“Excellent Quality Items were Excellent!”

Michelle C.
10/7/23

So I cannot speak as to selling my clothes through this company but when it comes to making a purchase I ordered all excellent items and that is exactly what I received! I needed a couple of Calvin Klein blazers and Ann Taylor work dresses and I made sure to order the excellent quality that says it comes brand new and that's exactly how the material came! Completely true to description. The only thing I will say is I did not read the description for a final sale item so I did not know the material before purchasing, but everything else was perfect! Ordered 6 items and keeping all 6 items! The packaging was also so cute and I ordered everything 8 days ago and it came pretty fast for standard shipping!

“They steal clothing”

Rachel B.
1/7/24

Sent multiple boxes using the shipping labels provided by ThredUp. They "lost" every single box, I had to fight for a very paltry repayment. They facilitate shipping but then claim that you're still responsible for your clothing until they buy it off you which is nonsense. There is no accountability. I wanted all clothing they rejected returned to me and instead they "lost" all of it. Can only imagine how much they steal if you opt to donate anything they "reject". Absolute trash.

I bought three handbags and two are great but one must have been owned by a smoker and reeks of smoke. I never thought of this as a potential problem in buying secondhand clothes online. I bought two dresses -- one is very nice but the other has what looks like ink or grease streaks on it.

Since when did these idiots charge $3.99 for returns for each item? And then offer a credit instead for less to try to bargain with the crap they sent you? I. Am. Soooooooo. Sick. Of being gipped by everybody. I swear online shopping is absolute trash these days; we are officially seeing how easy customers can be swindled by businesses like Thred up. I have even heard people sending their name brand stuff and only giving them a few dollars, but then reselling it for much higher. I am shocked by how greedy and trashy they've become. I wonder who owns this trashy company.

Tip for consumers:
THEY CHARGE A $3.99 RESTOCKING FEE PER ITEM IF YOU WANT TO RETURN THEM. Also, NEVER EVER BUY FINAL SALE ITEMS, because they are not descriptive enough about what the issues are and you just find out upon arrival. Pictures are barely accurate reflection.

First, the measuring and listing they do is way off. Measurements were inaccurate, high waist pants were listed as "super low" etc.
Second. You will only get a few pennies credit for what you send in.
Third, the clothes you buy are REALLY used. "Mistake for new" is more like a "fair" condition.
Overall, not worth the hassle.

What a terrible "Closet Cleanout" experience. In theory, this should be fantastic. It's an incredible way to give thousands of people access to great quality items in your closet that just don't fit your lifestyle anymore. However, the entire process took entirely far too long and the payout was not at all worth the wait.
I'm so disappointed that it took 3+ months for them to even go through my bag. After that, you have to wait until AFTER your product is sold and the return window period is over until you get paid out.
Needless to say, I won't ever be sending them my items again. It took entirely too long. I'd rather just go to my local consignment shop, have a 17 year old go through my things, take my cash and drop off the rest of the items at a local shelter.

I have been ordering from THREDUP for almost a year. I have never needed customer service which I was glad because I had read all of the bad reviews. But sure enough, the day came when an order was lost and thredup was NO HELP despite several emails sent to them. Not one response. And because there is no phone number, I just had to file a complaint with the BBB so order at own risk.

I have been ordering from Thredup for a few years now and I have had some super highs, and some real bad lows when it comes to the quality and accuracy of their products. I had gotten a NWT dress for next to nothing that they had described had a small hole, it didn't it was in perfect shape! I have also gotten items that were listed as "might mistake them for brand new" to have holes in them... like large ones... be wrinkled and smelly to high heaven, and they were on final sale so you can't return them... The sizing is so off as well. I try to stick to brands I know the sizing and look at the material make up, if its 100% cotton you can bet its not true to size. The issue I recently ran into, and a main reason I took a break from Thredup is the sizing of Levi's flannels... its just ALL wrong... like I returned multiple shipments that were completely different than the website stated, and the ones that worked out great were actually mens shirts... but they were listed in the womens section, and for anyone who is a big button up shirt fan you can definitely tell the difference when it comes to mens and womens by the fit and also which side the buttons/snaps sit on (that isn't as big of a deal just kind of silly). With quality and fit inconsistencies, it gets so dang frustrating to shop on Thredup now a days that I look more for good sales on the actual companies' websites and just buy it brand new. Like I said I have had a good share a great finds on Thredup that were for sure worth the purchase, but the amount of disappointment recently has made me stop shopping there as much.

When it comes to selling stuff to Thredup... just no! I sent in a massive bag a few years ago, I mean make the UPS guys eyes widen at the size of this dang bag... a lot of the clothing had tags on it still and I had a brand-new pair shoes in there also, and I got 0.02 for a handful of stuff and the rest was shipped back to me... I was so bummed out! I know a company has to make money so the payout isn't going to be huge, but really... 0.02 cents... I would rather deal with ebay than that nonsense. You can't say its poor quality if the tags are still on the article of clothing... it sat in a drawer forever than was shipped to them... what their idea of poor quality is I have no idea...

I guess my overall thought on Thredup is to just be cautious, zoom in on all the pictures, read the condition of the item closely and realize you may have to pay a re-stocking fee for some crappy clothing. I do not believe they have a crazy strict quality check system as they say... otherwise people wouldn't be getting garbage clothing... I mean really... huge holes and nasty smells are not hard to miss.

Tip for consumers:
Buyer beware!!! Don't sell to these guys unless you feel like donating our clothes over being paid for them.

Ordered from thredUP for the first time. 2 items are good. The 3rd item; Iotdered a black velvet dress, is not velvet but a cotton jersey fabric. As I ordered this for the fabric, it is useless to me. The return options are so narrow that it is not worth returning, as it would cost $8.98 for shipping plus a $1.99 restocking charge. So I can do nothing. I was hoping that this would be a great way to shop for brand name used Items, but am very disappointed in the return policy and no way to contact "real" customer service.

I tried Threadup to sell 4 Kate Spade handbags. I paid 10.99 to have bags returned that couldn't or did not sell. 1 bag was returned because they wouldn't sell it due to stains on the inside. Fair. 2 bags sold, 1 did not. I asked to reclaim the bag only to find out in order to get it back there was a fee and return shipping cost. None of this is disclosed up front. I found the entire experience very difficult to navigate from sending and listing items (took a month to list) to cashing out. I won't use again.

Just wanted to pipe in with my recent experience with the ThredUp subscription box.

Was not a fan of the first box I recieved. I felt items were over priced and also found quality of the items to be lacking.

I cancelled my subscription box from ThredUp before my shipping date, only to find out that they shipped my next box anyway and also refused to refund me shipping cost. Customer service took days and days to respond to me. I am not pleased.

I've had a ThredUp account for years as both buyer and seller. It's pretty good for buying, but lately, I've seen that the fabric and condition descriptions are wrong more often than not. If you're planning to sell, it's just not worth it. For example, a Joules coat I bought new (tag sad $375) sent to ThredUp in brand new condition with the tags has been sold, and I will make a total of $22 if it's not returned. Hale Bob blouses that sell for $128 in new or like new condition are bringing me between $1.86 and $13.98 per blouse. Check out what I made on the Ugg Australia Crossbody (new, pictured below). I would have done better almost anywhere that consignments are sold, even if half the clothing ended up donated. There's a transaction fee for obtaining my money, so I will have given away a couple of those Hale Bob tops for free after that transaction.

I sent in a pretty well rounded bag of items that included Michael kors, Rachel Zoe, Victoria secret, brand new adidas shoes and many more. The payout on most items was 2 dollars or less. I had some items new with tags that never even made listing. HUGELY disappointed and will never use again.

I purchased 4 items from Thredup, all classified as "excellent" condition, described as "like new, no signs of wear." -- a very generous analysis. All of the items had that smell often found in second-hand clothing, where someone has used some overwhelming fragrance/fabric softener, etc. That I could live with, but BOTH Eileen Fisher sweaters had a significant number of pulls, pilling, and general wear that I would classify as "Fair" condition. The Fabletics hoodie was faded in spots and pilled under the arms. I would not purchase from them again.

While they make it easy to ship clothes in the clean out kit and keep you posted on your seller page as to when that kit will be cleaned out, they are absolutely Illuminati-esque when it comes to your "pay out." All a big darn secret... a club most of us will never be a part of, apparently.

I was forced to sell stuff quick, so did. All my luxury items went to the Real Real (way more transparent in their commission structure, btw). TRR gave me so much more for my items, however, they are super high end and what they didn't take went to Thred.
No way to figure out selling one item worth $200 and getting $75 versus selling an $90 item and getting $3.10! It's almost laughable. They continued to email me when my clothes sold..."Congratulations, you made 53 cents... ummmm, for something worth, at least, 40 bucks. I would be on board if they were transparent, but they ARE NOT.

Took my measly $273 and cashed out after giving them thousands of dollars' worth of clothes. Thought I'd spend it up on their website, but alas, their website doesn't allow you to search by size when filtering searches... ummm, why not?

I will never, hopefully, be desperate enough to have to use them again.

I had done a "test" sale with them about a year ago which went quickly and the few items I sent them all sold so I thought this was a great way to do thrifting. I recently lost a LOT of weight and did a massive closet clean out (including some shoes) and sent it off to ThredUp in August 2021. Via their app, I tracked the package which took one full month to even arrive to them in late September via USPS. It is now more than four months later and I finally got an update online saying it should be processed by 1/22/22. Granted it was a LOT of items but by the time they get around to it, my package will have been in progress for five months. I understand being understaffed or if holiday rush is challenging. But this was begun last SUMMER and there is virtually no way to communicate with them. (probably by design since they don't seem to be all that interested in customer fulfillment). Anyway, this will be my last attempt with ThredUp. Once my items sell and my personal points are used, I'll be done with them. They seem to be an organizational nightmare and at this stage I have no choice but to let it all play out. Frustrating...

The timeline of their process if incredibly slow and not well disclosed on the web site

In a time when the economy is high and people are trying to make a bit of money for themselves, I never saw such theft. I sent 3 huge boxes of clothing, purse, shoes, all quality, all cleaned, washed, ironed and well known labels, I only get a few dollars out of it and a fraction of what sent in they took for pennies. What is the purpose of sending in a box or bag? Next time I am going to donate to Goodwill. OH-and the items they rejected, I saw for sale, by them, with no owner, and I know those are my items. They need a better system, don't you think?

It sounds like many people here have had a similar experience as I have with trying to consign with thredUP. I sent them two very nice pairs of shoes - including one pair of Enzo patent pumps that had NEVER BEEN WORN OUTSIDE! They weren't "accepted". Nor were a very gently used pair of Nine West wedges, or a pair of barely worn jeans. These were not very old items - I've seen items for sale on the site that looked much worse. Even though I agreed to give them up, I'm not sure I would have sent them had I known thredUP would not accept them for consignment. So I call BS on their practices - I have a feeling these items are actually kept by employees or sold for their own profit. They get two stars because I did buy a cute sweater from them, and I was happy with that.

The descriptions don't really give the full picture of the clothing. One shirt I got was sized Small - but was huge! Could not have known that. Another shirt - the material was so uncomfortable. Couldn't have known that. The problem is - now - they charge $4 to return items. It cost me $24 to try on clothes! I'm deleting the app. Not buying here again.

I recently sent in my first "clean out" bag to ThreadUp. This is my very first experience with this company.

The "Clean out" bag took weeks to arrive in Georgia; it felt like a really long time. Finally my items were on the site, and on sale. The "pay outs" that are available on the items I sent in were very small, considering I sent in Talbots/Jjill clothing that was almost brand new. It feels to me that I would do a lot better money wise on ebay. The photos that are taken of each item are not great.

As for making purchases on ThreadUp, I have for the most part been very disappointed. Many (not all) of the items I purchased had a sub-Goodwill, sort of grungy/dank feel to them. Many of the items had pilling, had obviously shrunk significantly, and were more "worn" than I would ever want. While it's noble to want to thrift instead of always buying new, there comes a point where an item of clothing has "gone by" (out of fashion or quality wise), and I really don't need more junk in my closet.

All in all, I'm still waiting to see if this company offers any real benefit to me. So far I'm not impressed. If you really want to make money I would probably stick with eBay.

The descriptions are poor. Two sweaters I purchased had balled material and one was actually dirty. One pair of jeans I purchased were described as bootcut and were a skinny style upon arrival, plus the sizing is off. The sweaters were at the point of becoming rags and I definitely would not consider them to be in excellent condition. I reached out to customer support, which directed me to return them as item not as described, but the site is not user friendly. I could not figure out how to even go about that from orders tab or return tab. This order was a flop! Order#*******... I also tried to attach pictures but could not get them uploaded.

Tip for consumers:
Look at images on a large monitor screen and still expand them and look closely at the material. Also descriptions are not accurate so make sure it's a bargain if you are taking the chance to purchase.

Every time I tell Threup that they need much better website programmers, they get even worse! I just call them FedUp.com now. I just checked in to see how badly they currently are doing. The site could not retain my size, although I tried many ways to trick it into saving my one size. It gave me all sizes of cargo pants. I'm not size 2. They just don't care that people give up and leave. I guess they make plenty of money anyhow. I see you want my order ID below. What order? I can't find anything on this site. I worked for the FAA as a programmer - if the programmers of FedUp did that work, you would be hearing of many airplane crashes daily. I only come for the laughs, in the beginning I could place an order. Not any more.

Tip for consumers:
I wish you luck finding what you want on this site.

The only time I ever returned something was a defective pair of sneakers. There was no purchase history on their website so I could not print a return label. There is no way to contact thredUP for help - no phone number, no chat so I had to do exhaustive searching to return the shoes within their 14-day policy. After i finally found an email address there was reluctance to refund my money. They said they would do it once "as a courtesy" even though it was their own fault for the confusion due to their website not working properly

ThredUP used to be a favorite site of mine for buying discounted used clothes. It's main virtue is wide selection. But as it's become more popular the hassles have grown, the prices risen, and the quality declined. The website has always been amateurish (you still can only proceed page by page, starting on page one). Customer service once sorted problems out by phone -- Now it's non-existent. Once there were shipping checklists of the items in your order (as provided by every other online retailed I've ever used) -- Now there are none, and you have no way of knowing what should be in the box, which can arrive torn with contents spilling out. Inevitably items don't arrive, or you get things you DIDN't order, and there's no way to sort mistakes out. Returns may or may not be accepted and you have no way to track them. "We don't believe in paper" is the excuse for all this, andt allows them to be unaccountable for anything they do.
