“Telcel will rip you off”

Cesar P.
5/10/20

I am now living in Mexico and like most other people need some form of communication. Seeing that Telcel made Carlos Slim a great deal of money, I figured the company must have some type of good rapport. However, the company has a great way of making money by not providing a service. They have prepaid plans which are pretty straight forward; you pay 50 or 100 pesos for a certain amount of time. The rip off comes when you go and pay before your current prepaid time lapses which is what I did. I paid the day before the phone time lapsed so the Telcel placed my money on my phone account as a credit of 100 pesos which is normally for two weeks of service. The following day I used the phones data briefly when a notice was sent that I ran out of funds. I called customer service and after several attempts I spoke to someone in English. He informed me that the money had been used up. After a back and forth discussion I ended up with a now rude customer service agent blaming the cahier at the OXXO, which is the Mexican equivalent of a 7 eleven. Here's the thing, I saw the cashier press the selection for the prepaid plan I wanted. So rather than take responsibility for not providing the service I paid for the agent just blew me off. I work as a customer service agent and know that that's not how you treat customers which are telling you that they will go to the competitors is the matter is not looked into. But the buck doesn't stop here. I have tried to call back to speak to a customer service manager but the phone system just answers, says it will transfer me and then thanks me for calling and hangs up. The service gets worse. I tried to contact Telcel through the Net. I managed to find a link for Telcel which seems to be in Florida. I was able to Chat with an agent who able to give me the site for Mexico. That site only works if you are in Mexico City and not in certain other parts of Mexico like Tijuana. So I tried back the US site gave them my email address and cell phone number since they seemed to want to help me. That was about a week ago. Here's the final scoop. After talking with other current and former Telcel customers, they say that they have experienced the same situation and that I just need to pay after my phone becomes inactive to avoid having my money used up as data. But what about the fact that I never purchased data, I paid for a prepaid plan and never received it. How can a company decide to use the money for one purchase and use it for something that was not agreed upon. I got smart and changed to AT&T which provides a better plan. I also found out that calls from family in the US are actually getting through on the first try, when before my family was having to try multiple times. I don't work for AT&T and have no association to them. Actually, I had changed to Time Warner when I lived in the US because I had a billing dispute with AT&T. But for now AT&T seems to be the better choice and at least hasn't ripped me off yet. In conclusion, "Telcel, this is also what you get with the 100 pesos ($4.23) that you decided to charge for a service I never received. Thank your customer service agent for this as well."
