“The worst website and App I've Ever Used”

John C.
2/17/24

It is extremely difficult to use their website and App. Nothing seems to work consistently. I can only access them via iPhone, although I would prefer to use my laptop if I could. But am unable to create an account or sign-onto it if I use common laptop browsers like Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. And they have been unable to fix the problem. Another major gripe: They list 12-15 participating restaurants in my city. Upon researching that list, I've found (so far) that two are permanently closed, and one closed but reopened under a different name which I don't see on their "list". Found one I liked. Their website showed they are alive and well. But they only open at 4 p.m. 7-days a week. No problem, but if you buy one of the certificates for this restaurant, it is only valid before 3:30 p.m. And you'd play heck getting a replacement certificate! Do your research if you use Restaurant.com.

I've had $15 certificates for 3 years that I keep exchanging for other ones because the places don't accept. Every restaurant has said they contacted restaurant.com and they are still on the site. Call first to see, also the majority of the time it seems like places about to go out of businesses at any time. Only once has my food been worth the price before coupon and that place eventually stopped accepting them. I no longer have a local place within 50 miles that accepts them despite 5 still being sold on their website. I have also emailed them each time I went to a place that didn't accept them, no response ever.

Difficult to use on web page with very limited local restaurants. I have over $200. In money to use toward restaurants purchases and haven't use in years because of difficulty in redeeming. Very few restaurants that are listed have too many restrictions. I rather get my money back that I spent thinking this would be a convenient option to dine out. Aren't

It sometimes works and other times you end up saving no money as you'll have to spend more than you anticipated to meet a minimum purchase. My way around that was to order another meal and take it home for the next day. The other thing I noticed (and I've seen this mentioned in other reviews) is that if you show the coupon prior to ordering you will indeed get less than stellar service AND your portions will be smaller than other diners who've ordered the same thing. I've looked around at other tables and noticed this. I have one coupon left that I've exchanged a few times but will no longer purchase new ones.

Got $200 in credit at Restarant.com while in Vegas. Been trying to use it for r 8 years. They send me an advertisement almost daily for a restaraunt that closed 4 years ago and has an active market in its place. I've informed Restaurant.com numerous times that the Bakery/restaurant they advertise and offer a discount to is a closed establishment. They couldn't care less apparently. You'll have to do your own investigation before purchasing a discount. Make sure the place is open and the discount is being honored. Honestly a lot of work for little benefit. Was a great product when we first got the credit. I wouldn't waste my time on it if I didn't have credit.

I feel like restaurants are below average, some of them have a minimum spend amount, and don't accept credit cards if you use the restaurant.com certificate. So there is a lot of limitations on how you can use the certificates and cards they have.

Tip for consumers:
Better don't use it and not waste time

I received a $100 restaurant.com gift card as a gift (of course); what I am getting at is that I never personally paid for the gift card or a certificate through restaurant.com. When I saw all the restaurants that were listed on the website/app, I thought it would be neat to check out so many mom and pop restaurants as well as cafes. My first two restaurant experiences/uses of the gift card went by without incident. On my third try, the restaurant owner claimed his restaurant just ended up on the website, he did not recognize/honor the certificates, and he never came to any deals with restaurant.com. Moreover, he claimed that restaurant.com would not respond to his inquiries. I went to another restaurant after this without incident. Noting that several restaurants from the website/app no longer existed. At this point, I was thinking the website/app was not up to date and the owner's situation from the third try was a one off incident. I recently traveled to the Dallas/Fort Worth area, where I came across several restaurants that reiterated what the owner from my third try stated. In addition, they verified that, aside from receiving the forced/surprise advertisement on the restaurant.com website/app, they received no monetary benefit at all from restaurant.com. One restaurant owner went so far as to give me my $10.00 discount without using the certificate. After I experienced multiple incidents like this, I decided to leave $25 on the card and throw it in the trash. This idea is good (certificates for mom and pop restaurants). I appreciate the idea. However, after digging into what restaurant.com does, its business practices are so shady that I want nothing to do with it.

A bunch of restaurants on their site that offer coupons has closed. We went to one this evening that no longer takes the coupons and said they've contacted restaurant.com several times to let them know the coupons are no longer accepted. Dumb. You should call a restaurant and ask about coupons before you go and end up paying way more than you expected.

This is a great concept in theory, but after all the fine print, lack of customer service, slow website, and horrible app... it just isn't worth it. Nothing works correctly, can't even log in using the user name and password, can only use Facebook.

I got a Restaurant.com card as a gift a year or so ago, only to find out that I can getgood deals on the coupon, but have to spend a minimum of $50 at most places, even Pizzeria's and cafe's, that I want to go to. I can't eat up $50 of food myself. Even with my wife, we can't eat $50 worth of food in a Mexican restaraunt. I'm in Florida, not New York, so prices are reasonable, but still... For instance, a $10 coupon for $4. But I have to spend a minimum of $50. Rediculous...

This site is poorly maintained. A large number of restaurants listed are out of business or dont take them anymore. Impossible to contact Restaurant.com people due to their message system not working. It's like Russian roulette when you buy a certificate from them.

Don't use restaurant.com. Great prices for certificates but so many of the places listed are no longer in business. Restaurant.com says you have to "exchange" them for other choices on their site. However, the choices are very limited. Use your money for other discount sites like. Better selection for places that you have heard of and are in business. Disappointing.

It's a scam. The process works but you don't save any money. You must pay full price and the minimum purchase is double the coupon value. I ended up paying the same amount as I would have if I didn't use the coupon. The web site is complicated and not easy to redeem "certificates" to buy "vouchers" to print out, or display on your phone.

Tip for consumers:
Don't waste your time.

I tried using their coupon and it was hard to navigate and cash in the coupon. The restaurant called the Dam in Broadbrook Connecticut worked with me and we were able to cash it in later on that day. But it was a pain to do on both of use through the website. It's not as easy as it looks.

I went to El Fogon in Oak Creek on Friday night. When the waitress saw I had a Restaurant.com coupon, the price of the drinks went up by $1.50 each! What is that crap? I talked to the manager and she basically said too bad,"no one else complained". I had a whole big savings of one dollar! Wow! No more Restaurant.com coupons for me! That is for sure

Here was the latest big deal from restaurant.com:
"72 Hour Special: $40 for a $1000 Hotel and Resort eGift Card Featuring Hilton Hotels World Wide"
Well, I followed the link that let's you check availability and discount price. I found a place I want to stay. The price was $159.00/night. If I buy the card for $40, then I can use it four times. This time, I could get $40 off the price with a 2-night stay. So I come out even on first use. Pay $40 extra to get $40 back. But, wait, I look up the rate on the Hilton web site, and that rate with AAA discount is only $143.00.

So, why would I bother paying restaurant.com?! I say, "Meh!" 2 stars. I would make it one star, but in theory I could save a bit more by using the card the second, third and fourth times. But when it comes right down to availability and REAL price, this trouble is hardly worth it.

We have been going to the Inn for many years, but recently we found that we were less than happy with the service. There is no reception room, so when guests come in they stand in the way of the busy servers (who ignor you) and you are also in the way of other people coming in... and going to the restroom. The most recent visit was very disappointing; they forgot to bring my salad, when the server came to fill the water glasses, she delivered basically warm water without any ice; the dinner of scallops was mediocre at best. The server brought our plates to the table and did not warn us that the plates were seriously hot and I actually burned my fingers touching it. We had to wait forever for the checks despite the restaurant not being that busy. We had to flag down the server (once we got her attention that is). Disappointing to say the least.

I have gone to plenty of restaurants to find out they do not accept the certificate. The restaurants claim they never consented with restaurant.com to use them or they did and no longer accept the certificates... in any case it is a wasted trip and time on my part.

I have learned now to call the restaurant and ask before going. When the certificates do work, it's not bad hence the 2 stars.

Why is it that some of these internet sites no longer provide a customer service number to talk to a live person? I have an issue with a prepaid gift card and it takes days to hear back from them (if at all). Their service has deteriorated and while in the past had no issues, I would currently be hard pressed to by another voucher from them.

All I can say is do your research first. I purchased some certificates to use at a restaurant in our local mall which was listed on 5/30/2014. I tried to use them today only to be told that they do not participate any longer. Their words were "we have contacted them repeatedly and asked them to remove us from the program but they still have not done it". After managerial discussion I was kindly advised that I could not be compensated by restaurant.com then I can come back and they would honor my certificate this one time. I thought this was a very kind act. I notified R.com so they can remove them. Let's see what happens. I am not upset just very cautious after the experience.

Some restaurants participate if you're spending cash, but don't participate if you're using a gift card. Once you select "redeem gift card" the list of available restaurants shrinks. Gift card scam.

O received a gift Certificate of $100.00, a while ago, but up to today no able to redeem because the offer on this site are too low. I just don't know what to do with this stupid Certificate. If I use $40.00 Certificate I have to spend, minimum $200 at restaurant. What is this? The deal is only good for the restaurant and to the site, For me nothing. I am extremely unhappy with this. So, if you want to give me a gift certificate. Please do no - DO NOT - go for Restaurant.com

First off, what people say about R.com here are all true. I'll try to share everything in bullet points.

Good: If the restaurants accept it, then it's worth the price you pay
Bad: Not all restaurants accept R.com certificates. Call in advance or simply pay before you eat.

Good: After your first purchase, you will get promotions such as $25 certificate for $4 or five $25 certificates for only $20. (it's still a good deal)
Bad: Be careful, they do NOT refund the purchase price regardless what the reason is.

Good: They list all types of restaurants, from American to Asian, to Mexican.
Bad: Their "distance" is bogus. I searched restaurants within 15 miles within the vicinity and the results even listed restaurants 25 miles away.

Good: No expiration date on the certificates
Bad: Don't matter. Sooner or later, either the restaurants refuse to accept these certificates, or they stop their "contract" with R.com

From experience, restaurants normally charge a gratuity or "extra" tax if you decide to use R.com certificates. (not mentioned under Terms & Conditions). Overall, I'm satisfied with R.com, but based on the hundreds of reviews I read, R.com is not on anyone's side. Not restaurant owners or consumers. They're there to make money from both ends. They are more of an online restaurant advertiser.

I can't say they are a scam, but I definitely can't say they are good to use. Use it at your own risk!
