“Smithfield Farms – Where the Owners are the Real Filthy Pigs”

Ginny D.
10/13/22

Everyone is aware of the phrase "wake up and smell the bacon." That also extends to the aroma of a nice breakfast of bacon and eggs. Or, if I going out for Chinese, baby back ribs are delish and hit the spot. So, while many muse "my thanks to the cow" after chomping on a nice roast beef sandwich, pigs deserve the same respect. That is until you consider the worst animal abusing company on the planet, Smithfield Farms. Smithfield, are purveyors of other branded products such as Nathans, Farmland, and Farmer John to name a few. It has also been cited for abuse of workers including beating them when they asked for improved wages and working conditions. This got the attention of the U.S. Court of Appeals and a ruling against this abuse was upheld. That said, I'd rather starve than indulge in their fecal infested products. And please don't forget all the U.S. lawsuits regarding the massive accumulation of animal waste, billions of gallons of manure and the stench that pervades the states where their thousands of farms have operations. So much for respectable corporate citizens that by the way, have friends that just happen to be Judges that are complicit in tainted U.S. District Courts. This is not an endorsement to go vegan as eating is a personal choice and one of the delights of life. But there is something unethical and highly immoral about squealing piglets in gestation cages where movement is so restricted that they chew the cages and go insane in the process. This is a far cry from the animal husbandry practiced by socially responsible farming that give dignity and respect to those that make it possible for us to eat foods we like. And in closing, let's not forget the tremendous abuse of chickens where the workers become so emotionally affected that they rip the heads off of live chickens and spray paint them for kicks. If you think Colonel Sanders is a cool dude who connotes positivity, think again. KFC and Tyson are runners up in the field of utter, unfathomable cruelty.

Smithfield used to be an icon of pork products. It was the brand you looked to for good-tasting pork products decades ago. They are nothing now. Everything is cut down and sanitized. The pork has lost its flavor. I avoid Smithfield products like the plague now. Anything but Smithfield. What a shame to have happened to an American icon.

Tip for consumers:
Smithfield is bad now.

I bought a bag of the Smithfield Sausage links the other day. This is not my normal brand I buy, but they were out, so I saw this brand and thought I would give it a try. I must say I was very pleased at he flavor of the product. The price was comparable to my other brand. The quality of the product and flavor has me thinking I will be buying this brand from now on.

We recently bought a package of your fully cooked, barbequed rib tips. It seems that there were more bone pieces than meat pieces. Every bite had a piece of bone in it. I was very disappointed because I am usually quite pleased with the quality of your products.

So I have purchased Smithfield products before. And they all taste it nasty. Walmart seems to sell Smithfield's meats exclusively. I will not waste money on a rub onions garlic or whatever else I put on my ribs on any of Smithfield's meat.

I purchased 6 supposed to be 10lb buckets of Smithfield Chitterlings from Walmart in December 2023. I have cleaned 2 buckets and the 2 did not make one good bucket. I have to admit, they were very clean, but there was nothing, but the thin inner lining of the chitterlings and they were all little pieces. It is awful how you people are taking advantage of the consumers and selling us this low-quality food with a higher price tag on it. I really would have been mad if I had paid $30.00 a bucket for this awful mess of chitterlings. I have been buying Smithfield Chitterlings for years, but after this, I will never buy anything with the Smithfield name on it again, NEVER!

This should bother us all and when we used to hear that China was buying America - this is a good example. This was owned by a father and son (founded in 1936) by the Luters, Smithfield, VA. Its was sold WH Group which is China owned- and considering the government - it means it can be government owned as well if a the govt deems it. It owns 146,000 acres of farm land and possibly larger than some small countries. Products quality have significantly decreased in reliability and also suspect to be shipped now from China even though they deny it JUST beware if you eat it and keep your eyes open because you have a right to choose.

The question is why the US government allowed the largest Pork distributors to be purchased by a Chinese company and why was it under the radar when our news stations seem to really enjoy reporting everything BUT things that may make a difference in what you may eat and put in our bodies?! Just beware of what you are choosing to do and who are choosing to buy from - unknowing thinking it is from a US company when it is from China and it is disturbing that it was called out just recently as such. I think we all know that China has sometimes have questionable business practices and if you compare their meat to other pork- I believe you may see the difference as I have. It is about values that have gone away in our farms that have become big business. We all have to protect our bodies when we look at how meat is processed and care for- We need to take care of this earth and what we have been given is a gift.

They do state they do everything according to USDA regulations as asked or compliant with their animal care. However, if you goggle and do your research --it is still suspicious what and why a chinese company opted to purchase this company in the US unless you see that a large land purchase of the US was enough.

Tip for consumers:
Be careful in purchasing pork products that are from Smithfield processing. It is not a US company and much as come out about one of the largest pork distributors now China owned.

My husband being a professional trucker, was curtious and kept his mouth shut when continuously being spoken to in a very rude, disrespectful and ugly demeanor. Not once, but twice. We brought a load and because we own a dog and could not walk her on the premises, we dropped the trailer as told to do by staff in receiving. Trailer left was in good condition and running properly. He was told to come back and pick up his empty trailer when Smithfield called. On our return trip, he checked in at the gate and the employee there was flippant and rude about picking up our trailer because said trailer was in a door being loaded. But an alternative trailer was given. Okay. Being professional, he went on about his job to retrieve the secondary trailer. Upon inspection after hooking up to the trailer he discovers that the reefer will not run. The yard jocky told him that it has been running all day and the trailer is his problem now. Get off the phone with your company and get off the lot now. Okay, sure. Don't mind dealing with the trailer. Even though we loose time and money at loosing our dispatched load because the trailer isn't working properly. Smithfield, your employees represent and reflect YOUR COMPANY and who you are as a whole. My husband gave respect and was curtious to employees who definatly did not deserve it in return. Shame on your behavior. Couldn't even give my husband time to deal with the broke down trailer you swapped for a running one. And you can't tell me, by the yard jocky's behavior that she didn't know it as well. Once again the North is rude and the southern kindness prevails. I expected more from this business. It seems professional only goes so far in many places now a days. I was raised to do your best and stand out and always go above and beyond, in a respectful demeanor. Too bad more folks can't follow the same life outline.

Tip for consumers:
Think twice, be kind. No matter someone else's behavior and always do your best. Never be intimidated to leave an honest and fair review.

What I mean by that is they treat their employees disrespectfully overwork them especially the four people I know that were with Patrick cudahy things leather jobs and talk highly now all I do is talk about how badly they're treated I'm doing everybody else's work while the newer people stand around and complain about it family oriented and cheating employees like family is a lie mind you I'm just going to say this up and bring it up there my son is one of them and he doesn't get angry and he does his job it goes beyond and the shy but he tells me that you single way is true at work but he likes the job and the benefits but sometimes it's not worth it to disrespect pick up yourself and know your worth don't just sit back and take it and then when you tell the Union they're really not that helpful trust me I talk to him too besides management foods and I was treated with disrespect cuz my friend had to come home cuz I fell in their house and had to call ambulance cuz I couldn't get up and I spent the night there and no key for the door and I didn't want to be alone because of a leaking toilet they told me their responsibility is to be at work not babysitting me cuz I fell sounds like I ain't going to hospital one I didn't have a key true is the responsibility cause I injured myself at their house for the toilet that was leaking which they failed to tell me and we had a debate about it I should not be questioned or interrogated because I need them to come home thank you myself at the house stay home and the key to go to the hospital and I'm an hour and I'm an hour away from my house mind you I was going to chemo also at that time and I couldn't really kill myself cuz I hit my head on the tub and they told me like I said it sounds like you do the hospital and it sounds to me like you need to have an in-house nurse instead of having my friend leave the job because I fell they let my friend come home but they got hell for it and had to go on the day off mind you working two of my friends 7 days a week and when they request off because of being short staffed in the area they always have an excuse 0 last year these two friends did not have that one day off and when they were caught in sick they were deduct points and make them make up for it while deductive points how you going to keep working in person every day of the week except for holidays and that let them have a sick day without deduction p
Points the products I buy I stand by but their model their pictures are nothing but lies so you're just straight awesome I guess that Smithfield foods makes the most money on the other ones but I'll tell you right now I see maybe 20 of them place have been there more than a year and they can't keep employees so now they're going to start using a temp agency which means I'm not definitely buying products what they really treat me the place they have and treat them like crap and I used to manage somebody to see and unless you train that comes before you get there the quality food is very low cuz it's just going there to do a job that pays way less than able to pay a regular employee benefits so with stuff like that trust me it's not going to be quality before people I know that work there two of them they're putting in the department and said it's basically self-explanatory and I don't believe it so the audio recorded because they were getting yelled at cuz they didn't do the job right when basically they're just set an the department and said it's self-explanatory the reason why they got pissed was they had wasted product which they lose out of money stop worrying about the dollar signs and worry about your employees and the quality of food and do it with respect not like your brother everybody cuz you got money cuz it's hot as fast as you get up on top is how fast your fall off I hate to see the quality food it's going to be like when the people I know that have been there for more than 2 years 27 years and know what they're doing how it feels really going to be so no I don't stand by their product or the food

I've been buying fully cooked pork sausages for about a year. This last pkg no longer tastes like the last ones, not as good. Seems unhealthy.
