Finally a free tax site that is legitimate! I found no hidden fees or expenses! I do a simple return and this site is perfect for me! They do offer other products for tax returns a bit tricky but their prices were a so reasonable compared to other sites that offer that type of products. The first year I didn't have state taxes so it was completely FREE to file! I now live in a state that I do pay taxes, and exactly as they promised 14.99 no more! Awesome job 👏

“Absolute Scam”

Matt L.

They've somehow decided to send cashiers checks instead of direct deposit, through some 3rd party, although I set my refund for DD (and all of my banking info is correct). A $30 "check reissuance fee" has been taken from my refunds, on top of $40+ they've already taken--and of course I haven't received my refunds although they were posted on 2/22. Absolute scam, this is criminal.

Came across review in Kiplinger on free tax software and FreeTaxUSA appealed to me. I used it for last year (2020) filing and the process worked very well for me. I have several sources of retirement income and numerous streams of investment income, so the input was a little tedious but about the same as H&R Block. I will most likely use this again for 2021. The price is right... FREE.

We are a typical retired couple. Our taxes include social security, W2 income, stock sales, mutual funds, home interest payments, etc... nothing overly complicated. I used TaxAct/TurboTax for over 20 years and was not dissatisfied, but they kept increasing their charges, so I looked for another provider. Let's just say that I am glad I did! I uploaded my prior year taxes (pdf file) and everything came across without error! I found the web interface to be easier to use than TaxAct and I was not charged extra for having investments. Assuming everything comes back with IRS approval, I will be back again next year. Great product!

I've used FreeTaxUSA several times to do my taxes, and have always been quite satisfied with the results. The interface is pretty straightforward and easy to navigate. And even if you decide not to pay the $15 to file your state taxes, the program still tells you the amount you owe the state or vice versa.

Overall, I find the experience simple and effective, and would recommend this site to others.

I sent a message to FreeTaxUSA's support, and they replied back saying my prior year's AGI can be entered after I entered my payment information and ordered my tax returns. I was a bit skeptical but followed their instructions, and it allowed me to enter my prior year AGI on literally the final step before it was filed. It would be a lot better for my peace of mind if I was allowed to enter my prior year AGI prior to ordering and paying.

Does not allow me to enter last year's AGI manually

In 2020, I filed my taxes with TurboTax. I wanted to switch to FreeTaxUSA for the 2021 tax year. However, there is no way for me to manually modify my 2020 AGI from the default which is 0. The FAQ isn't helpful at all, it only tells you how to find last year's AGI if you didn't file with FreeTaxUSA last year but it doesn't ever say how to enter it on FreeTaxUSA. I know my tax return will be rejected if I don't enter the correct 2020 AGI. It seems the only way to have a non-zero value for last year's AGI is if you did your taxes with them last year. That makes it literally impossible to switch from another tax preparer to this one.

I went through the whole process this year with both TurboTax and FreeTaxUSA to see the difference. Turbo tax is easier to understand for the most part, and found me about $60 more to deduct, but since I'm self employeed and operate in several different states the tax prep fee was almost $300. FreeTaxUSA takes a bit of careful reading, but ended up at almost the same result and the tax prep fee was around $50, even with the add-on for amendments just in case. Worth it for me. If I get audited or something I'll update this, but right now this seems like a good deal.

This is the second year I have used this service, which overall is a great site. I realized this year that there is a glitch in the way maine state tax is calculated, the program uses the tax tables instead of using the tax rate calculation like other sites do. Not alot of money but a couple dollars is a couple dollars. Now if your close to the top of the 100. Tax table bracket you make out and pay less.

Hi Wanda, we guarantee our Maine calculations and would be happy to look into this for you. Can you private message us your email address?

I have been using FreeTaxUSA for 7 years. Always have been happy with their service. Until 2017 -- now I cannot pay the $23 for the services (filing 2 state returns).
I get
"Authorization was declined. Please verify your payment information or use a different credit card or bank account."
Error, even though the info is correct. I try a different card. Same result.
My girlfriend is doing her taxes, and hit the same issue. Tried several of her credit and debit cards, no luck. The only option is to have the fee deducted from tax return, FOR EXTRA $20 going to their pocket. Are they serious?!
No thank you, going to file with a different provider instead.
Utter frustration.

EDIT: I contacted the FreeTaxUSA folks through their "Support" section and got a fast response, even though it was weekend. It turns out the payment was failing because I was trying to pay from outside the US (traveling in Europe at the moment). The decline would not have been so surprising and frustrating if the error message was actually saying the reason "You cannot submit payment from this country", preferably at the beginning of the process. Once I figured out that this was indeed the problem, I was able to submit the payment -- if you are in this situation you want to spoof your geolocation, e.g. by using something like tor-browser, or ask someone in the US to submit the payment for you.
Changing to 4 stars, as the only issue really is misleading error message.

Used it for the first time to file my sole member llc. Seemed pretty simple and straight forward. I e-filed my federal and state taxes, however, I incorrectly entered my date of birth. It immediately got rejected for e-file. I got an email from FreeTaxUSA to try again. I fixed the issue and it went smoothly. I liked it. The only reason I wouldn't give it 5 stars is that, it was a bit confusing when filing for my llc. I like this business though and will definitely be using FreeTaxUSA in the future.

No problems using the program. Does not give you a lot of unnecessary tedious questions and headaches like TurboTax does.
But, According to the North Carolina Department of Revenue website it is free to file the state return with FreeTaxUSA. This was so when I did a family member's return but on mine it charged $14.99. Something is wrong with that.

Free Tax USA is great. I believe I've been using this for approx 10 years for myself as well as filing it for six other family members. I just helped my daughter with hers & I was so amazed that both State & Federal were accepted within 30 minutes. That was the 1st time ever that acceptance was received that quickly. Hers was not a simple situation, with many dependents as well deductions. Also within a week both State & Federal refunds were deposited. It is 14.95 or so for the state only. One still needs to learn about the process a bit & not just depend on the website to walk you through it. I have never used the deluxe edition which is only $5.95... that's a great price for those who don't have much experience with filing their own taxes.

"Hi John, the sale of business assets are reported on the IRS Form 4797. If you are using our software, you’ll select ‘Income’ on the menu bar, ‘Business Income’ on the drop-down menu, then follow the prompts from there.

The IRS website gives some good guidance:

“The sale of a business usually is not a sale of one asset. Instead, all the assets of the business are sold. Generally, when this occurs, each asset is treated as being sold separately for determining the treatment of gain or loss. When sold, these assets must be classified as capital assets, depreciable property used in the business, real property used in the business, or property held for sale to customers, such as inventory or stock in trade.” https://www.irs.gov/Businesses/Small-Businesses-&-Self-Employed/Sale-of-a-Business

I have used them for the past 4 years. I used to be a dedicated h&r blocker, but they charged more for the same service. Mind you, i have not ever needed customer service for any of them, but i have NEVER had a problem filing or getting a very timely return.
My only complaint would be that sometimes when they tell you to fix a problem, you dont know exactly what needs to be fixed.
They import my information from year to year and for me, thats the best part! Easy!

I have used this site to do all my
Family for 5 years but this year they would charge me sometimes twice for one return.

Thumbnail of user sams185
Sam S. – FreeTaxUSA Rep

Hi Virginia, whenever a payment is submitted, the charge is automatically pre-authorized by the credit card company. This charge shows up as a "pending" charge on your bank account. If the credit card company ends up declining your payment for some reason, then that charge will not be fully processed and the pending charge will go away within a few business days. It is possible to have a charge rejected and then retry and have it accepted which could look like a duplicate charge for a few days. If you still have an extra charge showing on your statement, please contact our customer support and we will be happy to remove it. support@freetaxusa.com
