The company's reputation is significantly marred by widespread customer dissatisfaction, particularly concerning its subscription model and customer service. Many users report unauthorized charges, difficulties in canceling subscriptions, and a lack of responsive support, leading to perceptions of deceptive practices. While some customers acknowledge the potential value of the service for avid readers, these positives are overshadowed by frustrations with the platform's functionality and the quality of customer interactions. Overall, the feedback indicates a pressing need for improved communication and more transparent billing practices to restore customer trust.

I stopped the subscription, I deleted the account, and yet I still get charged. Absolute scammers, I never hated a site more.
Scribd makes it impossible to contact them to cancel a subscription. I have a subscription I don't want and i have no evidence of having signed up for this, but I cannot contact them for an explanation. I seem to have a profile on their site but cannot sign in. I have no trust in this website.
Thanks for reaching out here as well, Marguerite. Please know, we are sorry you've had trouble with your account and we are here to help you. That said, I have already emailed you back on the Better Business Bureau and through our support channel. Please email me back via your ticket #3266104 so I can assist you with cancelations and refunds there. For now, thanks for your time, and have a good day! - EC
I am beginning to feel like Scribd is a scam. I only signed up to see a template of a work document. I want to cancel my free subscription before I am charged, but Scribd is saying my password is incorrect (which I know it isn't because I used Google Autofill to remember my login), and Scribd is also saying that an account with my email address does not exist, even though that is the only email I used to sign up with and Scribd originally sent my receipt confirming my membership to that email. After trying to recover my password and contact support, I have received no reply, and after reading the comments on this thread, I am worried I will not receive a reply at all and will be charged anyway.

I suscribed in october-november, and a few days in canceled the suscription.it has been many months now and I just realized they have been charging me every month! Went back and I did not have an active acount, had to cancel my card.

ScribD has the WORST customer service when you are trying to unsubscribe or rectify an issue! I signed up for a "free trial," was charged anyway, I fought with them about it but they refused to refund me. But that's not the big issue, the issue is that they take SO LONG to respond (days turns into weeks!). So since I was charged for an additional month, the responses to rectify the issue took the WHOLE MONTH and I didn't get to use their service. So I basically paid for a month for NOTHING. Their responses are often nonsensical and come from different customer service agents who are NOT reading the history of the conversation repeating things. VERY FRUSTRATING and I let them know several times to please read the thread before responding. I told them that they are the worst and I don't even care about the money any more but I'll make sure to warn everyone about their shenanigans!
Hi Gigi, thank you for providing your feedback. We're truly sorry for the frustrating experience and the delay in initially responding. Our support staff is encountering a bit of a delay due to increased requests. It seems that there has been a little bit of confusion in a support ticket we found of yours. We've sent you a follow-up ticket to hopefully clarify the situation here. Please check your messages for more information regarding our policy and how our premium subscription works. Thanks! -AR
This "business" must be a scam. I have tried tirelessly to get in touch with someone to cancel my account (I only signed up for the free trial, and cancelled after that) but continuously receive emails back that state that there are no real humans monitoring emails. Upon asking for support or a link to support through social media, I have been sent a link to the website. Once on the website, I need to log in before I can submit my request for cancellation/refund. When I try to log in, they tell me there is no account associated with my email address. If I don't have an account, why am I being charged $8.99 a month for the past year?! I am at my wit's end with this.
Hey Carly, we're sorry for the frustrating experience. While we don't monitor Facebook messages, we do have a support team available for assistance which can be found on the Scribd website and the app. Please visit this link here https://scr.bi/assist -- This link will escalate you to a department that can help you as soon as possible. -AR
I created an account and started with the free 30 days trial period. After three weeks, I tried to cancel my trial period, but the website does not recognize my email anymore (it says: "No account found with that email or username"). I tried to use "forgot my password" but I don't receive any email either. I also tried to create a new account with the same email, but then it also says that this email has already been used by another account.
To solve the issue, I have submitted three requests in the "Support" section, but till now I have not received any feedback. I'm afraid Scribed uses this bug in its system to charge me after their trial period. Given the reviews above, my concern has even been more reinforced. Is there any suggestion for me here?
Thank you in advance for any advice or suggestions you may have for me.
Hi Peyman, we're so sorry for the trouble here! We've located your recent support ticket, under ticket number #3234668, and have escalated it to our Trust & Safety team for further assistance. You'll receive a response from a specialist by the end of the business day. We look forward to getting this resolved for you right away! Thanks! -VG
I was unaware of my subscription because Paypal doesn't work in my country. I've been charged for 8 months and I didn't know about it. I only got 3 months of the refund back. Other platforms refund their users' money back if they didn't use it. During my subscription period, I didn't even use it once. I'm sure Scribd has a tech team that can identify the user's session account and the browsing history on Scribd. Still waiting for an agent to respond back to my ticket which is #*******.
Users should be able to get a full refund if they didn't read/listen to a book. If a full refund can't be given they should be given a 100% discount code equivalent to their subscription period.
Hi Monique, we're sorry for the frustrating experience. Upon review of your support ticket, it looks like this issue was resolved by the agent you were working with as of April 1st, 2021. Please direct any and all questions or concerns you have to them via email so we may best assist you. Thanks so much for reaching out and have a wonderful day! -VG
A friend bought me a 6 month gift card. I was excited because I read a lot on my nook and it was nice of this person to get me something that I would use. I entered the site and began trying to find books to read. The selection is limited and does not let you preview the books. It takes too much time to find what you are looking for. I could not figure out how to log back on and find the book that I started. I called the person who bought me this giftcard and told them to try and get a refund because I will not be using it. I love my Nook.
Hi Alan, thank you for bringing this to our attention. We're sorry for the trouble you encountered navigating the site. We do offer our full library to view and each book does have a preview period. Someone from our team would be happy to help you out if you're still encountering difficulties and need further help. Feel free to submit a ticket for support here: https://scr.bi/assist -AR
Was promised to have my money for the last month back. I hope that will actually happen. Also, a tip for everyone, ask them to delete your banking details
Even though I unsubscribed from free trial, still got charged for 2 months of subscription. Funny thing is, I didn't even know that it is happening, because you do not send any receipts. Support doesn't answer, obviously. Now, after I read all of reviews, I'm scared that I'll have to change my card. Support ticket #3237701
I cant access my account with google. ıt says log in successfull but it dont load my account. And when ı try to log in with android app it says you have been logged out. What should ı do.My account is *******@gmail.com and my order is Order #*******
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We're sorry to see you're having trouble getting logged in! We've escalated an existing ticket you have with us and someone will be reaching out to you soon regarding your account. -AR
Scribd is definitely a scam. I tried several times to cancel effective 3-14--21 and they ignored my request and charged my PayPal account. I have tried several times to get them to refund my $10.71. They have ignored mt requests for my refund several times. I am going to challenge this on PayPal.
Its a shame that a company that offers a good product and even after advertising you can cancel anytime but refuses to honor that and still charges people abd refuses to issue a refund.
Please be safe and don't subscribe to this fradulent company. I doubt that the authorities know they are "sharing" copywriters books. They should be shut down.
Good enough product but terribly unimpressed with their customer service or should I say they have no customer service. Abd they lie about their refund policy.
We are so sorry you've had trouble canceling and, please know, we are here to help! Please see this article on how to cancel: https://bit.ly/3gxxTVT and update us here if you need more help. Thanks! - EC
Cancelled my account yet they continue to take money out. No customer support to follow it up. Straight up criminals. Had to cancel my credit card so they couldn't take money out.

PLEASE NEVER EVER GIVE A GIFT OF SCRIBD TO A STUDENT OR THEY WILL HAVE A HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE! BEWARE OF predatory billing, also... lots of complaints about that, too.
Go ahead and pick out those books you want to read... SCRIBD will freeze them for a month, release one to you, then freeze the rest until next month. Especially true of audiobooks!
When you look for something else, SCRIBD will give you photos of a bunch of LIBIVOX (free) books. SCRIBD also makes "Best Seller" lists with ancient LIBROVOX books. It's just another jaw-ish gyp. Beware.
It was a gift to me for a year... hah; don't give it to a friend! It's a disgusting ripoff.
Any response to customer service takes weeks, and they've just cancelled people who have complained.
They also will cut off access to a book for 24 hours if they decide you've accessed your membership from "too many browsers recently", and then if you click the question mark to see why - you get a dead link!
You never OWN a book the way you do with Audible or Audiobook, and can't go back and reread a book without a membership; you're just paying to read... and they hide the real bestseller list, and generally are just so stingy, mean, and shifty that it's pretty unbelievable. A BIG NO.
Thank you for your review here and we apologize for the frustration and for the delay from support! While we are excited that Scribd has been growing as a community, we have admittedly not been able to respond to our customers as quickly as we would like. We're working to improve this moving forward and, in the meantime, I'm more than happy to help in any way I can.
Scribd is a monthly subscription service that gains you access to our monthly rotating library. Books cannot be purchased individually and titles will rotate as you read. That said, however, there will always be an unlimited amount of readily available titles to enjoy on Scribd while you wait for other titles to become available again. You can read more on how our subscriptions work and what is included in them here: https://bit.ly/3pebekD. If you would like to read more about how our rotating library process works and why, please check out this support article here: https://bit.ly/3oK7abz
That said, we do have measures in place to help prevent abuse of the site. You'll be able to read any title from the Scribd collection using up to 3 different browsers or computers within a 24-hour period. If you're using the Scribd app, you can save content on up to 4 devices for offline reading and can open any given title on up to 6 devices, although this may change for specific titles depending on the agreements that we have in place with our publishing partners. You can read more on that here: https://bit.ly/38IIr1U
I hope this information has been helpful and, please know, we are here to help if you need it. If you have an open ticket with support that you are waiting for a reply on, please let me know your ticket number and we'll be happy to escalate your case to an agent who is available to help you as soon as possible. Otherwise, thank you for your time here and we hope you have a great rest of your day! - EC
Ended 30 day trial and now my account shows that i have no subscription. Yet im charged everything month. No email to reach out to staff. No customer service.
From the looks of it, many others are having this issue. Sure sounds like a scam. Then they'll blame it on a duplicate or fake account. How many such accounts can you have? Clearly your services are not secure then!
Thank you for letting us know and I am sorry you're having trouble contacting support! We will make sure your case is escalated. Please use this link to contact us: https://scr.bi/assist and your ticket will be forwarded to the top of our queue where one of our agents can help you ASAP - EC
I have been getting charged for a year and a half at minimum from this company every month and I don't even know what it is. I initially emailed their customer service last year and they said they couldn't find my account. Well obviously because I don't and have never had one! They then wanted the last 4 of my card and all my details but then said they couldn't find it still so they wanted me to send the 10 digits of my credit card along with the security code, expiration date, etc. with all of my other details. Starting to think this company whatever it is, is a complete and utter scam!
We will never ask for your full payment information and we want to ensure you are being assisted to the best of our ability. Please provide us with your ticket number and we'll make sure one of our agents gets back to you as soon as possible.
Absolutely terrible customer service. They renewed my subscription and I immediately contacted them to address this issue (within minutes of the email confirming my renewal), as I did not intend to renew. They were slow to answer and in a couple of instances, their customer service representatives refused to even answer but instead just marked the ticket as "completed" without any response. I've subscribed numerous times in the past but I will never consider doing any business with this company ever again. I would not trust them with my money and they have some of the worst customer service I've ever experienced.
Hi Casey, thanks for reaching out. Just to clarify, Scribd does not "sign up" or "start subscriptions" for our users without their consent. In order for someone to have an active subscription with us, the only way to do so would be for them to sign up when creating an account or restart/renew their membership from their Account Settings page.
Additionally, when you originally purchased the trial, you agreed to the terms and conditions under the Subscriber Agreement (https://support.scribd.com/hc/articles/210129486) that stated this was not a one-time purchase, but instead a recurring month to month subscription. Scribd does not offer a standalone free trial. We apologize for any confusion here.
With all of that being said, it looks like you're already working with one of our specialists in your recent support ticket, under ticket number #3172071. Since you issued a dispute through Paypal on your account any refunds due will be handled through the dispute resolution system at Paypal. You will need to refer to Paypal for additional information on this dispute; Paypal will also notify you of any resolution in this regard. The specialist you're working with has already informed you of this and confirmed that your subscription is canceled and you will not be billed again. Please continue to correspond with them via email if you have any other questions or concerns. Thanks! -VG
I'm on week 3 of no resolution and I'm frustrated to tears. No matter what I do, my voice is not heard. I'm a college student that lost my job during covid. I've used all my savings to take care of my family, what little money I have, I need. I signed up for a free trial to look at one book related to a school project and I cancelled the subscription afterwards, or so I thought. Then I become sick and did not closely look at my credit card bills. I never got any emails asking if I wanted to be subscribed and no reminders. In all the months I was subscribed to scribd, I only got one email that looked like a spam email asking to rate my satisfaction with Scribd. There is no mention in this email about being signed up for a subscription. To my horror one day, I noticed a billing for scrubs and I think, what on earth is Scribd?! Scribd has been charging my credit card for months and refuses to refund me these months of an unused subscription. The customer service person told me that they can see that I never accessed the site. They refunded 1 month but I need all my money back. A multi million dollar company took what little money I have and won't give it back. They offered me a free trial and did not make it clear once you took advantage of the tree trial and unsuccessfully unsubscribe that you were in fact subscribed. No emails were sent notifying my that I was subscribed. They then made a policy in which they refuse to refund your money.
Hi Jaclyn, we're sorry for the frustrating experience. We are unable to process refunds outside of our 30-day Refund Policy guidelines (https://support.scribd.com/hc/articles/210133986) due to limits that are set entirely by our payment processor's parameters. To put it simply, we are physically unable to access or edit transactions that are older than 30 days. We apologize for any inconvenience that this causes. However, we can confirm that your subscription has been canceled successfully and you will not be charged again as we cannot bill an account that's no longer rendering services with us. Thanks for your understanding here, and have a wonderful day!
Some people say that the website is awesome with lots of good books. But they intentionally made it very difficult to cancel membership and made it impossible to get a refund past 30 days, even if they knew that we had not used the service.
I'll never support your business model, and will choose to directly purchase any books I want even if that means I'll pay more.
Subscribed to the free trial a year ago and was sure that I "canceled" the subscription right away since I didn't find what I needed.
Well I probably didn't click the hard-to-see button on the last page so I didn't really cancelled it. Had just found out that I've been billed for 12 full months.
Finally made sure that I cancelled it, and hopefully will be refunded for the last bill & not be billed again. However "It's extremely important to note: You must contact us within 30 days of a charge for a refund. We cannot grant you a refund for any charges that are more than 30 days old."
Well if it's extremely important how about making it a bit easier to read or cancel? Count me in for the class action lawsuit!
Hi Keren, we're sorry for the frustrating experience. We sincerely apologize for any confusion with your Scribd membership and the cancellation process. To clarify, it is absolutely impossible for us to bill a canceled account as it is no longer rendering services with us. We actually have a detailed, step-by-step guide on how to cancel your subscription successfully in our Help Center here: https://bit.ly/2UpEyYF

Back in 2018, I had to read one book at college, so I used the website / App SCRIBD! When I finished the book I deleted the App and went into iPhone Settings / Apps / Purchases to be sure it was canceled! — Fast forward to 2021 — I noticed that an odd 8.99 a month fee was on my bank card dating way back to 2018! I was furious to learn that SCRIBD was still charging my card. YES INDEED. I logged onto their website — logged into account — and attempted to UNSCRIB! It was impossible! Both the website and the App guided me on a wild goose chase trying to cancel. It was a rigmarole nightmare! Took me an hour — lots of googling — and finally a YouTube video to show me how to cancel this shady membership! Be very cautious. I used other book Apps for college and never had an issue — the last book app I would ever recommend is SCRIBD! Their name alone speaks for itself because once you are SCRIBD — you can't get Unscribed! So be very careful! Don't do it — if you see this app turn around and run — run away fast
