I have been involved with MyRacehorse since late 2022. I only buy one share of any horse - just enough so that I can peek inside and observe how they train and manage their horses, especially their 2 year olds.
So far I've bought into 10 horses. Only 3 of them are actively racing since 5 of them are 2 year olds currently in training. The other 2 have raced once and are in some kind of holding pattern; either perpetually hurt or perpetually at the farm, or both. Fortunately one of my currently racing horses has placed a few times. Despite this, I've received only $10 in winnings.
I did a pretty extensive review of their race records since the beginning of MRH. It is not good. Most of the horses they offer in no way recoup their costs. One bundle of 3 horses they offered a few years ago made only $720 - 2 of the horses never even raced, and the other raced twice (this one horse cost MRH $600,911 - ouch).
While they do have winning horses, they are not usually owned outright by MRH, but in partnership with multiple owners such as Spendthrift and Madaket Stables (their partners when they owned Monomoy Girl, a $4million+ filly). During this partrnership they earned $350,000 for 2 races-- a pretty good return. But how much did the individual MRH owners receive? I wonder.
And that's the problem. For all the supposed transparency of this organization there is still very little clear when it comes down to the actual dispersion of earnings. In my case, my horse has currently won $259,000, but I have only received $10 (which came from his first win when he earned $57,750). He placed 3rd a few weeks ago, but when it came time for dispersion they chose to withhold the money so they could cover any fee should he enter a future race. Hmmm...
I've outlined my experience just to give you an idea of what you might expect from MRH. I think I got lucky and purchased a decent runner who is actually winning. Despite that I'm not receiving anything. And most of the horses they purchase do not run anywhere near as well as my horse. So if you are looking to earn money from horse racing, your best bet is to simply place a bet on them (they have joined up with 1stBet.com to make that easy). Otherwise, all you can hope for from MRH is to be able to enjoy perks like attending watch parties and 'Owner Celebration Dinners' (but only if you win the lottery). You can also see you horse if they and you happen to be in the area- again, sometimes by lottery.
I did not expect much from MRH and am getting exactly what I wanted out of it- an insider view of the horse racing industry (granted through MRH's filter). But it is still instructional when it comes to racing strategy and how individual trainer's handle their horses. But that's just me. If you actually hope to have a winning horse and make some kind of earnings, your odds are pretty bad. But MRH is definitely winning. Even though their horses aren't exactly earning MRH is wracking up huge amounts of money selling all kind of high priced souvenirs with each horse's name brandished on it.
I fully expect some kind of class action lawsuit in the near future due to their lack of financial transparency about 'costs' and the inability to sell a horse if he/she turns out to be a one of their usual non-winners
Purchased Super Stable of 26 horses advertised, listed only 24 horses and now only have 5 left but 2 have not even been sighted King of Swords and Not so Shy.
Of the 18 sold they have gone on to win 9 times, 2nd 3 times and third place 10 times earning $207,139. We miss out on this money and sold all 18 for only $182,450. If kept would have collected more and still have an interest.
So far only have $16 in wallet and with only 3 horses left no way are we going to reach the minimum $50 before we can take money out. Wins a big race pricemoney $ 82,000 and 1 share you get 64 cents.
Also all the horses while in stable earned in pricemoney total of $645,055 but from My Racehorse calculations they are saying only $522,630 mening around $122,425 not included. This mainly been from
1. Tanto $ 43,000 short
2. Artic Fairy $ 47,900 short
3. American Liaison $ 17,200 short
4. Crystalaa $ 18,000 short
Best Horse Archer County if had kept only down -$ 9,770
Rocked if kept had no starts but since sold 17 starts for $ 50,260 in pricemoney, again far better than King of Swords or Not so Shy to name a few.
Worst Horse King Of Swords cost $ 600,000 has not started and kept.
Darksaber sold but if kept only down -$ 487,665 but at least racing.
Management and trainers geld the horses for no reason or sell for no reason, bad trainers and jockeys main reason or wrong distance entered to race.
Think the Queenslnd Punters Club a few years back while not good a hell of a lot more honest than My Racehorse. Definitely not interested in any horse trained by Gai Waterhouse, since the Waterhouse's should not be allowed on a racetrack after Fine Cotton scandal. They have never given me back the thousands of dollars lost because of there involement in Fine Cotton scandal.
I have bred and shown quarter horses for years and the one thing is that you will never make any money off of most horses. They cost more to keep and train then they will ever pay back in winnings...although you do once in a blue moon get a very special horse and with a lot of luck you could make a killing...but that is NEVER the norm. Owning any horse is a losing proposition between vet bills, shoes, equipment...and a lot of the time your horse has something going on that keeps them from being of use. So don't ever look at horses as a means for profit. What I love about MyRacehorse is that I pay one fee that is less than the cost of day owning a horse and I get a tiny share of one that I do not have to groom, feed, water, exercise, call the vet...and for that small investment for that tiny share...I get to stand with my fellow shareowners and yell and scream at my horse crossing the finish line first and the high-fives and hugs and then we all gather in the Winner's Circle for that photo which then gets my name on it as AN OWNER...and then the champagne toast and the personal talk with the trainer and jockey and then entering the races that lead to the Kentucky Derby and getting those elusive points and going and my horse WINNING...and those who don't make it...what an exciting rush? MyRacehorse offers exclusive tours of the farms to see your younger horses or those that need some time off due to the pressures and injuries, just like you and me when we work out too hard or pull a muscle and need time to just rest. MyRacehorse is very transparent about the training and care your horse is getting and there are videos and reports every few days, interviews with your horse's vet, trainer, etc. There are private luncheons and track tours and you ARE TREATED LIKE AN OWNER. I now have over 30 horses in my account and my calendar is always full with races to see online or in person. I have yearlings that I am eagerly watching grow and learn and I have a Kentucky Derby winner and Eclipse Horse Of The Year whom I now get breeding money for. My trainers are Pletcher, Mott, Cox, Lukas, Asmussen...our jockeys are Smith, Rosario, Ortiz, Pratt to name a few. Our horses race at Churchill Downs, Gulfstream, Del Mar, Belmont, Saratoga...This is not just some penny ante fly by night thing. This is as close as you will get to owning a racing thoroughbred for under $200. That's less than a meal for two at a nice restaurant and you know where that goes? So, do not listen to those reviewers who are angry because they did not make any money. They knew going in what this was about and if they were that uninformed or believed in something that could not happen then that is their fault and had nothing to do with MyRacehorse. I love it. I know horses. I am in and will continue to buy more.
MyRacehorse is a company with a deliciously ironic name, for no one who buys any of their shares in a yearling – they are actually units in a speculative investment trust, not shares – has their own horse at all, they share a unit in it with thousands of others.
OurRacehorse would be a far more appropriate name for the title, although the truth be known OurBigSkim would be the best name of all, and the closest to the truth.
As you see in the picture at the top, MyRacehorse is offering what they claim to 0.2% shares in this Extreme Choice filly for $165, all expenses included.
Their big banner headline claim is not quite correct though, or anywhere near it.
You have to read the fine print to get the real picture.
What they are really offering the come in spinners is 0.02% of a 40% share in the horse.
That makes it a bit different.
Why?
Because the suckers real share of the whole horse is just 0.008%.
That's just the start of the shake, the intro to the grift.
The yearling in question was sold just three months ago through the Magic Millions sale ring.
The purchase price was $280 000.
MyRacehorse are trying to sell a 40% share in it for $330 000.
That's value for money isn't it?
They say that they are only charging you $62 for the value of the horse.
That amount is actually correct for a 1/2000th share of 40%.
But to buy in you have to pay $165, not $62.
So where does your other $103 go?
Here.
PER SHARE PRICE BREAKDOWN
(all numbers are approximate)
Horse value: $62
Acquisition Costs: $3
Prepaid Expenses: $68
Management Fee: $32
20 percent of your money is being paid to the promoters as a management fee.
That's outrageous
So are the claimed prepaid expenses of $68 out of each $165 unit share.
These fees are essentially for training and training related expenses, and are being calculated on a rate of $80 000 per year for a full 100% share in the horse.
No trainer charges $80 000 a year.
At the top end the overall annual cost to train a horse, with all things included, is $50 000 – $60 000 maximum.
MyRacehorse are skimming an additional 30-40% off the top.
It gets better, or worse as the case may be.
Those are only the costs up to 30 June 2014, when the filly will be just four years of age.
You as the unit holder pay the whole whack after that.
Authentic's stud fee was 75,000 and revenue for MRH was 1.6 million dollars and now they decided it's up to share holders to pay the debt back and liable for things that were previously said no additional cost.
MRH has distributed share holders 35.00 from 2021 breeding season revenue. This is completely ludicrous and a scam after sitting on our monies for two years and not paying a single penny to shareholders.
MRH is a scam!
Novel racehorse ownership syndication model developed by Michael Behrens features the ability to purchase "micro shares" of racehorse ownership at a cost that includes the capital cost of ownership plus two years of upkeep and training expenses for your horse. This model allows literally thousands of small investors to participate in the excitement and thrill of big time horse racing for only a small fraction of what it would normally cost to purchase ownership shares in a racehorse. After a few years of getting my feet wet in the racehorse ownership business with a couple of "traditional" style syndicates where a relatively small group of owners (e, g., 20) purchase ownership percentages in a certain racehorse partnership (typically a minimum of 3-5%), and then are also responsible for paying their respective ownership share(s) of future upkeep and maintenance expenses, administered on a monthly or quarterly basis, I invested tens of thousands of dollars of my retirement nest egg in horses being offered by MYRACEHORSE. What I didn't think through enough before I made my investment switchover to MYRACEHORSE is something that should have been a front and center consideration in my thinking and that is good customer service, or lack thereof. I experienced the type of customer service you can expect with MYRACEHORSE when I recently made the trip from my home in South Florida to upstate New York to attend opening weekend of the Saratoga Thoroughbred Racehorse summer meet. Early morning the last day I was going to be at the track I called MYRACEHORSE and requested that a representative make arrangements for me to visit one of the horses I own with MYRACEHORSE in her barn. To make a long story short, I was told that they could not accommodate my request. I was with my brother and nephew, both of which have lived in the Saratoga Springs area their whole like, both own horses, and both know their way around the barns at Saratoga as well as anyone and the MYRACEHORSE people wouldn't even give us a barn number for the horse so we could find the horse ourselves. I was totally embarrassed! What's the sense of investing tens of thousands of dollars in a horse(s) if you can't get the opportunity to see it(them) up close and personal. With the traditional racehorse ownership syndicates I have dealt with in the past a request to see one of my horses in the barn would have been accommodated no problem. Live and learn. Sooner or later, companies that fail to provide good public service will pay the price in the marketplace.
