If I could I'd leave negative stars. I live in a Rural area. When researching my internet options as I WFH HughesNet was the only one that kept populating as my only available service option. I chose their 200 mbps plan and the rep guaranteed this would be sufficient for me to be able to work. I consistently got less than 1 mbps DL never had upload and the latency was always 850ms and higher. I troubleshot my equipment to no resolve.
Due to the negative service I sought out better options from my local community and heard nothing but bad with HughesNet so I chose to follow there other recommendations vs hearing how HughesNet can fix it.
The day I called to cancel my service the representative was rude argumentative and not listening to anything I was saying. Ask me for my name 3 times. Ask why I was calling I said to cancel my service, they asked why I explained why, and he proceeded to try and educate me on VPN and why that's the source of my issues even though I repeatedly told him I couldn't connect my VPN due to the poor connection and that hindered me from being able to do my normal job functionalities. I told him troubleshooting VPN is not why I called in which he argued back that it was. I told him to go back to the recording and try that statement again. He proceed to argue with me for 30 minutes before finally canceling my service. I asked for a Supervisor or someone above him (Jesse Grey, he claims is his name) and he said he was in charge I told him I wanted someone else above him and he then stated he never said he was the supervisor and refused to transfer me.
After my frustrations overpowered into seething anger a cuss word slipped and he finally cancelled the service.
I told him I have picture proof of inadequate service across different devices of types and brand.
Why train your people to argue with customers. How disrespectful.
Internet (Satellite Dish, Radio, and modem)
Run far and fast from Hughes Net, it's the worst internet on planet earth! If you can actually get something to load, it continuously buffers until…"Oops, something went wrong, check your internet connection". My small critter cam froze anywhere from 15-30 seconds out of a minute, so I missed a lot of activity from my domesticated wildlife, which eat out of my hand and occasionally come in for a brief visit. Luckily I have unlimited data on my phone because, you guessed it, couldn't use my phone either! When contacting customer service, I was told numerous times that they understood my concern, and did I wanna purchase more tokens. I just wanted what I was paying for, which was working internet, and for almost 2 years I NEVER GOT IT. They drafted $164.20 off my credit card every month though and every month they drafted it a day earlier. By the time I finally disconnected, my draft date went from the 16th of each month to the 1st of each month. I questioned that and the response was that my bill was computer generated—WTF? I never got my $100 rebate and was charged 4 different times for the final bill, luckily my CHASE credit card disputed charges immediately (thank you CHASE)! I gave them an address to send a box to return their equipment and all they did was send the box to my old address and sent me a bogus text from USPS telling me there was a problem delivering, resend address along with cc information (which looked very legitimate). Why would the USPS text me on a Sunday, and how would they have my"phone number"? I was smart enough to check with the local post office and guess what…BOGUS! I am filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau as well. HUGHES NET NEEDS TO BE STOPPED!
I been with hughesnet since 2017 to 2022 and there is NOTHING TRUE about their high speed internet claim TV commercials. ( I live in area that does not have cable internet service which in my opinion is the best internet) ( before hughsnet ( 2017) I had ATT hotspot 3G and then 4G and again I was limited to what I could use for the month before they slowed down my service)
1st hughesnet over sold their capabilities leaving you with only 200 kilobytes plus or minus service after 4pm central due to their system is overloaded ( to many people on line).
2nd with what service you do get from hughesnt they only allow you just a handful real time on line and then they slow your service down more and God help you if you go over then they want to extort you for additional service fee ( as if the 90 bucks plus a month I pay isn't enough already).
3rd don't count on watching videos like youtube on hughesnet unless you like watching circles going around on screen and if you do it eats up even more of your handful of time allotment for the month leaving you without any internet unless you like paying hughsnet extortion ( I rebuild houses and I use youtube for "how to" info)
IN ALL FAIRNESS hughesnet does try to help you out with the non stop complaining I did but in reality they know they over sold their ability to provide you " high speed internet " which even if they didn't over sell their internet service, the speed that they do boast about on their TV commercials does not work due to the time you click on what you want takes for ever to reach the satellite in space they own and then back down to you on earth. " Example the cell service I got now for internet, hot spot for my desk top, provides the same speeds as hughesnet but the difference is my clicks on line are instant connect where as with hughesnet I would become eligible for social security while I waited for hughesnet to connect while sitting and watching circles go round on the computer screen."
CANCEL your auto pay debit card, HUGHESNET is send me emails telling me they were unable to collect for a new month service after I ended monthly service.
Be very careful of this companies' claims.
I had standard Verizon DSL service with very few other options in my rural neighborhood. My daughter was beginning to take college classes on line while also teaching violin on line so I wanted to see I could improve our system download/upload speeds. I communicated all this information to HughesNet upfront.
Based upon HughesNet claims it seemed possible for me to improve my speeds by 5 to 10X. Verizon held a steady 3 to 3.5 Mbps and HughesNet offered 25 Mbps and their price had dropped in line with other providers so I felt like I should give them a shot, even though many reviews were saying otherwise about their performance.
Unfortunately the negative reviews I read were correct. My service was installed, failed miserably that same day of installation. I called HughesNet who tried to reset some technical things over the phone and retest my system - still no improvement. They sent out a technician to replace the radio transmitter to attempt to improve the service. Technician said the over the phone technical people at HughesNet have no idea what they are talking about and he decided not to replace my radio transmitter. He did some tests and thought everything looked fine, but later the same day the service failed.
I called to cancel the service never even having used it. HughesNet customer service made me feel like they were doing me a favor by allowing me to cancel their awful service. They said they would send me a pre-paid UPS shipping box and that I was to return to them their equipment (router, power cord and radio transmitter on the satellite dish) or I would be charged $400 as an early termination fee. I had to get my son to climb up on our 2nd story roof to cut the radio transmitter from the satellite dish because they would not be sending anyone out to retrieve their equipment. The satellite dish is still attached to my roof.
My service was successfully terminated, but they would not reimburse me for the $99 install fee, and they charged me $37.10 for 12 days of usage (starting from my account start date until my cancellation call & approval date). I never even used their service during those 12 days, because thankfully I had kept my Verizon DSL service going during the transition period, just in case something went wrong - glad I did! The 12 days of service I ended up paying for was the time it took HughesNet to diagnose the problem, resend a technician, multiple lengthy phone calls, etc. all while I could never use their pathetic service.
I would never recommend this company for anything - sales, service, product or customer relations. This is not a righteous company and its eventual collapse is certain.

Hughesnet is not by any means the worst corporate villain out there, and their products will not kill you like cigarettes, known and deadly automotive defects and medical devices with documented (and lethal) side effects, to name a few, but if you have any other alternative for internet service then by all means buy that rather than getting Hughesnet Gen 5 internet satellite.
Like their dishonest, disreputable and more deadly corporate cousins, Hughesnet places profit and share price ahead of morality, honest and simple human decency, although as indicated their satellite internet will not kill you (unless you kill yourself because Netflix streaming is so unwatchable that you throw yourself off of a cliff).
The basic fact that potential customers need to realize is that the advertised speeds do not match the quality of what you realize on your TV. Not even close you might get a speed test result of 25 MBPS on testmynet.com, but the quality of the viewing is as the Netflix speed test indicates, which is consistently around 0.5 MBPS. And there is nothing they can do apparently to fix that. It must have to do with the way satellite internet works at this point in time.
Cover up is then the name of the game here when you discover that the service does not work for streaming as they advertise, and nothing they do can fix the problem, as happened to me and many others judging by the very poor reviews Never admit anything is the strategy deny, deny, deny.
So what that I was able to achieve decent internet streaming when I finally managed to get DSL service installed so far away from the DSL node that only 2 MBPS was possible? So what that the Netflix speed test showed 0.5 MBPS with Hughesnet when theirs showed 21 and the picture was so scrambled that I didn't know if I was watching Star Wars or 60 Minutes other than for the sound? So what that an experienced LG TV tech who came out and checked out the TV explained that in his experience you could just not use satellite internet for streaming?
All of that was just fluff and not our problem type stuff when I finally cancelled Hughesnet. And by God were they ever going to stick it to me with a $300 early cancellation fee and a $600 early equipment return fee because this was all as advertised and above board, and strictly, somehow, my problem.
Except that it is not, and it seems that continuous real time streaming is simply not possible with current satellite technology. And, given the number of 1 star reviews I have read that say exactly the same thing in different review forums, they have to know this and simply don't care. If they can sell the service with glib promos and slick sales pitches they will, and when a customer says enough is enough Hughesnet will take as much as they possibly can monetarily to pad their bottom line and try to make it your problem.
I owned my own business (I'm a veterinarian) for many years and we almost always tried to make it right when people were unhappy, even when we had clearly practiced very good medicine and surgery. Simply to help, because that was the right thing to do. Unfortunately, many businesses, and especially large corporations, do not follow this moral compass. Because quarterly profit is all that counts, fair play and basic honesty be damned.
If you do have to get satellite internet because there are no other options, and want to watch movies, it is possible to download Netflix and Amazon movies with either an app or a third party program to your Mac or PC, and then use screen sharing if your computer and TV support that. That is not ideal, but at least you get a watchable TV program or movie on your nice big Smart TV.
It would be really uplifting if for once a corporation like Hughesnet looked at all of this negative stuff and the unhappiness it causes, came clean, and apologized without being forced to by some sort of glaring media exposure. Based on their responses to my Better Business Bureau complaint, that is not going to happen with Hughesnet. But if I can save even one other person the aggravation of having to deal with them, then to inform good people to stay away will at least have been worth it.
DO NOT SIGN A CONTRACT WITH HUGHES NET. - read to the end, please!
I am writing this review to dissuade anyone thinking about getting Hughes Net. Do not listen to anyone who has had a " good experience" with Hughes Net. I made that mistake and now I feel as if Hughes Net has stolen money from me.
At first everyone, you talk to at the sales department is really friendly and they promise that you will have no issues accessing the internet. They say if you ever have any issues they will come out and help you get it straightened out. They say that if you get the higher data plan you will be fine with streaming and gaming. They make a lot of promises and it is 100% a scam.
The first WEEK we had Hughes Net it stopped working. I couldn't load Pinterest or Netflix or anything. I called into customer service and they said it was because there were clouds in Arizona and it was blocking the Satellite dish... I asked her if there were any clouds ever if that was going to keep me from using the internet because they didn't go over this on our sales talk. She said she would look into it. I hung up and got charged $1.00 for my call to customer service. Still no internet.
After that it was spotty. We could load Facebook or our online bills for about 10 min a day. Nothing more. After months of paying $85.00 and not having internet, I finally called customer service again. The first guy told me to monitor when we didn't have internet. I just monitored when we did. I was charged another $1.00 for the call. I called in again and said we are still not having any luck being able to access the internet. All they told me was that it looked fine from their end. When I asked why I didn't have internet if everything looked fine they gave me some dumb response to beat around the bush and get me off the phone. I was constantly tossed from one rep to another being told my internet was fine even though I couldn't load the Hughes net website. I was charged $1.00 for every call. I froze my account. At some point, I got on the phone AGAIN and got a sales rep. He said I shouldn't be having any of the issues I was having and that customer service should have sent out a technician to help me. I got transferred back to customer service and they said they would have to troubleshoot first. Where was the offer to troubleshoot months ago? They looked up my account and said that because it was on hold they wouldn't be able to troubleshoot for 72 hours. Such a joke. When I told them I was done with the crappy customer service and wanted to cancel they all of a sudden were able to troubleshoot. I just told them to put it back on hold and hung up. And yes, I was charged another $1.00 for the call. I called my bank and canceled the card I had on file with them.
In order to cancel your contract with Hughes Net, you are charged a $400.00 termination fee. I was not going to pay that for something I was never given or never worked in the first place. They sent me a box to send back their equipment. That box was the nicest thing Hughes Net ever did for me. I am now facing collections for not paying the early termination fee. Okay, I get that from not paying but IT NEVER WORKED. And you want to steal more of my money? You already got $85.00 a month and didn't even give me internet in return.
Honestly, Our Verizon hot spot and jetpack were they only way i was able to get internet where I live. Now and when we had Hughes Net.
Please do not get Hughes Net. It says in their contract that they don't warranty anything. The service is the worst I've ever experienced. They charge $195 to send someone out to look at your equipment. Their contract also says that they don't guarantee that the internet with actually give you the speeds and data they offer. I thought, " it can't be that bad," but it was. Get Dish Network or Direct TV or get a good data plan on your phone with access to a hot spot. If you really want to go for Hughes Net after this then at least read the terms and conditions VERY carefully and realize you won't get help from anyone at Hughes Net for any issues you face.
