We have been with Home Chef for a little over 3 months. A little surprised at the negative comments. Aside from one incomplete order which they immediately refunded have been very satisfied with the quality and customer service. Also delivery has always been on day we designated. We've enjoyed trying meals we otherwise wouldn't have made ourselves. My only "complaint" is noticing that trend seems to be toward more expensive meals. Like to stick to the $8.99 options.
I had a total of 9 meal kits delivered and I'm done wasting money. I used all kits within one week of delivery and I've had several problems from missing products, expired products (sour cream, naan bread), bad produce (either vinegar smell from being expired or soggy potato's), and on 2 occasions liquid from a product leaked out and covered all the other ingredients (both times were from bagged veggies). Not to mention, everything is covered in plastic! It made me feel like such a wasteful person pulling green onions or carrots out of a plastic bag. Just buy fresh ingredients from the store cause their produce is far from fresh.
I've been using HC for years. Over 380 meals on my account. I finally canceled my subscription today due to yet ANOTHER week of missing food. Every single week it seems I'm missing either the meat or the meal kit of one meal. Customer service is very friendly and always refunds me for the meal, but I'm sick of having to call them. I use a meal delivery service for a REASON...so I don't have to plan my dinners. So it's incredibly annoying to have a missing dinner almost every week. I really hate to cancel as I love the food, and the selection is one of the best I've seen, but in the last few months, their quality control has been garbage.
When people sign up for these type of services you expect at least reliability meaning you will get the food on time. That's why I don't buy groceries, I expect the box. This is the second service I go thru and maybe the last, where the boxes don't arrive! I'm sick and tired of the COVID excuse too. If they can't de; over on time or at least let their customers know in advanced so they can get groceries, then do someth9ng else!
I got the " your box is late" for the third time, and it never got here. I suspended my account, waiting for my refund. Food is great, but again with an unreliable service, who cares how good the food taste..
Tip for consumers:
Don’t bother, you might get a box, you might not....and you’ll get the COVID excuse every time.

I used HomeChef for 6 months or so and we got bored with the menus and "suspended" our subscription. We had a credit when we suspended and that credit was about to expire so we restarted our subscriptions. The first delivery was a day late upsetting the schedule for the entire week and it had cherry tomatoes in it. Many of them were crushed.
The next week I got a notice saying our delivery was on its way. I couldn't remember order anything, but thought maybe my wife did. The order came. It was just a bunch of fish, We didn't order fish. HomeChef has MEALS. I don't know how we got this and they never reply when I try to find out.
Every time I start creating an email in the app it wipes out my email and takes me to the FAQ for questions on how to change your schedule.
I don't need the FAQ. I need my money back and all this fish taken back.
All in all I am EXTREMELY unhappy with my restart of HomeChef. I have asked them to deactivate my account (not suspend. Take me off your customer list) to no avail.
I have the right to control this but HomeChef thinks otherwise.
I hope this gets their attention. Cross fingers.
We thought we would try Home Chef as a change from Hello Fresh. The first week was great. Our box showed up on time (late and delayed deliveries were an issue with Hello Fresh), and we were inpressed with the packaging and freshness of the produce. My wife also liked the fact that the meals seemed less timely to prepare. But after being with them for the past 3 months, tonight our box was delayed for the 3rd time in 4 weeks.
You use a meal service like this to help simplify your evening meal planning. But when you're counting on it to be there, and they don't show up, it's no longer a convenience. It's a burden. It leaves you scrambling trying to puit something together, which adds to the stress of the day. And we're paying for this aggravation!
So we have made the decision to go back to Hello Fresh. There are a couple of other reasons for that decision though. The meals from Hello Fresh may take a longer to prepare, but it is worth it! The favor profiles at Hello Fresh are much better, plus the portions are little larger. There has been more than one night that I was still hunger; that didn't happen with Hello Fresh. Also, when our box was delayed tonight, I thought I would give them a call to see if we were going to be getting it. Guess what? They have no after hours phone support! Hello Fresh does. All in all, they both have a few issues but Hello Fresh is is better the Home Chef by a fairly wide margin.
So with all of that being said, it's good bye to Home Chef and Hello to Hello Fresh again.
The recipes were often really good, however, out of the three boxes we received two were missing very important ingredients. The best response we got was a $5 credit onto our next box, what a joke. They ruin a $20 meal and respond by making you buy another box at almost full price...
I ordered one delivery (2 menus) at a discount to try it once. The actual delivery was as promised and arrived very cold, on time. But it's too expensive in my book, and they charge your credit card about 5 days before you receive the food. I liked the food but it only comes in servings of 3 so with a family of 4 I wanted to cancel. Their website is a "train wreck". It doesn't offer you a log in on the home page. I had to search the web for advice from other customers about how to log in. When I managed that, the first headline said "sorry, we don't deliver to that zip code." Allegedly, you cannot cancel, you just "pause service." The calendar delivery tab does not offer a PAUSE service button. I was on hold for 11 minutes twice, finally was allowed to leave a "non-urgent" message that cut me off after maybe 15 seconds. I am considering paying my bank $30 to stop payment because I am getting food that I was not allowed to select and doesn't fit our dietary needs.
Well, Ive been with HomeChef for about 6 months or so now. I love the recipes, and I can tell that they use quality ingredients, however, I consistently receive meat that has browned, rotted, or leaked, and vegetables that have gone bad. Every time I notify them, they do give a $10 credit (on a $20 meal), however, its just happening too often, and Im afraid Im going to have to discontinue the service. A loss for me, because I really enjoy the menu and the concept along with the convenience of their service. I will try again in a year, after theyve been in business a bit longer and hopefully improve before they lose too many customers / revenues.
I tried this service once and was not happy to see that my box arrived leaking some kind of fluid. I let it go and cooked the food, which was tasty enough. Following this, I had a mix up with my account and was sent a delivery the day before Thanksgiving while I was out of town. While I should have been more careful to make sure that I didn't get this delivery, there was a complication with my account which explained why this happened. When I reached out to them about it, they couldn't see my side of the issue at all and simply referred to it as "user error." A smart business would try to keep me as a happy customer for future profits, but this company doesn't operate this way. My experience with Blue Apron has been much more positive and I will stick with them.
I either have missing produce or potatoes that are black inside, zucchini and beans that are frozen and even a bruised and moldy tomato.
Small portions, really weird favor profiles, just overall not good. Oh, and the ingredients were pretty low par. Such a bummer.
To begin with: it looks like a good idea, they do the shopping for you.....all you do is cook. The reality is: you give them your credit card number in good faith and they "accidentally" charge you over and over and over. I've had to dispute 5 charges so far, and the kicker is......I haven't even placed an order yet. They caused me to get an overdraft charge and there customer service people stink SO bad all they did was apologize......$35 charge from my bank and all I got was a "sorry." SAVE YOURSELVES THESE HEADACHES PEOPLE!! DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR CREDIT CARD INFO! Even after my account was "canceled" I got TWO more charges for $19.70 each!!!
I thought having meal selections at my fingertips would make life easier when I returned home from work. No shopping - ah, wonderful! I took a look at the site and was given the impression I could choose the meals. I expected I would be able to look at what the offerings are. Before they allow you to choose your meals, i. E., see what you are buying, you have to select the number of people and then PAY. WHAT? I can think of no other place on the web where you have to pay before you see what you are paying for. I did not complete the registration because of this. After reading some of the reviews, I'm so glad I didn't.
This is only an opinion since I have never ordered from HomeChef before.
I have a fridge full of condiments that don't expire for a long time that I will use over and over again for the next meal.
With HomeChef it doesn't seem like there will be any left overs for the next day.
I spend around $10.00 per meal and usually have left overs for two for lunchtime the next day.
For instance if I buy a tri-tip for $20.00 it usually feeds my husband and I for 3 meals. That's only 6.66 per meal. The remaining $4.00 from the $10.00 buys sides to complete the meal.
Therefore it seems like it would cost me more monthly if I used HomeChef service. Not to mention I would also have to pay their delivery charge.
My household income is $150,000, not a bad income, so I feel that I could afford this program if I ever needed from a convenience standpoint but I don't feel it offers enough value.
I probably haven't crossed all my t's and i's writing this but this is just my opinion...
Marle
When you try to make suggestions to customer service about the meat sitting on the bottom of the box, then vegetables and ice on top of the box it doesn't make sense and they don't listen. Their containers with liquid leakand so does the meat.
Our weekly deliveries of fresh, perfectly-portioned ingredients have everything you need to prepare home-cooked meals in about 30 minutes.
