What reviewers want you to know

Positive highlights

  • Other auction sites can be rediculously expensive and seem impossible to win at.
  • A much easier and economical process than an on-site estate sale.

Critical highlights

  • To think they charge 1250 plus 30% and give little to no help with customer service.

I can't begin to tell you how wonderful the Maxsold Team was to work with. After losing my husband to ALS and my mother within a year, to say I was an emotional wreck is an understatement. Unfortunately for them, I was a train wreck but they all were so compassionate and helped me threw the process of getting on with a new chapter of my life, with no excess material baggage. Thank you. Shawna, my team lead is the most understanding lady. She was my rock at a very different time. Her team was outstandingly professional. Please use MAXSOLD when you need these services! Kudos to you all.

“Multiple technical issues”

Dwight Y.
3/13/24

First time seller and multiple technical issues such as: - Date I picked for pickup was not the date given to purchasers - Reports online differed from reports received (kept telling me one lot wasn't paid for online) - No instructions on what to do if lot isn't picked up - App DOES NOT link to a sale you've started - Uploading photos was a challenge Reported to Maxsold and basically told to bad. They only addressed the first issue and said a confirmation email had the same date as the purchasers despite their online system showing the data I had chosen.

Positives first
MaxSold was communicative. Staff were professional and courteous at all times. I felt safe during Covid. We sold all but 19 lots and achieved the good "clear out" that we hoped for.

Concerns
The lots were random. Bins full of power tools with no clear idea of what was in them in the photos. $500 worth of craft supplies in one lot. (Got $16.00). $700 fee and commissions meant that we only received $450 when everything was settled.

Conclusion
If you want to make a little bit of money while getting rid of a LOT of stuff in a short period of time, USE THEM
If time is not of the essence and you want a discerning approach to the your items that will ensure a higher return DON'T USE THEM.

If the measurements or description is not clear don't assume. Items look better in pictures. Unfortunately there is no way to ask about the item. Pictures lie.

Went very well very smooth. Lots of work getting it into order. Of course that was not because we had any issues MaxSold.
Mind you, I do not feel it is right to bid a $1.00 and received item. MaxSold depending items that have value should start it at a minimum. I had a sofa table bid was a dollar. I had no choice but let it go.
Think 30 percent is high commission.
All in all very happy that my items have been sold.

There are so many fantastic items that are being sold. This is a suggestion for the sellers: I realize that you want to make this as simple as possible, and having people come pick up items is convenient, but if you were able to ship some of smaller items, like rings or sports cards or lighter metal objects, you would probably get a lot more money. Small items don't cost a lot to send, charge a basic fee of for example $15 shipping and handling, I'd be willing to pay. If you take the time to make arrangements for online sale, please consider offering this option for those smaller items. Or, give a contact email if you are willing to give a shipping option. Covid complicates everything and if you make it as simple as possible for people to buy, pay, and receive items, people like me would buy a lot more. I'm in BC btw so this is how far your audience is reaching.

Called maxsold to see what hp the motor was as they did not picture it. Was told they could not help and no one could be contacted. Bought it and found wrong motor. Don't trust anything unless you see it in a picture. These people at headquarters are useless and read from a script. This is my second buy that was not what they represented and have never had any one call me with either a REFUND ( FORGET THAT, ONCE THEY HAVE YOUR MONEY IT'S OVER) or appology for wrong discription

They do a fabulous job in the presentation. You really know what you are buying. I will take issue with the potential ambiguity in wording for electrical products. I bought a pair of Klipsch speakers for $450. The description says the speakers are working... quote "as per the seller"
When I got them home they were not. We have not deduced why and will investigate further when we have time. The description lacked info on the tweeters being non original and that they were not attached to the body of the speakers.
Its an auction therefore everything is "As is" so I am basically screwed. You are basically gambling on online auctions.
Many goods are not checked and one should never take the word of a seller. Of course you will miss many potential buys because others will not be so careful. The answer is to give money back if not working when sellers says it is. Or let us come and check the product out ourselves.
They also misuse the word art and print. A print is exactly what it is. A mechanical reproduction of an original maybe. Art is surely a piece crafted by the maker or producer. If you are careful there are many bargains. Furniture is an obvious. In fact anything outside of electrics and that described as art, is a safe bet.

I am emptying my 55+ year family home... There were lots of questions but never the same answer twice.
The photographers were sent to my house with new software on their iPhones (yes iPhones) and had problems taking and storing the pictures. When scheduling for the scheduling staff I never thought my house would be off limits for more than 2 weeks

The software used is counterintuitive and not easy to navigate. Items get dropped, photos disappear and any attempt to correct them is difficult. I also feel that the level of support provided for the 30% charge is inadequate.

Only giving 3 stars because we didn't loose money (which I was nervous about at one point). But there were some major concerns:
1. Many photos that were taken by max sold staff were poor quality and one was even upside down (photo attached). This likely affected the price people were willing to pay. There should be a required standard for this or even a camera provided by max sold.
2. Photos were missed of certain lot items. I asked the team lead to double check because I thought it got missed. They assured me it hadn't. I checked the photos after and sure thing it was missed.
3. They should better explain what is needed for creating "lots". I spent hours organizing only to have them show up and say it's going to cost an additional $50 a person per hour (5 of them were there) for a few hours to organize before they can get started. This was an estate sale for my 50 year old mother who just died. The last thing a client wants to hear is that it's going to cost hundreds of extra dollars, but especially in this situation.
4. There is a missing item that seemed to have gotten picked up with a lot and i have emailed 3 separate email accounts about it and have not heard back.
5. There were lots of smoke breaks and dilly dallying (especially for $50 an hour).

For the 2nd straight auction additional descriptions details for many of my lots were never added after submitting to Maxsold in the requested timeframe. This is either a major flaw in your system or just laziness by the staff to enter the additional very detailed information for many of the lots. Very disappointed.

I can't say enough about the company itself. I found it to be expertly and efficiently run. (Better to communicate via email than by phone.) Crews sent to my home were friendly knowledgeable and efficient. A first class operation. As a buyer you can't go wrong. In most cases it's like getting the items for free. As a seller, I think the starting bid of a dollar is insulting. There might be a single item worth starting at a dollar, but overall a lot should start at $5.00 and in some cases higher. For someone to walk off with a sofa in very good condition for $3.00 is heartbreaking. The only upside to that is I didn't have to have it hauled away. Therefore my review is 50/50

I have been buying from them, but recently I've noticed that the bidding on items go outrageously high. I am suspecting Shill Bidding? I hope that's not the case. Because that will be very unethical. The auctioneer or its members should NOT be bidding in order to raise the prices. I noticed this specially when items are supposed to go together.

For the most part, Maxsold sells items from a Seller’s home as part of a downsize or estate sale while allowing family to keep the items they hold most dear and having Maxsold sell the remainder through a transparent online auction where the highest bidder wins with no influence by the Seller or Maxsold.

Maxsold spends none of it's time or money on bidding / influencing prices other than to market the goods. We take this rule about unreserved to the highest bidder extremely seriously and are able to share anonymous bid information with bidders (or sellers) that have concerns about bids. All they need do is email support with the auction and lot(s) they would more bid/bidder transparency on and we will be happy to provide it.

We appreciate the perception this bidder has, however the truth is simply that most bidders wait until the last few minutes to place their bids. Additionally, MaxSold's bidder base and auction volume is growing faster than any other auction house we are (currently) aware of.

MaxSold continues to reinvest all funds made in the pursuit of its vision of providing access to a downsizing or estate sale to any customer that wants one (http://maxsold.com/maxsold-purpose/). For those interested, check out www.maxsold.com/sell for our process and www.maxsold.com/past for our results.

I have no complaints about the professionalism and courtesy of your staff: assigning and photographing lots and handling the pickup schedule. However, several customers told me they were still engaged in bidding for the most valuable items in the auction and that they were cut off in process and very upset. I am extremely distressed that you stopped the bidding and did not afford me the opportunity to receive a better price for these items. On another note I wish there had been a better tutorial on how to modify//split lots. For example there were cases such as where several nice silverplate pieces were included with assorted trays and the picture did not make the silver items clear. I didn't comprehend that I could have split the items into two lots. Another lot of primarily silver was highly sought after and had many bids so I most likely would have realized a better price separating out the silver items. Most of my changes to the texts were handled well, but in some cases you did not correct spelling or add other useful explanatory descriptions.

We are sorry to hear that bidders reported to the Seller that bidding was somehow cut short. We unfortunately were not informed of this on the night of closing and we have no other data to suggest there was a system issue. We do know that, from time to time, issues do occur at the user end that deny them from bidding (i. E. personal internet/computer issues, bidder not providing their credit card information, bidders not following the ‘live view’ of an auction in closing, etc.). From the auction results, it’s clear that there was extended bidding on a number of items (as indicated by the ‘bidding was extended’ statement next to the “Closed” note - see link below).
Based on the bidding attendance (134 bidders) and the average lot value ($66+), this auction significantly exceeded a typical auction result. The average lot value also suggests the lotting was optimal for the mix of items in the sale (breaking up the lots would likely have resulted in less overall competition based on our experience and the data available).

If anyone is interested in seeing the results of this auciton for themselves, they are welcome to review at: https://maxsold.maxsold.com/auction/potomac-maryland-usa-downsizing-online-auction-streamview-court-20252/bidgallery/

We are sorry if this Seller felt more could have been done to increase the success of this auction. We will take their feedback into consideration in the hopes we can further improve our process and wish them all the best.

Photographs do not manifest the odor of the product. A stinking carpet, fur coat,
Or mouldy furniture is worthless. Also, be careful with faded prints/watercolors.
As well, you can be certain that you are NOT going to get a priceless work

I have purchased items from five auctions so far. Some of the items are kept with the majority resold. I have frequented hundreds of traditional auctions, estate sales, and participated in various online auctions. After purchasing $900 in items from a Maxsold auction in Orlando, I chatted with one of the employees on pickup day. He mentioned how he and his dad were bidding on many of the same items. I was a bit surprised, but he said, as an employee, he was able to bid just as anyone else. To me, this brings up the ethical debate. To me, it is no different than shill bidding. I have been to many on site auctions where workers bid, but will bow out as soon as someone in the crowd out bids them. It just makes one wonder if they are bidding to win, or, bidding to maximize the bottom line.

Thumbnail of user susheep
MaxSold I. – MaxSold Rep

We aren’t sure what this user is referring to when then say "kept with the majority resold" as Maxsold does not keep items or resell them (we have no warehouses or logistics operations to move inventory). Maxsold sells items from the Seller’s home as part of a downsize or estate sale while allowing family to keep the items they hold most dear and having Maxsold sell the remainder through a transparent online auction where the highest bidder wins. Maxsold spends none of it's time or money on bidding / influencing prices other than to market the goods. If a team member bids, they do so with their own money and under the same rules as any other bidder with no access to back-end bidding information. For proof, you need only look what’s left after an auction is over - 98% on average is sold and removed by the buyers (not Maxsold). Maxsold conducts no auctions on behalf of itself - the inventory sold is always a 3rd party seller, selling from their location. We take our position about unreserved to the highest bidder extremely seriously and are able to share anonymous bid information with bidders (or sellers) that have concerns about bids.

MaxSold continues to reinvest all funds made in the pursuit of its vision of providing access to a downsizing or estate sale to any customer that wants one (http://maxsold.com/maxsold-purpose/). Unlike the eBay's of the world, there is no rating system, where users can rate the sellers. Why bother? The majority of auctions are downsizing, a one off thing?
It the item is a "working item" and they do not say "tested, in working condition" assume it DOES NOT WORK.
If the listing is for MANY similar items, and they re NOT described in the listing do not assume anything. I have bought 65+ Lp's (they were 66), where the seller pictured 6 (Stones, Beatles, MJ, Joel) and the other unpictured 59 were non-english religious albums. But one is led to believe they are pop albums for that is what was pictured, BUT it never stated that. Assume you are buying what is pictured and described and nothing else.
Don't get caught assuming or you will get burned.

Overall I have no regrets. I love the concept, it's a valuable and clever service that's offered, and I was satisfied with the end result. But the customer service (or lack thereof) along the way was beyond frustrating in so many ways. I'm a seller and I managed my auction myself. Having never done this before, I had a lot of questions. But often phones weren't answered, voicemail boxes gave no indication if I had reached the appropriate mailbox of the Seller Support department, calls took hours to be returned, and emails weren't returned for several days (which was totally mind-boggling). Having said that, Andrea was amazing and always very helpful and on the ball, along with with a few other customer service reps I was lucky enough to connect with sometimes (my apologies that their names escape me right now). Others were downright snarky, if I managed to connect at all. Also, there were too many mistakes for my comfort level. The scheduling of pickup time slots got screwed up... twice. And still wasn't done right after the second time. As for the actual auction service, my main suggestion would be that minimum bid amounts be allowed to be set by seller. I withheld more expensive things from my auction and sold them on other platforms where I was in control of how much I would accept for them, rather than risk them being scooped up for $1 on MaxSold. This was an inconvenience to me, and loss of revenue to Max Sold, that could easily have been rectified by a minimum bid feature. Having said all that, I will still recommend the service... but with lots of caveats to manage the expectations of those I refer. Also, the cataloguing app can use some improvements. I do appreciate overall that this option was available to me as a way to clear out my home when downsizing, and am satisfied enough with the proceeds of the sale. So thank you for that. Please keep improving. I think you're onto something really amazing here.

Just attended my first auction and won more lots than planned. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful and everything was as described (down to the negative parts). Read the descriptions before you bid (about pickup times) and you won't have any surprises. This is an auction, not a buy and sell.

The whole process was easy but time consuming and takes effort to photograph and organize the product. Staff was great help and professional. What I didn't like was the high commission of 30%. Commission is collected on both ends.
It should not be more than 15% in my opinion.

I just bought and picked up my items from a MaxSold auction and they are mediocre at best. When we arrived at the pick up location I was shocked at how filthy things were and what a jumbled mess of bid lots there were scattered around the house. I managed to win chairs but lost the table auction in the last few minutes so to be fair I was not overly excited about my winnings. We won the auction of 8 dining chairs and while the bid made me believe one chair was missing a screw what was actually true is that it was missing several screws and in pieces. With the number of lots and 3 pick up times, in Cambridge MA, pick up was a bit of a challenge. First to find parking and second to navigate through a tiny house as it was being torn apart. Max sold could have done a better job of organizing the pick up lots by time to accommodate traffic flow. It is doubtful that I will use them again as the prices in the auction get raised above value doubly so for sight unseen pieces.

If you are comfortable paying Maxsold 90% of what your items sell for then you can expect to nearly "give everything away". For example, a complete desk set up of computer table, printer table with shelves and drawers and an adjustable desk chair for $3.00.
Several lots were piled up and looked like junk. Complete antique bedroom set with brass bed, chest, dresser, and wash stand gone for less than $250.
Suggestions - there should be a reasonable minimum bid with incremental bids appropriate for the item - $1.00 starting bid is ridiculous; a 10 day bidding period is 5 days too long as there was no action for at least 5 of the 10 days; the items to be sold could be more attractively photographed and displayed to attract buyers.
Beverly and Mark both did their jobs well. Maxsold did as they advertised, "got rid of stuff".
We did not know that 46 lots would net us $ 26.00 by the time we paid $700 fee and 30% commission. And 5 lots were not picked up and one was refused so we had to reimburse that bidder plus get rid of everything left over. No, we will not recommend this company nor the process.

For clarity on MaxSold’s fees, they are outlined here: www.maxsold.com/fees. Depending on the model chosen and the gross auction results, the fees can exceed the proceeds (a typical) or result in some net proceeds to the seller (typical). At the end of the day, MaxSold does not decide what a Seller needs to sell - our job is to recover value on whatever the Seller needs to let go of (typically as a result of an estate or downsize) in the time given to us by the Seller.

As part of our core value of transparency, the results of the auction in question are available for review below and, although we feel our results were fair value under the constraints outlined above, we are ultimately sorry that our seller is disappointed in this case.

https://maxsold.maxsold.com/auction/arvada-colorado-usa-downsizing-online-auction-west-67th-place-17612/bidgallery/

Where other solutions try to control prices while having no control over time of sale, we give the seller control of time while giving up control of price to market competition. For people who have items that will soon cost them to hold onto, this is the most economic (and green) solution to the problem of getting things removed on their timelines (typically for a much larger value proposition such as a closing real estate transaction or avoiding ongoing rental/lease costs).
