The company has garnered a predominantly negative reputation, with numerous customers expressing frustration over inadequate customer service and unresolved refund issues. Common complaints include misleading pricing, unexpected charges at pickup, and a lack of accountability when problems arise. Many reviewers felt deceived by promotions that did not translate into actual benefits, leading to perceptions of false advertising. While there are occasional mentions of successful rentals, the overall sentiment indicates a significant distrust in the company's practices, suggesting a pressing need for improved transparency and responsiveness to customer concerns.

We used www.rentalcars.com to book a week's rental car in Sicily. We also ordered a full insurance on the car. We paid with Visa card in total DKK 3,221.50. On arrival in Sicily we were refused to get the car on the grounds that the Visa card used was a debit card. The result was that we never got access to the car we had ordered and paid for. We were told to settle the matter with rentalcars.com. We have since communicated both orally and in writing with rentalcars.com, which refuses to refund anything other than our insurance money. Our claim is that rentalcars.com has a responsibility that we were not warned that the card we used to pay for the rent could not be used on arrival, as required by car rental. It is a very simple matter to let a website check the debit / credit status of a payment card, which is why we should have been warned already at the time of payment that this card could not be used in the further process.
There are indications that this "shortcoming" on the website is a deliberate part of rentalcars.com's business plan.
We contacted our bank and made a claim in which we asked them to have our money returned. After days and hours of documentation we got the refund, not from the company, but through the help of our bank.
I booked at the Las Vegas airport. I was only booking a car at the airport because we had gotten into a car accident on the way to the airport. I had to cancel my flight so I could go check up on my friend at a nearby hospital. I have documented proof of this. I could see there was something wrong on my order and immediately went to modify it online but it kept saying there was an error.
Then tried to cancel it by phone and the number I reached said the offices were closed. It sounded like it was the UK. Finally I found another number and the gentlemen said I couldn't cancel it even though I had just made the order 20 min earlier. He only took off the insurance but I was still charged $134. This is a terrible way to run a business. Do not use this service!
I had to pay 185$ to hold a reservation, they gave me a booking number that was non-existent. The car rental agent could not find the booking anywhere. Ended up paying several hundred dollars more for a late night, last minute reservation. Trying to contact them was like trying to win a staring contest. On hold for over an hour before i gave up and called my credit card to just go ahead and dispute the charge. It seems like a total scam.
I could not pickup the car on time due to traffic congestion. The outlet closed at the same time as pickup time at 10am and I was not adviced. Tried to pickup next day on Monday but was not able to as car company did not respond. Rental charged me full price for no show. I had called the car company hotline as stated on rental agreement hotline on the day itself but was told it was not accepted. Beware that the T&C is applied blindly. Most car rental company do not charge until vehicle is picked up. Never again will I use this site or service.
I booked a Renault Clio for a 24 hour rental for £267.68 at Birmingham airport via rentalcars.com / Sixt, upon presenting at the collection desk I was told I wasn't eligible for the booking due to having 3 points on my license from a single minor motor offence committed 11 months prior.
There was apparently some small print buried in the text of my rental agreement stating I needed a full clean license, when I tried to phone rentalcars.com they flatly told me I should have checked the conditions of the booking and that no refund was possible, except for an insurance refund of £28.70
I paid hundreds of pounds to rent a small cheap vehicle due to a last minute emergency, which mistakenly lead me to believe I could expect a modicum of customer service to be included, but ended up having to go next door to Enterprise rent-a-car and pay again for another rental due to this "problem".
I strongly advise anyone not to make a booking with rentalcars.com or Sixt, they are unscrupulous traders who will bury undesirable terms and conditions within the rental agreement, which will likely lead to you being ripped off or unable to rent the vehicle, or possibly both (as has happened to me).
I showed up a few hours late for an 8 day reservation, and they cancelled my reservation and made me make a new one on site. I didn't get the refund, because I didn't have service in São Paulo, Brazil to call them right then and there. I then paid for the same reservation again through the actual rental company and paid less than through Rentalcars.com. It's a scam. Don't use it. I proved to them what happened when I returned home, and they "solved" my claim by telling me it was too late to fix it.
I WISH I COULD GIVE 0 STARS
As someone mentioned before this is a company with no morals
I am so disgusted with the lack of support I received. All I wanted to do was modify the name and they wouldn't let me.
I had to pay an extra 200€ to rebook the same car directly with the rental company
When I called crying to ask for help the customer service agent hung up on me
Please don't book with them and go directly to the car rental company
I want to tell you a story that was with Rentalcars. I was traveling in Prague and booked through the website of Rentalcars car rental with Elmo from the airport in Prague, when I arrived to pick up the car just in time for me, I noticed various Elmo car rental closed. There is no phone number or any sign that the car rental shop is active. At that moment I called Rentlecars to cancel the order and check why the Elmo car rental agency is closed. Rentalcars customer service received the call and everything is documented even sent me the call in an email complaining that the agency is closed. And sent photos of the closed agency. Everything is documented. I was told by a rentalcars company to open a case after a week to get a refund. And to this day half a year after the event I have not received any refund the amount of rent was about $ 500. In all the cases I contacted Rentalcars closed the case claiming they spoke to the Elmo Agency and the Elmo Agency said they were on the spot and the agency was open even though I keep sending the facts proving that the agency was closed. Rentalcars is an unprofessional and immoral company, its customer service is poor and it turns out to be a fraudulent company that stole money from a customer. The company did not provide an answer to all the evidence it received and simply ignored me the customer without any ability to do anything against it. It is not advisable to mess with this rogue and immoral society just thieves.
When I arrived at Cancun Airport in March to pickup my car rental the rep. At the office there tried to sell me extra 3rd party liability insurance for 10 days at $55 U.S. per day (more than twice as much as the rental) even though it's included in their contract (and by law in Mexico). My Gold Visa card covers me for collision. I told the misguided kid at the Rentalcars.com office there to cancel the rental but I was still charged. When I returned home I filed a formal complaint with them but they will not refund my money ($278 Canadian). I have now taken it to my Visa card company to attempt to reverse the charge. We'll see.
I rented from Thrifty next to Rentalcars.com and there was no attempt to EXTORT money from me.
Rent from RENTALCARS.COM at your peril. I'd give a negative review but that option isn't available.

I booked through Priceline and was redirected to this scam site. They charged me for 2 reservations. I cancelled one and was then sent a confirmation the day. THE CAR WAS NOT READY AT THE AIRPORT AND THEY REFUSE TO REFUND MY MONEY BACK1
I contacted my credit card company and they said they would not refund me despite cancelling and picking up because I reported them to my credit card company. BEWARE!
I tried to book a car on march 28th. They took my money and no confirmation. Hard to get money back.
This is a criminal company. Cancelled my booking three days before arrival and offered me another car at 149% higher rate

Booked my car using rentalcars but the booking was due to technical error not processed correctly. Agent from Rentalcars.com asked me to rent a car directly from Europecar at the airport assuring me that my costs will be refunded at full. Since this time, I opened several claims, wrote hundreds of mails but the firm does not respond to any of my claims. Total loss is circa. $600.
Quick to take your money! Turned up at Orlando International airport with 6 children. Went to Hertz to collect car - no record of our booking, said we should have been there in April. Hertz would not honour the contract from booking.com. Got cut off 3 times on the phone to Rental cars.
Initial booking we paid £1000 for 2 cars - we have yet to get that back. We had to pay another $2000 PER CAR to hire from Hertz.
This is still ongoing - you cannot call anyone, you cannot get hold of anyone.
Absolutely the worst company. Please don't ever book with them.
They canceled my booking, i couldn't contact anyone by phone. I paid full amount and received no refund. I will never use again.
I booked a car and during booking i had accidently entered wrong email, but correct card number. Charge was done, but never received confirmation so i rebooked. I sent them an email to double check that i haven't done the booking twice. They said no but then my ard was charged twice! I sent to as a refund. They accepted their mistake and said that their finance team is working on the request. I never received a refund!
Made a booking - did not receive a booking reference - spent hours on the phone, chat line and e-mails, was in contact with several very unhelpful staff, all of whom declined to offer any assistance at all. If this sounds familiar just look at their other reviews... Am now going to try to recoup my losses through the small claims court.
Booked a car, when I arrived at the final location it turned out that the car is totally different (miles different) and they do not have an automatic transmission available.
I cancelled the booking and did not take the car, but rentalcars refused to return me money back.
I paid for the service I DID NOT GET. I equal this to a scam.
Terrible if not a horrifying experience.
Rude staff, made us pay for insurance on top of the one we already had for no apparent reason. Challenged us for a missing hubcap on right front tyre, even though they told us at pick up that this is never noted down! No GPS at pick up even though we booked for it. Charged me for gas even though I dropped the car with right amount of gas.
SCAM! Rentalcars.com, часть booking.com, является мошенничеством. Нечестный
Tip for consumers: Booked a car Rentalcars.com. In Romania - Worst car rental company ever! Do not use Autonom Car Rental at Bucharest Airport Otopeni OTP, Romania at through rentalcars.com They do not have any customer service.
I went to rent a car through rentalcars.com, and paid for my rental. They automatically enter your country of residence based on the IP when you book, then voided my reservation as a result. Renting a car which was cancelled without a refund.
Dont rent from these people!
Worst custumer service ever. Nobody cares about resolving anything. Paid for a rental almost 2000 dollar when i got to the airport they cancelled the reservation. After 2 hours on the phone they... Telling i did not pick up the car! When i was right there at the rental counter! Total Scam!
Answer: Good luck with that one, I'm in the same boat, I'm going to pass my situation on to the travel doctor at the Sunday Times.
