JEGS Brand Head Bolt Failure Ruins NEW Engine
December 2, 2022

Product review is concerning these bolts.
https://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/*******/*******/-1

Extremely disappointed in being R&D for JEGS. I used a set of their "Made in the USA, of quality materials" head bolts in a really nice engine expecting the product to have the quality that other products I have previously ordered and used had. I was expecting a quality product that was well researched and tested and it was garbage.

I followed their instructions to the letter for torque specification and proper installation!
https://www.jegs.com/InstallationInstructions/500/555/555-*******_*******.pdf

I tested the calibration on my torque wrench I used on this build with every torque value change. When I built the engine; I used a stock Vortec truck intake manifold. After 500 miles I discovered a leaking external head bolt on the passenger side. I pulled it, resealed it, re-torqued it to the spec and moved on. Fast forward to now. I have a Vortec marine manifold that I was installing on it for added performance. I built this engine a year ago and put it into service about 6 months ago and have put about 3,000 miles on it. I decided to swap the manifold, that is when the trouble was found. I pulled the driver side valve cover off the gain clearance to remove the manifold. Immediately I am greeted with standing coolant and milk shake oil. I just changed the oil 500 miles ago. I generally change the oil at short intervals while the engine is still breaking in. The oil was nearly spotless 500 miles ago. I started digging into this further and found when I put the socket on the head of the bolt it literally moved. Zero tension on it, I lifted up on the bolt and it had snapped literally in half. Somewhere between that oil change 500 miles ago and removing the valve cover the head bolt snapped and allowed the head to partially lift, allowing coolant into the oil. I drained the oil out of it this evening, there was nearly a gallon of coolant in the milk shake oil. What that means is every machined surface that rides on a bearing as well as the piston rings have not been lubricated correctly or sufficiently. It has also likely damaged the cylinder head and possibly block deck surface from gas erosion due to hot combustion gaskets blowing between the head gasket and metal. I am not happy with this situation at all, given the time and money involved. I have since done some research on head bolt failure and realized that ARP warns of an issue with head bolts that have a washer underneath the head. The washer acts like a bearing and over yields the fastener, causing it to fail. ARP has known about this potential failure for some time, and it is in their instructions. Jeff Smith also wrote an article about saving head bolts and block threads that would have been nice to have seen prior. JEGS merely stated torque the fastener to 70 ft/lbs with thread seal on the bolt and 30wt engine oil under the bolt head. As I said I do not appreciate being R&D for this company or its products. In my eyes this engine will have to come apart and every component checked.

JEGS needs to provide this warning with their product to save someone massive, expensive engine destruction. Absolute failure of a R&D in a product and unless they do something to resolve this, I will never order from them again.

Tip for consumers:

Don't buy their house brand products. Buy something reputable, preferably from Summit, Rock Auto, Amazon or really anyone else.

Heartless customer service
April 22, 2022

Ihave bought alot of parts from jeggs. Last year my husband bought a camaro. H was excited to have all perfect. He ordered cregars. He recieved the front almost right away, however the back cregars just came last Friday. He had kept the front cregars in the box because who would put 2 kinds of wheel on their beautiful classic car. He was gonna put them on his car this week.He was so excited. TRADGEDY STRUCK AN MY HUSBAND PASSED AWAY ON TUESDAY. His friend went to put them on today an discovered in the manufacturing part they were not welded correct., so we could not put it on.We called Jeggsan explained what was wrong an we need to sell the car. They said because he had the wheels more then 6 month they would not replace it.we explained we were waiting on the rear wheels to put all 4 on. We told them we were waiting on the back. They will not replace it. Giving the circumstance we were waiting on the back cregars.SO THEY WONT REPLACE IT, IT WAS NOT OUR FAULT WE WERE WAITING ON THE BACK CREGARS THEY WERE ORDED TOGETHER. NOW WE NEED TO PUT THEM ON TO SELL THE CAR CAUSE OF MY HUSBAND PASSING. HOW LOW IS THAT, THAT THEY WONT MAKE GOOD FOR THE DEFECTED CREGAR, WE WERE WAITING FOR THE BACK WHICH WE WAITED 9 MONTHS. WITH THE CIRCUMSTANCES THEY WONT MAKE GOOD AN EXCHANGE THE DEFECTED ONE WITH A NEW. ONE. HOW LOW IS THAT CAUSE WE WAITING FOR WHAT WE ORDERED. I NEED TO SELL HIS CAR TO PAY BILLS AN I GOT A DEFECTIVE CREGAR THEY WONT MAKE GOOD FOR.WE SPEND ALOT OF MONEY AT JEGGS. IS THIS A PLACE YOU CAN TRUST. ABSOLUTELY NOT.
