“Great for Networking - Use Appropriate Caution”

As with ANYTHING, buyer beware... I've used the free level of Model Mayhem since 2011 as a model... it has served me well... the vast majority of people I've met and worked with through the site have been really cool people, just there for the business of art and modeling... sure, there are creeps... hello, a certain proportion of the entire human population are creeps... be honest and direct, set your boundaries and stick to them, say so when something bugs you, meet in person for coffee first before shooting, and if ANYTHING feels the least bit off, LEAVE... bring ID to prove your age, and if you're under 21, DO NOT GO ALONE! And, for f*cks sake, don't do anything to impair your ability to advocate for yourself! Myself, I choose not to drink during a shoot, and I choose not to engage in anything that restricts my physical movement, or my ability to speak, with anyone I haven't known for a really loooong time... exercise prudent caution! Model Mayhem is not an agency, it is not a model management company, and they never claim to be... it is just a networking website... if someone presents themselves as representing Model Mayhem to book you for a gig, do not respond, they're a scam and spoofing them... Used with candor and appropriate skepticism, this site is excellent! I will update when I try out the paid levels...

“Some of the moderators are jealous old men who used to be photographers.”

Model Mayhem already has issues with old creeps asking girls to do more than they agreed to. But I am a woman who used the site for a brief period of time and realized something else that marks this company down. They also EMPLOY these old creeps to shut down accounts with the dumbest excuses you that you need to sign up again and pay them more. Not safe to use for modeling, and not safe for your business either. Waste of time and money.

So I never really had an issue with the staff until I did. I notice a lot of complaints about Model Mayhem Mods and I can attest that it is very real.
Once you get on their radar it's over. I was a long time customer and have made many good friends via MM.
I got banned for this.
When I tried to ask why they accused me of having a fake account. I never had a fake account.
They are dishonest and manipulators.

Tip for consumers:
Don't ever get on their radar. In my experience there is no mercy or honesty if they have their sites set on you. Don't sign up for the VIP like I did. The free basic is more than enough.

The majority of the photographers listed have amateurish photos at best. I signed on as a model to do some unique projects with established, creative photographers, and so far i haven't found anyone even close to what i want. I had better luck cruising instagram. Nearly every job offered to me had no pay or some kind of weirdness to it, or both. I'm on the verge of deleting my profile; i've kept it because its a quick reference tool for when i want to show someone something i've worked on.

Most models won't show up for appointments and you stand to loose a lot money in the process.

Only go after models with a known body of work.

The people that are creating a commnity there is great. You can learn allot from the photographers in the forums and it is some very talented people there. However, the MODERATORS are control freaks and I truly believe they are bored and tend to go a little overboard with their power to grant people an account and take them away by using loosely defined terms of service. The first thing they did was clean out allot of the older members by finding minor instances to remove them "improper use of BB code" or "Representing as an agency or promotion company" and other creative ways to clear out the free members who initially could upload 30 photos but new members are limited to 15. There are other instances of taking sides in a dispute, and blatant racismI've read tales of in some forums. I would not go back even if they paid me and I now know there are plenty of alternatives available.

Model Mayhem is a website run by a non-professional imature team.
They answer email in a months time(They do not even have a phone numer!)
They ban members for no reason, after they paid.
Do not give this company your money!

It used to be good. Then people unqualified to run a business were promoted into management positions, and they can't manage. The website is now falling apart and lots of the best members have already left. What's left over is very mediocre. Until the current managers are fired and replaced by someone who knows what they are doing, I don't see any improvement on the horizon.

Model Mayhem Review
In the likeness of being fair and balanced I would like to make the following analogies of the Model Mayhem site.

Moderators: The Moderators of this site (the top one percent) appear to me to be overly indulged college kids and nothing more. They mainly come out when someone alerts them to a site that might be a threat to their overly active pornographic website as it is labeled. This subject keeps coming up more and more about this site, and they even have this information posted when you request to be a member of this so-called elite site. Yet after careful website crawler and ranking status, this site is no more ranked than the convenience store down my street. Top number one rated for networking and collaboration I think not, read more on this below.
The MODS: (same as moderators only the worker bees of the real Moderators) these are the ones that really need a reality check. Most of them are so-called friends of friends of friends, when speaking in terms of who's who on this site. Many or the mass majority of these people are young, snot nosed, immature college kids that found their way into the world of Moderating this site. Probably because of the amount of pornography that is allowed. These are the very people that state "do as I say, not as I do." In other words, they tell you not to post pornographic material, yet they condone it to the fullest extent. Many claim to be photographers after taking a class or two at a college or somewhere else and claim their right to fame and fortune. Others are self taught, yet are the more talented of them all, given the fact that they are the ones that have not been corrupted by the mass of the industry.
Photographers: I have found that many of the photographers on this site and I do mean many, but not all, are giving this site a very bad reputation for being the bad apples in the bunch. They have seemingly eluded the fans of moderators who are suppose to ban such materialistic pornographic snap shooters from sights such as this, yet they condone the very existence of its presence until someone complains, and then the complainer is banned for complaining. WOW! This site is very much starting to sound like our very own government in the works. And to think this might very well be the very people that run our government. God I hope not.
Many so-called photographers find themselves in the predicament of seeking out models who are naïve and new to the industry, only to find out that these photographers are predators in search of pornography for their own liking. Showing off their trophy by means of the model mayhem web site only brings down the site itself and what it's supposed to stand for. Much of the so-called photographers claimed to be professionals within the industry which is not regulated nor is there any way of verification of their credentials. Merely the fact that some of them claimed to have gone to college for photography, knowing all good and well that just taking a photography class does not make you a professional photographer. Claiming to work for Playboy or Maxim magazine, has been heard so many times over knowing that you can be verified if you have worked for them, yet there is no viable proof or evidence of these photographers ever working for these prestigious companies who have worked hard to gain the respect of the public unlike the photographers who claimed that they are someone they're not. Merely stating that you've been published and then posting your photographs on model mayhem does not make you a professional photographer. Clearing concise credible evidence showing where you are published is what the public wants to see not a mere statement of something you have not done. All too many times models can be naïve and fallen to this trap the leaving the are someone you're not, and thus bringing down the industry that much more. It is obvious that you're not a professional photographer, when all you have on your site TFP shoots for your own benefit of pornography at its extreme level for your own jerk off section. In many respects a photographer should be charging models for taking photographs rather than paying a model for photographs. Understanding this concept, would bring back the respect that a photographer deserves for the work they are doing using their equipment. Models on the other hand should know their job inside and out as to how to pose, do their own makeup, without being told how to do it. The only time that a photographer should be paying a model, is when they are being cast for commercial work or print work, or something of this nature or the model will not be allowed to use the photography of free rein on their site or within their portfolio. This is where the breakdown in communication between photographer and model within the industry has come to a pass.
Models: many of the people at the site both male and female claiming to be models, need to look up in the dictionary the very basic terminology of what a model is supposed to do and be. Far too many times, when flipping through the site at taking clear note of models that want to be paid for service they have no clue what they're doing when they claimed to be a model. Having little or no experience within the industry, these individuals demand payment for their mediocre and inexperienced poses. After being lured to a photo shoot by a very clever photographer, or in this case sexual predator, the model now feels that they are due restitution by anyone else they come across for the transgressions of a prior photographer. This is where many models gain the experience of claiming that they're professionals themselves, when in fact they're just merely amateurs trying to break out within the industry. Far too many times I've worked with models or so-called models, so that they could get professional photos taken of them without having to pay for them. Far too many times, models have responded to the industry by staking claim that they should be paid for doing very little, knowing very little, or unwilling to do the job that is needed with me a model. This in itself is a bad name to the industry itself must causing a black mark within the industry. The very action on the model's part of being ridiculously unreasonable, unprofessional, and just downright rude is unacceptable within the industry and I have found a very easy to just pass over these people who call themselves models. Not to say that the photographers don't have their fair share of unprofessionalism, please read about this in the photography section.
As stated above and the photography section, a model should know what they're doing before they get to shoot. A model should not automatically assume that they're going to be paid just because they're considered a model. A model should have to pay a photographer for the use of their camera and for prints that they will be allowed to use on their portfolio. A model should be allowed to be paid, when the photographer is doing a casting for commercial work prep work or something of this nature where a release form is signed and the model can not use the photos for their portfolio because it is thus the property of the person casting and paying for that service. Just because you're a model in the photograph does not give you the right to use the photographs in your portfolio especially if you're being paid to pose. Many times over I have trained or had to train on the spot while doing a photo shoot of a model that claimed to have been a professional yet did not even know the difference in modeling poses over that of just a high school pose. What you see on TV is merely that. It is only television and is much more difficult and dynamic than as seen on a two-dimensional television. Modeling is more difficult than many models attribute to the industry. Although there is many different types of modeling, many of the models that I have seen and worked with who claimed to be a model of professional status don't have the faintest clue when it comes to being a professional model. Merely claiming to have gone to the school of John Robert Powers or John Casablanca does not make you nor does it give you the right to claim the war a professional model. Merely you are just one that is educated in the basic procedures for being a model. Just because you paid a ridiculous amount of money for a basic school does not give you the right to claim that you're a professional model. Unless you are hired by an agency, are represented by that agency, and are paid by the agency to do work within the industry that you're nothing more than an amateur or semipro if you are doing anything in the promotional industry. Just to set the record straight.
Fashion Designers: first off to claim the chore of fashion designer after having on the Kmart or any other store for that matter, buying someone else's product and having a runway show does not make you a fashion designer. Buying a pattern does not make you a fashion designer, this includes following that pattern in piecing together something that was created by someone else. A fashion designer is someone who creates from their own mind a unique product that no one else has created. Although it may be of similar style and product, if it is truly yours and of your own imagination then and only then can you consider yourself to be a fashion designer and should also consider enrolling yourself into fashion design classes where you can be legally registered within the industry and accepted by the industry as a professional. Merely claiming that you design a close does not make you a fashion designer. Everyone within the industry knows those that are the true fashion designers because they are only the 1% of the industry and are paid ridiculous amounts of money for fashions that you see on television over and over and over again. Magazines are another place where you can find fashions created by the true fashion designer professionals. Although there are those that do take the time to create something of their own, they may not be considered professionals yet semi professional or just amateur because they are not paid by the status industry of fashion designers from around the world who are willing to pay for their product. As I stayed again merely copying someone else's pattern is not considered a fashion designer.
Makeup Artists and Hair Stylists: the makeup artist and hair designers on the site I have to give some form of credit. Although the efforts of many may not be legally substantiated, the mere effort and work that it takes to be a makeup artist or hairstylist within this industry is difficult within itself. To put it plainly, regardless of what state or country you live in, if you are not a licensed cosmetologist that has earned your license and have a valid paid for and registered license, you are not considered a makeup artist and or hair stylist. Just because you're good at doing those things does not make you a cosmetologist. Models and others within the industry should steer clear of any one that does not have a license to practice cosmetology. There are so many factors involved in this part of the industry they could potentially harm a client if you do not know the proper chemical procedures when applying any form of makeup or product tool model or anyone claiming to be a model. As a licensed cosmetologist, you are certified that you have an educated in the proper procedures of haircutting and styling as well as cosmetology procedures, sanitation, and other factors dealing with the chemicals that she will be applying to individuals.
Membership: I see it pointless to spend the money on this site when there are ridiculous so-called moderators, fashion artists, photographers, and models in this site calling them that which they are not. Snapping a few photos does not make you an official photographer. Going to a local college and taking a one week course does not make you a photographer. Taking classes at John Robert Powers for a ridiculous price does not make you a model. And buying clothing at a store and pretending to have a runway show, does not make you a fashion designer. All of these things I have seen from this site. People riding on the backs of the industry, while many of the true hard working individuals stake claim to the industry being so cut throat and competitive. Let's get real here people. This is not a competitive industry. It is merely a subjective one. If someone is willing to pay for your product then you are listed in the top one percent if that, but even then, just because you are lucky enough to be hired for Maxim and Playboy do not make you the best of the best. I have seen many photographs from amazing photographers, that don't work for these two listed and well respected companies, yet are given no more respect than that of the professionals who work for them.
Networking and collaboration:
Now I said I would be fair and balanced. Well, I am trying with all my conviction to be fair, yet I must state this to be fair. Model Mayhem: Practice what you preach, before we the public can even take you seriously. Your sponsor runs a pornographic shop and pays your bills for you, are you kidding. And you want to collective to take you serious. Your site is nothing more than an overly glorified porn site for luring those that would like to be in the mainstream industry, yet you have many who claim to be something they are not without any form of verification. I know for certain of this, as you have not way of verification in place to combat the imposter issue. Many times over, I have had he now's return by the system because they cannot be delivered to the so-called number one top rated collaboration network. This is in part by the fact that photographers and models as well as fashion designers and makeup artists alike are too cheap to purchase a VIP membership and support this site of which they want to be a member. Having selected the lowest standard of membership, they're only allotted somebody e-mails a day along with responses which are so easily disregarded. When attempting to post a casting call. The moderators like to think they know what they're doing when they dictate what you can and cannot say on your casting, although these are also individuals of modeling, photography, makeup artists, and fashion designers within this site. These individuals are trying to regulate your casting call that is going out to the industry or in this case the model may have web site and its members for potential work. Yet often times I have found that you're not allowed to do this or that, without the repercussions of having your account deleted for the very same thing they do themselves. Call it a black market competition if you will. In other words if you're casting sounds as though you are a real professional within the industry and are willing to post work for those who want to work, you are how casted from the site. If you later returned to the site, you'll find that they posted the exact same casting that you had up. Calling the kettle black eye would pretty but say that they are hypocrites in their own right. Having found their niche within the industry or pornography and having the backing of a pornography storefront the model may have web site in this case has been one of the most successful BS artists within the industry itself. Although successful and I will give them that, I would not give them any stars due to the fact that they are mere hypocrites themselves as well as very cleverly deceptive individuals.
Final Statement: having given my opinion of the site as well as definition to each membership profile status, I only see it fitting to give my evidence as to my professional status and where I stand within the industry.
I do not call myself a professional photographer, model, fashion designer, or that of hair styling and makeup artistry. I do however call myself a professional within the published art industry, novel writing, technical writing, professional training programs, self-help, cooking, magazine production-print-and publication, short film, song recording, songwriting, musical performance, acting, modeling, and freelance photography. Having done each and every one of these things as stated above with viable proof either by print or film production and even that of live audience, I still claim myself as a semi professional and not a high status professional within the industry. I do not consider myself an amateur, given the fact that I can train anyone within this industry that which I know as being self-taught while doing it in the industry. I did not go to college nor to some illustrious class that is overrated and highly expensive, to gain the claim to fame that will never come within this industry. Having pioneered my own career and paved my own way within this industry, I can call myself the status that I have now with conviction and the respect of my peers regardless of the overly zealous young amateur and power-hungry individuals claiming to be professionals. Now retired from the industry, I lend a helping hand to those who want or need help from an individual such as myself as to how to break through the Stonewall of idiocy that I see propped up before me.
