS of time messing around.
Very poor site... messages do not appear when posted. Some only the next day... too late!
So save your money and time... go somewhere else. Gumtree local perhaps... you can just call the tutor.

No replies yet for over a month and if I understand well you expect me to pay for details when(if) some of the tutors decides to reply? What am I paying for? Inter-mediation of a incredible long and painful process?

Paid for tutors contact details, they kept saying they were busy, then when I did make an appointment didn't bother showing up. When I emailed asking if they had trouble finding me told me 'they wern't bothering tutoring anymore'

I complained to site didn't get offered my money back and months later the same tutor is still on their site so others can waste their time and money!

I'm tutor on tutor hunt. From my experience with them, I can say that many students who contacted me via TH mailing system did not continue with buying my contact details.
That is, Students don't buy tutors details due to the high buying fees. It would be beneficial for all parties if the fees go down.

I hired Rieman to tutor me in A level Economics and Maths. Rieman does have a good background in maths for GCSE, however when i hired him for A level Maths, he was not reliable in tutoring me. Unfortunately, he would only cover topics once and not be willing to go over the topic again, even if i found a particular concept difficult to understand.

Despite having studied Economics at A level, i can honestly say he is not competent nor capable of tutoring in this subject. His approach of just reading textbooks, and repeating the information was not effective nor helpful. Despite telling him this, he displayed a stubborn attitude and continued with this approach. In regard to actually revising and doing practice papers for the edexcel syllabus, he was not willing to help me write or even structure my essays. Despite prior having told him, that this was my weakest area. His approach of completely relying on mark schemes was not helpful either, i think a student is capable of doing this in their own time.

In terms of professionalism, Rieman was not punctual, often arriving late to sessions on a regular basis. When i had informed him of this issue, he would agree to arrive on time however he continued arriving late to each session. I found that during the sessions, Rieman can be very argumentative and at times has used offensive language towards me. His behavior was not acceptable and i would not recommend employing him as a tutor for your son or daughter.

DO NOT USE THIS SITE AS A STUDENT OR TUTOR!

After tutoring with this website for almost 6 years, they suddenly changed all their terms and conditions without warning and now charge a 25% commission on top of tutors' fees for every lesson that you take through their platform!

This is TERRIBLE for students because it means every time you buy a lesson it'll cost you 25% more than if you just went directly to the tutor. It's TERRIBLE for tutors because it means we have to take a massive loss on our earnings or we're forced to put our prices up and then likely miss out on picking up students. The only people it benefits is Tutor Hunt themselves.

As a long term user of the site, I have 11 five star reviews and have taught so many students through them over the years. I emailed to ask if anything could be done for tutors such as myself who are suddenly being forced to increase their prices drastically to keep up with this change - or to continue tutoring at a massive loss of earnings. They were short with me and didn't offer any help or apology!

I'm beyond disappointed with their service, after the amount of custom I must have brought them over the years. I'm also very upset about the amount of money they now want to take from tutors and students alike. The only thing I can do is complain unfortunately as they refuse to discuss the matter further.

PLEASE AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

This site is horrible!
I've received replies from tutors after few hours. Even if tutor replied to me earlier. The cost of details are expensive. I paid for tutor details £21,60 and there was no contact. I think I will claim my money back...
I will not recommend it is not worth money!

This site is a con as the tutor we contacted not only took our money, failed to provide our child with the required assistance, kept cutting him off when he contacted him and there was no one to turn to for assistance as the provided just rings out. What a waste of time and money and our child has been left out of pocket and very stressed as he failed his course as a result.
