Even though I am very competent and highly experienced, I am usually extremely nervous when I go to a job interview and am not very confident at all at the time. More often than not, if an interview went well, there would be a question that I answered very badly and it would always be one that I knew was a deal breaker as far as the interviewer was concerned.
But when going for an interview this time, I literally stumbled on Don's interview tools, and I bought it thinking I had nothing to lose, but the cost of the guide, which I thought was a meagre amount.
When I downloaded the document, I was overwhelmed with the amount of information that I received. To be honest, I really didn't want to go through all of it so I looked for what I needed, picked out a bunch of questions that I thought would be asked based on the job that I was applying for and tailored my answers accordingly.
I spent time preparing and when I went to the interview I was so confident, I followed Don's advice to the letter. I asked almost as many questions as my future employer asked of me. I asked the two questions that Don's says no one asks but should, and I even raised the issue of salary mid-interview because, in my current position, I was earning $10,000 more than the top of the range the company advertised. I felt as though I was interviewing the company as well as they were interviewing me.
Don's interview toold gave me confident, not only in my interview skills, but also in myself - I clearly understood my skill set and my ability to convey that confidence to a new employer.
A few days after that interview I was offered a second interview. I didn't spend too much time preparing for this one because I knew my stuff and I knew that all I needed to do was to make sure that my answers in this second interview were consistent with the answers in my first. I had no problem with that because I am a very honest person and I did not have to worry about maintaining an untruth.
I guess, if I could only give one piece of advice it would be this - be honest with your answers no matter what. That way (apart from the fact that you maintain your integrity) you don't have to remember what you said last time, you just know!
Ok, so the end of the story goes like this. The day after my second interview I was offered the job, the salary offered was more than I was on at my old job, they upgraded the job to a higher level opposition, and they didn't even care when I told them that I would be going on a 4 week holiday in Europe only two weeks after starting in this new position.
The company wanted me on board and they were not going to put any obstacles in the way of my accepting the job and that is amazing!
All I can say is, thanks Don for putting together such a fantastic and comprehensive set of interview tools for people who are great at what they do, confident about making a contribution to any company, but don't have the interview skills and/or the confidence to relay that at interview.
I am truly thankful :)
I applied for a highly competitive position a while back. 450 applicants for just 10 jobs (although I didnt know that until today...) and I was offered an interview. At 48 what chance did I have. In preparation on the first day I researched (for 10 hours) the government policies and procedures relating to the job in question. Day 2 for 10 hours I revised all my previous post grad qualifications and studies. Day 3 I thought I may need to look at what I needed to do in preparation for an interview. Out of that I purchased your book on-line. Another 12 hours of hard work in preparation with 3 days after revising what I had learned before the actual interview.
This is no ad or paid bull to promote you. I had my back against the wall. I had run my own business for 8 years and employed numerous people. But here I was at 48 looking for a change for myself, my marriage and my kids. We all needed a change.
So in consultation with my wife and business co-director I bought your interview preparation book. I didnt need to learn all the answers. I learned what was behind the questions. What I gained was invaluable not one of the set questions came up at the nerve-wracking and crucial interview. But in other ways they did and because of the work I had done I was able to meet the expectations.
I had gone for the one interview and today received the call from HR 3 weeks later that out of 450 applicants I was one of the 10 who was successful. Whilst much of that was down to my own initiative, experience, qualifications and work, I have to say buying your book was unbelievably helpful. It took me the crucial extra percentage to gain the advantage and helped me understand more fully what was behind the questions being asked.
This was not a cheap shot job. This was in a highly competitive field where I had to shine to beat down 440 other people.
No one would believe I am not paid to write this to advertise you! I dont know you from a bar of soap but I want you at least to have the feedback that, thanks to you, I have secured a highly desirable post that is life-changing for us as a family and makes me excited as we embark on a new chapter in our lives.
So thank you for the help you unknowingly made as a contribution to my interview experience.
What you teach is spot-on put alongside ones own experience and abilities.
