If you're considering Intoxalock—DON'T. This company is a complete scam designed to drain your wallet with hidden charges, unnecessary lockouts, and a garbage device that's engineered for failure. Let me break it down: Their device is ridiculously sensitive. The smallest thing—like turning your key to the "on" position without blowing into the device—will trigger an error and lead to a service lockout. It's absurd. You'll get charged $25 every time you have to recalibrate the unit—and a 80 dollar fee from Intoxalock, which happens constantly. Sometimes for reasons you can't even control. Every lockout, every issue = $$$. Their device includes a pink wire that connects to your tachometer to determine if your car is running. BUT GUESS WHAT? Intoxalock deliberately removes the manufacturer's installation instructions so the techs don't hook this wire up properly. That means your car can just sit in accessory mode and the device will think it's running incorrectly. Boom. Another error. Another lockout. Another fee. Oh, and it gets worse in winter. In the Midwest, it's freezing, and no one tells you that you need to wrap the device in a blanket or else the cold will kill it. If the device freezes, it won't work, your car won't start, and you're stuck. Here's what happened to me: Last winter, my brand-new 2022 Toyota truck got completely drained because the Intoxalock device wouldn't let me start the car. I couldn't even turn off my headlights. Battery died. I replaced it—$275. Two weeks later, I left it parked for just three days. DEAD AGAIN. Another $275 battery. That's $550 out of pocket from a device that is supposed to help, not screw you. Add in constant recalibrations, bogus service fees, and a terrible leasing policy, and I've already spent over $1,300—My dui was from 2013 so the d. O. l only makes you do 4 months, well these dumb son of a $#*!s, did not look at my paperwork and had me set up for 180 days, and that was 13 months ago. And my lease isn't even up. DO NOT GET INTOXALOCK. They don't care about safety. They don't care about you. They care about bleeding you dry, one lockout at a time. If you're required to get an interlock device—look elsewhere. Intoxalock is a trap.
This company is a nightmare to work with. If you have a choice to have this device or not drive, don't drive. Heck, maybe get a bicycle. This company will find every reason they can to drain your time, money, and energy. First of all, getting the device installed and the time started is an almost impossible task. If the stars aligned enough to actually be blessed enough to actually talk to a person, you will most likely be told " we will send you an email" or " we are waiting for paperwork" when no one from the company will actually send the paperwork. The only way to get any progress is to talk to your state representative or write a bad review. My partner is the one who needed the machine installed. I had the machine installed in my vehicle trying to help. We had to have the machine in and were paying for it for 2 months before his time actually started. My vehicle started to have problems shortly after his time started. It would be fixed for a month then start to have problems and be taken for a few weeks and we'd get it back for a few weeks before sending back to the shop. 5 months after his time started, my vehicle broke down for the final time. It has not worked since. 2 different mechanics gave up on it. The company says there is NO WAY that their machine is responsible however at this point almost everything that can be replaced has been replaced on my vehicle. The only consistent factor has been the interlock. I have talked to other people who have experience with this company. One has the same maker and year as my vehicle. They had the EXACT SAME ISSUE. The mechanic who installed the machine was so fed up with my vehicle that he dropped it off with the battery dead. Knowing my partner's time would most likey pause, we would have to get it towed back to his shop to pay him $30 for calibration fee plus $75 to the intoxalock company. And thats only for a month calibration. I have not had a vehicle for 7 months and my partner's time was supposed to be over in the beginning of this month. However getting a hold of anyone from this company is almost impossible. He has been hung up on more than actually talking to an intoxalock representative. He was trying to get his declaration of compliance signed however they are refusing to sign it because our vehicle has been off. As soon as we realized that our vehicle was not gonna be running again, my partner tried to call intoxalock to let them know what was happening. Several emails send, all were IGNORED. Several calls were made, all were IGNORED! The only time he was called back was after he wrote a review talking about his experience. That helped a bit but the guy who was calling him was more interested in his taking down the review. Now this company is trying to get him to get another vehicle to install the machine in and extending his time another 5 MONTHS because he " did not comply with the whole" even though he has been still paying them money this entire time and can't even use the vehicle he is paying to have the machine in! He has not missed a payment but still to this company " he hasn't been complying enough" at this point he is paying to not drive and not have his license even though he has busted his butt and has complying the ENTIRE TIME. We went from no debt to in debt in the year span we have been working with this company. This company is strictly interested in making money, they do not care about the people, their situation, nothing. It is a money drain that will keep going and somehow it's all legal. Every time I think we are so close to being done and my partner is able to have his license back,BAM! A HIDDEN FEE FOR UNSEEN EXTENTION OR BAM! YOUR VEHICLE WILL STOP WORKING AND YOU WILL BE GASLIT AS HELL IF YOU SUGGEST ITS THE MACHINE! MY PARTNER HAS FULLY COMPLIED WITH EVERYTHING THAT WAS ASKED OF HIM AND ITS STILL NOT ENOUGH?! HE PUT IN HIS TIME! DO NOT WORK WITH THIS COMPANY! IT IS NOT WORK THE MONEY AND HEADACHE THAT COMES WITH IT!
Customer ID: *******...On February 20th I arrived at my house in my Tahoe that is equiped with an Intoxalock interlock device. I've had this equipment installed in my vehicle for 1 year and 3 months. I was only supposed to have it for 1 year but in August of 2023 I was called out of town on short notice only to arrive back into town on the last day left to have the device "calibrated". My service center closes at 5PM so I rushed there only to find that they had closed early. I arrived at 4:45PM. After a missed calibration you can't start so on the next day I loaded it onto a flatbed and had it towed to get calibrated. This earned me a 3 month extension. Ok, back to the 20th. Arrived at my house at 6:03PM and turned off the vehicle. I changed the wiper blades and went to hook up the trickle charger. I've never had battery problems before this device was installed but have had to replace 2 since then and now my current battery is on its last legs. I wanted to see if I could start the car after it had just been running so I engaged the handheld, blew zeros, and attempted to start. It clicked but failed to start. A couple more attempts were made with my jump pack but still wouln't start so I hooked up the charger and went inside my house for the evening. The next morning I went to start the car only to be greeted with a violation message. I thought this must be a mistake. I had just gotten it calibrated ($35) so I call intoxalock who informed me that their system had logged a misseed "rolling retest" or random retest. This is the test that occures after you start the vehicle and it randomly asks you for a sample to see if you are drinking while driving. According to their website (check their knowledge center) this is defined as: "A random (also known as random) retest requires drivers to provide breath samples while the vehicle is running. They're required with all state-certified ignition interlock devices." I explained that there must have been some kind of mistake. I wouldn't miss a retest, I know exactly how this thing works and wouldn't risk missing one this close to my 180 compliance. They told me what time it happened. It was exactly when I was trying to jump the car. I explained the situation and that the car was never on. I'm not going to expect a random test if it's not even running unless I've just turned it off at the same time it asked for one. I have spoken to multiple reps pleading to have this violation removed as this is not something covered in their own handbook and website. They refuse to budge and tell me I must start my 6 months all over again. I've contacted the licensing department who tell me they only go by what the company tells them and intoxalock tells me only the licensing department can make that decision. I'm at a total loss. I do ok with my income but I can not imagine how most people could absorb this kind of finacial impact. 6 days left and they hit me with a violation that will cause me to have this in my vahicle for almost two years if nothing else goes wrong. I've contacted the state police to see if they are willing to help as they are the regulating authority. I have video (with sound) of the time I arrived home to the time I went inside my home that shows that I was unable to get my car to start back up once I arrived. I also took a video from inside the vehicle today which shows how the system will fail to acknowledge the vehicle being off with the keys out and still trigger a rolling retest. I will write a new review every day for each additional day I have this device installed. If you are reading this review and are finding yourself in a similar situation. I encourage you to write your own review here on Trustpilot to warn others about choosing Intoxalock. You do have a choice. Anyway, I have a date with small claims court. Watch your backs and your wallet. Do not choose Intoxalock. P.S. There is no way in hell they get 5 star reviews. I'd bet money that the Indian call center they use for their customer service is also paid to write those which goes against this websites terms of service.
I should have done my research before getting involved with this nightmare of a company.
Interlock Device
Unless you could use more stress in your life from another mandated money grab in your already highly stressful situation, then go ahead and give this company a try. You will likely be forced to keep it in your vehicle for much longer than you thought. My example: I was ordered to have it in for a year. The set up went beautifly and they made it really easy to set up my credit card so they could take my money. THATS WHERE THE GOOD EXPERIENCE ENDS! Shortly after you find that they signed you up for stuff you didn't ask for or need and they try to get it into your lease to charge you more. Want to call customer support? Get ready to wait and when you finally get someone on the phone, you realize it's an Indian call center that gives zero fks about helping you. That was how it started. It's been a year and I'm ready to get this thing out of my car and be over and past all this. NOOPE! You have to blow and go fk yourself for 3 more months of payments, why? Because you went on military orders and missed your calibration by one day. I actually did make it to the service center on the last day that the calibration was due because my orders had ended that day and I was sure I'd make it before the shop closed. NOPE AGAIN, they closed early during their business hours. I had to pay $200 the next day for a tow to get it calibrated. I call and finally get someone on the phone thinking something must be able to be done if I explain the curcumstances. After all, I had no control over this situation. NOPE X3! THATS THREE STRIKES NOW GO FK YOURSELF AND GIVE US MORE MONEY! Call the state DMV to explain the situation, they tell me to tell Intoxalock the situation and ask them to remove it. Call intoxaslock, they tell me to call the DMV and ask them to remove it. Wonderful, both sides are telling me to talk to the other and now all I want to do is rip this thing out of my car after doing everything in my power to do the right thing. Save yourself the trouble and never get a DUI for one, and for two, NEVER USE INTOXALOCK! Customer ID: *******
Save yourself the trouble, do not give this company your money.
Initially, I talked to the intoxalock agent, Gerson Lopez, and he spead through the orientation so fast I didn't have time to ask and receive all the info that I needed, and after I I had asked multiple times for the initial cost, Mr. Lopez assured me that it was 30 for the paperwork and 140 for the install. After the install and a day of getting my license back I was instructed to download the app and upon opening the app for the first time I found I owed 200 more dollars of hidden fees Mr. Lopez failed to mention. Irritated I called a rival company and the lady informed of the state indigent program and sent me the application. I then filled it out, took it to the court house had the judge sign it and file it. Then over the course of the next three weeks I sent the paper work to them through several different non-working email addresses and non-working fax numbers. As it came up on this last week leading up to my calibration date they kept saying my paperwork wasn't valid that they didn't have copies of my id etc. Keep in mind I have already sent them all the info countless times. Today is my calibration date. The device locks out my ride at 2 pm. I call them this morning and they say that my application has to be filled out within the last 90 days. Even though my application had been signed and dated by the judge himself on July 27th. After once again sending them the paperwork once again to prove what I'm saying is right. They then say I need to send a copy of my restricted license and in 90 days they will review my financial assistance application in 90 days. Being that I am indigent, I don't have the money to pay what the state has already agreed to pay. After catching them in lie after lie after lie after lie and constantly putting me off again and again and again. I finally just couldnt take it anymore and requested a removal to take my business elsewhere. This Company intentionally and maliciously straight up wasted three weeks of my time. My anger and frustration is so great it makes my blood boil. Now after having my license a month I am back to not driving again simply because intoxalock maintains and operates the most unprofessional business practices, known to man. Every single person in management needs to be fired and it all needs to be reformed. I'm still HOT!. With all that being said. DONT WASTE YOUR TIME! DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY. CAUSE THEY WILL ROB YOU OF ALL YOU WILL GIVE THEM.
THIS COMPANY IS A SCAM. ON TOP OF MANY MANY OTHER ISSUES, THEY WILL NOT GIVE THE STATE YOUR COMPLIANCE REPORT SO THAT YOU CAN HAVE IT REMOVED WHEN YOUR REQUIREMENT IS FULFILLED. THEY DO THIS SO THEY CAN KEEP THE DEVICE IN YOUR CAR AND KEEP CHARGING YOU. THEY ARE CROOKS
Go with really any other company none of them are great but Intoxalock is by far the worst trust me.
Intoxalock is regulated by The Impaired Driving Section of The Washington State Patrol you can find their info online.
Intoxalock markets themselves as a company that keeps drunk drivers off of the street and protects the community but they do the opposite. They pray on vulnerable people who are trying to get their lives together and be better people for their families and the community. Their device is very difficult to operate while driving it's dangerous.
I had a dui over 5 years ago around Christmas and I haven't had a drink since. I've been doing everything to get my life back on track. I went back to school as a Nursing student. I go to AA, have a sponsor and help with events with AA none of this is court mandated I do it because I want to. I've finished treatment and probation with no issue. Luckily I don't want to drink but if I did have the urge I'm sure the stress that this company has put me in would drive me to drink. I've posted PSAs regarding this at all of the halls and have heard similar stories from other people. From what I've heard and read this company drives people to give up on the system and just drive illegally which is really sad because if they were a straight forward company they could do a lot of good but they aren't all they care about is money.
I work at a hospital in medsurg 30 minutes from home. I need my car for work and school. My patients rely on me to be there on time. The device has kept me from finals, job opportunities and other important school things.
Since the moment I signed a lease with this company they have made my life a living hell in the name of profit. It took over a month for them to start the process with the dmv to get my restricted license after I signed the lease. The device malfunctions constantly, and intoxalock charges $80 each time it does then $20 to CarToys to recalibrate. EVERY TIME IT MALFUNCTIONS THEY EFFECTIVELY RESTART YOUR TIME WITH THE STATE regardless of weather it was your fault or not which is unlawful. When this happens you can kiss that time goodbye along with all of the money you've given them. You have to start all over. If I was out of compliance and they didn't report the information to the DMV this is considered negligence and is a failure to exercise due care. The same applies if they report false information. Failure to disclose exculpatory evidence is also an issue here. The DMV has never received any non compliance reports from Intoxalock for me.
Intoxalock will tell you that it is up to them to decide if you're in compliance to have the device removed but that is false.
WAC 204-50-130 (1) "A manufacturer will determine a restricted operator's compliance of this section in accordance with RCW 46.20.720"
RCW 46.20.720 Subsection (4) defines the requirements for removal including (4) "Requirements for removal. A restriction imposed under subsection (1)(c) or (d) of this section shall remain in effect until the department receives a declaration from the person's ignition interlock device vendor, in a form provided or approved by the department, certifying the following:"
(a) "That there have been none of the following incidents in the one hundred eighty consecutive days prior to the date of release:
(i) Any attempt to start the vehicle with a breath alcohol concentration of 0.04 or more unless a subsequent test performed within ten minutes registers a breath alcohol concentration lower than 0.04 and the digital image confirms the same person provided both samples"
My old probation officer sent me the records from intoxalock and it shows me blowing less than 6 minutes after the false reading with a brac of 0.00
I did my time intoxalock get this thing out of my car! Reporting false information is negligence and failure to exercise due care.
Intoxalock
Where do I begin? Terrible, TERRIBLE customer service, rude, disrespectful and unprofessional, I kept a notebook to log every single call to them, I logged the date, time and representatives full name. Pages upon pages of notes because all calls to them resulted in being told varied information! Countless hours on the phone with them, it's so frustrating! The fees are exorbitant and unaffordable. What finally prompted me to write this review is an unexpected phone call this morning from a collection agency calling on behalf of Intoxalock, saying we have a balance of $200 still owed. Well how can that be when 1-you have to PAY TO CLOSE OUT YOUR ACCOUNT TO GET THE DEVICE REMOVED FROM YOUR VEHICLE and 2-the account has been closed and the device has been removed for almost a full year! I have my Intoxalock statement showing where I paid everything and had a $0 balance on 7/28/22 and then on 1/19/2023 Intoxalock is charging us $200 for a "protection plan claim". My husband is the one who had the DUI and the device and he was in a car accident 4 weeks to the day before he was to complete the program and have the device removed. It was just an accident, it had nothing to do with alcohol, none was involved at all, just a car accident and thankfully he wasn't hurt. Not only did Intoxalock report the accident to PennDot (we live in Pa) as a "violation" which caused much grief and many phone calls to get it all straightened out but Intoxalock made the decision to "punish" my husband for the accident and keep the device in his car for an extra 2 months. My experience with Intoxalock was so bad not only with the horrible customer service but with all the misinformation that I had a direct contact person at PennDot to work directly with me to keep everything progressing properly. We all know that if we owed Intoxalock any money at all, they would've never closed out the account, let alone gave PennDot confirmation that my husband completed the program fully and successfully and paid all associated fees. So how can they come back 6 months later and say we owe money? And the crazy thing is, the $200 they say we still owe was a payment made on 5/12/2022 for the deductible for new equipment that they told us we had to buy due to the car accident. After being told that the equipment in the car could be salvaged and reused after the accident. Then you talk to another rep and was told "oh no that's not how it works you have to have all new equipment installed and even though you pay extra for the protection plan you still owe a deductible of $200" today when I called Intoxalock to get to the bottom of this mess, I was told that yes we did pay the $200 but Intoxalock didn't use that money for the equipment deductible, they let it ride as a credit on the account and we didn't make the final 2 monthly payments! But we DID make every single payment and we have proof of it! I was told by the rep to "trust me it'll all come out in the wash" so now I have to dispute the account with the collection company. Do yourself a huge favor and steer clear of Intoxalock. Horrible company, and from all the lawsuits I see being filed from multiple states, a shady and fraudulent one too!
Interlock device for DUI
Overall this experience with Intoxalock has been AWFUL! -10/10 I DO NOT recommend this company. It's extremely difficult to get a hold of an actual person. They want you to use the app they provide WHICH doesn't even allow you to request a work order for calibrations through it. You have to go to the actual site and request them. I live an hour away from where I work so to have my vehicle good to go is an NEED. Friday my box just decided to crap the bed & need to be replaced. Intoxalock said bc it wasn't my fault they'd pay for the tow to the shop & back to wherever I needed it. I had to call their roadside assistance & roadside proceeded to tell me it only covers 15 miles so I had to pay the extra 17 miles each way. They tow it to the service center which by the time it got there they were closed & didn't open again till Monday. I call Intoxalock back telling them this & they continue to tell me it will be done Saturday even though the SERVICE CENTER ISNT OPEN TILL MONDAY. So I call Saturday just to check & NO ONE IS THERE, shocker. Monday I call the garage (meanwhile again I live an hour away from work & work Friday - Wednesday) they never received the part & don't have backups. So here I am Tuesday still waiting on a new box & customer service won't transfer me to a supervisor when I've asked SEVERAL times. After being on hold for 36 minutes waiting for a supervisor to talk to because I've been crashing on coworkers couches or UBERING an hour and back to work. THIS IS OUT OF HAND to say the least.
They refuse to give me ANY paperwork on this situation showing what is going on so I can provide it to the courts.
I have heard horrible things about intoxalock before deciding it was ultimately the only option for me in order to keep my job. I've heard it messes up your car, new or not, I've heard of faulty equipment and hidden fees that are automatically taken out. As someone who has now had it for just over 3 months, I can tell you my experience has been so much worse than I have ever heard it from other people or from online reviews. Within the first 3 months of having intoxalock I have had 3 new systems installed because the first 2 were faulty. While trying to install the first system on my car the technician accidentally cut wires and fried my battery and it had to be taken to Nissan to get fixed before the intoxalock could be installed. Guess who was paying for it in the mean time without even having it installed, not to mention I had prepaid over $350 to have it installed. I was not able to work in the mean time. Less than a month later after the system was installed, it stopped working - when I'd turn my car off, the intoxalock system wouldn't register that my car had turned off. This would result in a random re blow that went missed. Got that one replaced with an entire new system, the shop said they weren't sure how it had lasted as long as it did because the equipment was bad. Within THREE DAYS of the second entirely new system being installed, the same exact problem started. I just had a third one installed after waiting a long time without a car for it to get into a shop and for new equipment to arrive from intoxalock. I had to do the same weekly payments as always even though I was unable to use my car due to no fault of my own. I'd upload the pictures of the auto repair places' receipts as proof that I've had 3 entirely new systems put in my car in the short span of 3 months but they have my personal info on them. They say that it is used to establish credibility and kept private but intoxalock has very much proved to me that they are beyond untrustworthy. The only reason I'm using the energy to write this review is for some small teeny hope that someone will see this and realize they are better off just not driving for the 2 yr period that they would've otherwise had to use an intoxalock system. I have had absolutely nothing but problems with intoxalock and their poor customer service people (it is not their fault) have no idea how to answer my questions other than getting my car into the closest shop days out. Words cannot describe how upset I am and how short I am into my 2 year lease with intoxalock. I have paid so much money even though my brand new car was not drivable half of this 3 month period due to faulty equipment. None of this was at any fault of the different repair shops I've taken it to, it was simply bad equipment from intoxalock that they installed. I am 100% dissatisfied with intoxalock in every way shape and form. They are taking advantage of vulnerable people who have no other choice if they'd like to be able to drive in order to keep their job or be able to pick up their children. I understand it is my fault I got a DWI, but I do not deserve to be taken advantage of and have my money taken from me when I can't even use my car due to faulty equipment. I have no idea what I could do to improve my situation other than end my lease and try to find a job I can walk to for the next 2 years. Im hoping someone will read this review and take it into consideration when trying to decide whether they should get intoxalock or just not be able to drive because there's no way the intoxalock company is going to give a dang about their bad reviews. I know there are many because I'm someone who extensively researches things I'm about to be spending lots of money on. It's not worth my energy to attach the photos of my proof of 3 different installations and continued weekly payments while my car is out of commission. I have no hope that they will try to improve anything in the future for any reason because they're making tons of money and hold the power to make or break people's ability to hold jobs and relationships with their children, especially in places like where I live where there is no option to take a bus or an Uber. The intoxalock company is taking advantage of people, even if we have made poor choices and mistakes to end up in the position where we need an ignition interlock device. It is not right and nothing will be done. I have no hope this 3rd system will last me any longer than the first 2 and I'm lucky there were no problems while installed the second 2 systems. I worry every time I turn my car off at work, gas station, or my house because there is a high chance the system will not come back on. I could go on and on - I apologize for how lengthy this review has gotten. I will end by restating that I am beyond dissatisfied in every way with intoxalock at only 3 months into my 2 year lease.
