I have a Premium account with Roommates.com. Why are all messages going unread? I've never had this happen in the past. It's like no matter how many potential roommates I reach out to, this is happening. Frustrating..
I spent the money on a premium membership and completely regret it. I reached out to over 20 people and got a response from one. Let's do a side by side comparison! Number of responses for a roommate: Roommates.com -1 / Craigslist-28 Actual showing for 3 rooms: Roommates.com - 0 / Craigslist - 7 Rooms rented: Roommates.com -0 / Craigslist - 3 Cost: Roommates.com - $17.98 Craigslist - $0.00 Avoid this FAKE website.
4* for not making everyone pay and the limited number of people I can communicate with inside the app. I used roommates.com to find a roommate to move into my place in 2005 and again after I moved in 2007 (14 years, then he moved out and got married). I'm looking again and pickings are a little slim since I am looking for only a mature/no drama male. I am a woman and prefer not to tell someone my name and where I live until my fiance and I have had a chance to meet and chat with them, so Facebook is not an option. So, I'm resigned to paying $15 a month and staying on top of the new listings so I can contact potential renters before they get jaded by the scammers. It isn't perfect, but I don't blame the site for that and they do have a report button and you can block people from messaging you. If they can't read my message and aren't willing to pay $15 to find a place to live, they probably aren't going to pay $45 for a background/credit check or pay their rent either so I won't contact them off-site. As far as paying, do you work for free? I'd love to find a roommate site that does a background/credit check as part of the sign-up process, would get rid of the scammers and some of the non-paying and violent/dishonest roommates and well worth the price.
I have used roommate. Com for several years. It is a little more expensive then other sites but in the scheme of renting, it is not ridiculous. I have sent many messages that have gone unanswered. I assume the receiver did not want to pay to get the message. I feel like if they will not pay to receive messages one they're not very serious about finding a place to live and two if they won't pay $15 to help themselves find a place will they pay the rent repeatedly on time. I have been successful using this site. I do wish it had a cheaper annual fee that you could use instead of the shorter more expensive ones.
Although i agree there are unquestionably some fraudulent click bait profiles on this site. There are a slew of honest listings with credible leads to real humans. I'm currently in the process of linking with another roomie's and have found and spoke to a few people in a few days. I have also come across a few fake accounts and subsequently nothing bad has happened to my money or account.
People here are blaming the site for mistakes they made as if roommates.com fraud them. One lady blamed the site for her rape, after admitting she allowed someone to get her drunk even though she is a self admitted alcoholic! That is batS*#%.
My only complaints is that the site layout isn't that good and there are several glitches. Also the information you can list and prescripts are not that good. I do like the smiley system, but ultimately it doesn't mean much.
I was scammed much worse by other roommate listing sites. While i paid for the 5-day subscription. The account managers quickly reimbursed me when a problem occurred with my account being scammed. Also the managers responded almost immediately to my complaints and questions. That is pretty amazing considering there are thousands of users in my city alone.
The big issue for me was i was unable to link a photo, and they have a strict policy on linking numbers and emails. Which means many people are writing out there info in broken scripts to keep the site from locking or blocking the information. But this is an understandable solution to trying to limit spam and scamming.
Overall i think this is one of the better sites, and is not fraudulent as such as rommiemates.com and roomster.com - DO NOT USE THESE SITES
Roommates.com is a great service that connects you to trustworthy people. I found a great roommate from this site! Giving 4 stars instead of 5 because I don't get nearly as many leads as I do from other sources [i. E. craigslist and facebook], but in the end Roommates.com was the source that ultimately allowed me to reach my goal. Very easy to set up and free to use
God sent me the right roommate. Thanks to roommates.com. It took awhile but it happened. Lots of screening but worth it.
Yay! I found my perfect roommate through Roommates.com. It works! Thank you to the team at Roommates.com and to everyone that responded to my post. I wish you the best - ALEX
I've used Roommates.com twice in the past year, and have had excellent success both times. Yes, there are scammers. (Just use your common sense.) Yes, it costs money. ($20 is a great investment to find someone you're going to be living with for a year!) Yes, it works. I would highly recommend it. Not everyone you email will respond, and not everyone who responds to your post will be someone you emailed. But by using the website's mail feature to communicate with potential roomies before giving out any personal information, you should be able to find a great match. It's worked for me twice, and I'll definitely use them again when the time comes! Good luck, be safe, and enjoy your new roommate!
The site served me well; I paid for a membership and found someone close to where I lived before and it was worth the time and bit of money to find a place and a rent I could afford, since I didn't qualify for an apartment on my own. The website itself feels a bit "retro" and outdated, but since it is mainly textual, everything loaded more easily.
If you add a phrase in your ad about checking background info you will have better luck. Meet people at public places first before bringing them to your home. I asked that applicants bring their driver's licenses and proof of income to meetings. Talk with friends about how you can do this in a way that meets your needs and respects your future roommate. Put things in writing before moving in.
GReat notifications, great profile setups, my only complaint would be the price it could be a few bucks cheaper
Found some matches right away, and yes, I had to pay in order to read my messages or respond to potential roommates. In the end, I found a great roommate in the city I live in, and it all worked.
Its a great website, I found what I was looking for a great roommate but I would recommend they get an app for android/iphone devices
There were only 4 matches, probably because I'm an older man. Still, one of them replied via Roommates email, and after a few exchanges, we switched to our regular emails, and I was accepted! I had not heard of roommates.com before another friend told me about it, and I'm obviously glad I gave it a try. I only paid for 3 days, and that's all I needed.
Tip for consumers:
Trying it for $5.99 for three days was worth it to me.
Got a compatible roommate, however, the site wanted me to pay $9.99 for membership to read the emails. We ended up having to text instead of using the inbox in the website. If we could read emails without being prompted to pay, I would have given 5 stars. Overall, good experience and I would use them again.
I love you roomster website, its helpful website for rooms&aptartmentshere
The process was pretty painless and the daily matches gave me plenty of people to contact. Found a roommate yesterday!
If you are looking for a roommate, this is the best and probably safest site to find what you are looking for. I previously looked on craigslist and that was a huge mistake!
Inviting someone to share your home is stressful and risky for both parties. This is a nice way to get to know a little about the person without letting everything out all at once. This was my first experience with finding a roomer. Now, I have the extra funds I need to keep my household above water, and she has a safe comfortable place for much less than extended stay. My only small complaint is you must register every time you want to open a prospects profile. Not a big problem but it seems a little unnecessary.
Overall, this company reached the people who might be interested in renting where I live. I will use them again.
