Odesk is absolutely horrible! Do yourself a favor, save you time and money.
I hired a company by the name of Techvalens to update my software on Odesk. They are based in India.

Between Odesk and Techvalens you have a perfect case study on what is wrong with outsourcing and why you should avoid it at all costs. Techvalens does not know how to manage a project and they are always trying to rush the work in order to meet milestones and get paid. What you end up with is a project that works in general but has a lot of bugs that they now want to charge you to fix. Totally bogus.
As I mentioned I hired Tehvalens on Odesk to update software. I hired them in August of 2013. The project was supposed to be completed in November of that same year. Six months later not only was the simple update not completed but I learned that they did not even know what they were doing in terms of the language update/Internationalization that was being performed. I had an outside firm assist with the language translation strings. He absolutely blasted Techvalens for their incompetence.
After they were exposed I asked for the return of my code which I had already paid for. Before returning it, they deleted my users data base and updated the software so that it did not work. Now, my original code had all kinds of errors and it did not work properly. I knew that they had tampered with my code because I had the final demo version on my iPhone. It worked well. No bugs at all.
I then went to Odesk to complain that the freelancer was withholding my original software code. Odesk has done absolutely nothing but hide behind their dispute resolution team. They promised me in writing that they would freeze the freelancers account until they gave me my code back. That was a lie. The freelancer gave me bogus software back and then claimed that they did not want to perform any more work. Odesk let them get away with this and now I was stuck with worthless software that I had originally spent thousands on.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY ON ODESK.

One item to note, Odesk has now merged with Elance. Also, the BBB website is a little misleading. On the face it only shows you the items that were resolved with the help of the BBB and those items that the company made an effort to resolve. What it does not show you are those items that were not resolved simply because the company (odesk) refused. You have to look for the unresolved items or know where they are.
One final note, to resolve my complaint I simply asked for my code back and I asked that Odesk simply remove the freelancer (Techvalens) from the system so that they do not hurt anyone else. They flat out refused. Odesk is only interested in their bottom line. Don't waste your time or money.
Read your terms of agreement very carefully. It is written so that you cannot sue odesk unless you do so in California. If more people could sue them without having to go to California they would be out of business. That being said, they will tell you that they have a dispute resolution team. They well hide behind the dispute resolution team until you simply go away.
I was looking to expand my business online the internet for my items to find much easier for customers to look at and review. I wanted a PHP website with Magneto to help keep the website items under control. I had a total of 3 freelancers I hired to work on my website. First one ran up a $85 day with just working on a prototype Adobe Photoshop on my website's main page. I am not a professional Photoshop user, but I could have done better myself. I fired that freelancer and thought I give oDesk another try. After looking though 34 resumes, I hired one freelancer that had a good business outline of what he was going to do while designing my website. Our first meeting on Hangout he stated, after I wanted to add a few more web pages to my website, that would be an extra 60-80 hours of time. I was shocked for a few more text pages with required information from my credit card provider. So, this freelancer was fired without any work being done. I thought that I give oDesk freelancers one more chance and hired another freelancer. I told him before hiring him the information and pages I wanted on my website with PHP and Magneto. But first, I wanted a better temporary website page than the one I had made myself. The first day he ran up 8 hours and 50 minutes of time. 5 hours just setting up Magneto and 3 hours and 50 minutes on a photoshop pic of the main website page. I put a freeze on the project till I could talk to the freelancer and ask why my direction of the project was not carried out. Talked to him over Hangouts and was told by the freelancer that "this is the way the websites are made". Never would admit that I was the boss of the project and it was my money he was racking up for items I did not direct him. So after an hour of trying to get an answer from the freelancer, I fired him and filled out a dispute on the 8 hours and 50 minutes of time he racked up. Still waiting on the outcome from oDesk if I will have to pay the freelancer or not. But till then, I recommend that you DON'T use oDesk. I am not sure what I am going to do about getting a website designer now, but it will NOT be with oDesk. Thank you for taking the time to read my review.
UPDATE: Since writing this above review, oDesk came back and stated that I was responsible to pay for the 8 Hours and 50 Minutes for work done. My best advice is to just stay away from oDesk and find someone face to face that will do the work you need. As for myself, I got on YouTube and found a walk-through on setting up Magento. It took some time, but I have my own business website up and working with credit cards.
My biggest tip is NOT to use oDesk to hire from for your website designer needs. Plan and simple....
Since this thursday (Sep 4th, 2014 - Local Time Germany - CEST +0200 UTC) I did not to use this web-platform. The problem is really strange, and totally disrespectful with people is trying to do the right things. The first point, I create my profile with my real name, with my real picture and with my complete professional background (I don't like to expose my life at Social Media Websites, example). The website shows that my profile is everything right, absolutely right (I made screenshots), my profile says: 100% and Checklist Complete. Amazing thing is: I'm 2nd in the ranking oDesk Readiness Test taken on Sep 5th, 2014 - "2nd out of all ******* test takers" - test completed with 8 minutes from 60 minutes allowed. But not so far CSS, and HTML5, with excellent scores too. However one test that I made yesterday, the Network Concepts Test, is not displaying on my profile, I made the test with good score too, but it is not displaying, why? I don't know!
I tried to contact the support since my first problem: Apply for a Job!
The Support or Help oDesk Center answered me friendly and fast with one screenshot about my Overview Text, but I found profiles with the same mistake and they are allowed to work and with old registration.
But it's fine, we are here to respect the rules, any case this ruler are not a "real" specified rule, but I want to work and to find a solution, and not to bring up a problem. I made the changes, exactly, what they said to me, I made and after a couple hours: Nothing. I create another request at Help oDesk Center with another ticket number! Nothing! Interest thing is that I received another e-mail from the contact support center but with out solution and it says that I need to wait the answer of Marketplace Quality team. Although this is important but I need to work, I'm there to start Business, and this "Corporation" is just using methods that we know exactly what is this, for someone has degree in Computer Science and the first Computer was a Sinclair ZX81 and still update, principally in Web-Branch, it's disgusting to see these situation! I'm in Germany and many people says that oDesk is a good website for Freelancers. But my experience is disgusting. And I try to search, and I found many people around the world with problems at oDesk Website! If we are here to work, we need to work, great business, 10% and other taxes, profile and personal information, like address, telephone, account bank, for nothing... Be careful, I will wait an answer about this review and I hope that oDesk start to work decently with people is caring about work and business!
Try to find other solutions and alternatives, because sometimes, you will waste your time, and of course, time is money!
