Sears intimidation, bait and switch and elder abuse Abuse
July 11, 2023

While arranging for a Sears refrigerator repair, the scheduler asked if I would be interested in a Sears air duct cleaning promotion, $179 for 18 vents and $199 for 20. I scheduled for Thursday morning June 1st even though the scheduler wanted to schedule for Wednesday May 31. The cleaning group called me to confirm Thursday morning at 8am and the scheduler ALSO called me back to confirm Thursday would be fine. I was not home Wednesday, but my husband was. He was awaiting the Sears refrigerator repair service. At the designated time, a Sears truck pulled up outside our home. An enormous man came into the house and started ordering my husband around. "Calvin" said he had been told what he was supposed to do, but he said he wasn't going to do it. He told my husband we needed $3500 worth of services. My husband said no we didn't but Calvin wouldn't leave. He plugged in ear-splitting machinery and proceeded to perform the services I had specifically said he should not. We have a 40 year contract with an HVAC company and they perform services twice a year. In the end, my husband was so intimated by Calvin's size and color, he agreed to pay $2200 to get him out if the house plus a cash bribe (requested by Calvin) to knock $1000 off the $3500 bill. That evening we called Barclay's bank to dispute the charge. We sent a report and receipts to Barclay's Billing Dispute department. They reviewed the documents and told us to work with Sears cleaning company. Barclay's closed our dispute but we are re-petitioning that decision. We called Sears; all our phone numbers have been taken out of their automated system, so we can't easily connect with an agent. We finally found a way into Searscleaning and after explaining our problem, was called back by a first line manager. She was aggressive and rude. She hung up without allowing me to speak. She said my husband should have called the police if he felt so endangered. I phoned our regular HVAC company and asked for an air duct quote. They said "your system is due for its 5 year cleaning; the price is $1145." I was researching information to include with our letter to reopen the disputed Barclay's charge when I found a FOX NEWS - DC Television report from 2019. It highlighted Sears cleaning scams in Prince George's County, our county. It is relatively
Eady to find additional scam reports from other areas of the USA. Absolutely do not use Searscleaning services at anytime for any reason.

Tip for consumers:

Once you complain, Sears removes you from their auto-recognition phone system, making it doubly hard to reach anyone.

Products used:

Air duct cleaning. The promotional pricing is a bait and switch upsell scam. The equipment used blows dirt throughout the house and makes ear-splitting noise. The entire sales team is in on the scam, including at least 2 levels of management.

Should be ZERO Stars - I wish I read the reviews here first

I am embarrassed to say that I was a victim of the Sears Scam. I made the appt. For a duct cleaning. After 5 minutes, Jose was in a panic saying that I had to leave my house because there was so much mold in the ducts and unless I put in UV lamps, I would be ill in a few days. He even said he was surprised no one in my home was sick yet. He was such a great actor, he had me hook, line and sinker. I fell for the UV lamps and paid an astronomical amount - 100x what I was ready to pay for Duct cleaning, but for fear of poisoning my children, I agreed to the amount. I asked, but never received pictures of said mold, and the remediation of them cleaning it out. I called multiple times for the images and the assurance of the contamination is complete. It never came. Within 4 weeks, both bulbs started to fall out. Continued calls and appts. Made, they never showed up to fix their mess. I must have made 3-4 appts. With them to come and fix the falling-out bulbs. Then one even went out - and they are supposed to last 375 days - it wasn't even 3 months yet. Finally, 4 months later, they showed up and fixed the falling-out bulbs and replaced the one that was out. Come to learn that not only are the ones they installed not doing the job they said they should - they are too small and are in the wrong spot - but that the whole thing will be replaced anyway because where they put gets replaced with a new AC unit anyway. Needless to say, I am embarrassed that I was foolish enough to fall for the scam, but more so that the cost was 8x more than what it would actually cost.
Please let my loss, be your gain, and NEVER USE THESE GUYS. THEY LACK INTEGRITY, EXPERIENCE, HONESTY, PROFESSIONALISM, and most of all, they prey on the vulnerabilities of human kindness and concern.
