Finally a free tax site that is legitimate! I found no hidden fees or expenses! I do a simple return and this site is perfect for me! They do offer other products for tax returns a bit tricky but their prices were a so reasonable compared to other sites that offer that type of products. The first year I didn't have state taxes so it was completely FREE to file! I now live in a state that I do pay taxes, and exactly as they promised 14.99 no more! Awesome job 👏

“Absolute Scam”

They've somehow decided to send cashiers checks instead of direct deposit, through some 3rd party, although I set my refund for DD (and all of my banking info is correct). A $30 "check reissuance fee" has been taken from my refunds, on top of $40+ they've already taken--and of course I haven't received my refunds although they were posted on 2/22. Absolute scam, this is criminal.

This is the second year I used this site. Last year worked ok, but this year it will not let me show that my Schedule C net is not subject to Self-Employment tax. I am a notary, and that income is exempt from SE tax. Also, it computed deprecation on my car incorrectly. I am a retired tax professional, so I don't need tax help, but you can't even get hold of them regarding technical problems with their website.

Hi Scilla! I am so sorry for the frustration that you are experiencing with our site. We do have a way for our software to exempt notary income from SE tax. I am also very sorry that you are having trouble getting a response from our support team. I would like to personally look into this and see what has been happening. Could you please send us a private message with your email address (the one on your account) so I can get this figured out?

The live chat explains how to tap menu for income to find easy attach info. It works once. But if you need to take a break. And go back to that method the tap menu income no longer contains attach 1099 MRC on it. This is no matter how many times you try this. Very annoying. And your e return will not go in without these attachments even tho your credit card has already been billed as if! More than annoying. Maybe no longer free Turbo has sent them a virus so you go to thinking Maybe you get what you pay for?

The return was free and all, but then when I needed help they were not helpful at all. All I got was "did you call the irs?" "Sorry we don't know" it's been 90 days and I'm about to be evicted in a couple weeks, with no answers. The IRS said they don't have the return but FreeTaxUSA they can't do anything even tho they are the only ones who say the IRS has the return. I haven't had problems in the past but they didn't have some helpful amazing customer service like they advertise.

Hi TC. We are glad to hear you enjoyed the software and preparation process. We do our best to assist customers with their questions regarding the software and their account. Once the IRS system has accepted a return, they do not provide any updates to us regarding the refund status. A very common issue this year is the IRS taking much longer to process refunds for many returns. We are very sorry about the delay with the IRS issuing your refund. Please continue to check the status of your refund using the IRS Where's My Refund tool: https://www.irs.gov/refunds Please be sure to verify the information being entered matches exactly with your return.

I have used FreeTaxUSA for over 6 years now and have been very happy. When I finished my tax return for 2022, I noticed that NYS had instituted a real Property Tax Relief credit which the 2022 software allowed me to take. Upon reviewing my 2021 NYS Tax Return, I didn't see the credit. After going back and redoing my return using FreeTaxUSA software for 2021, I noticed that the questions that the software asked were not worded properly and led to not getting the credit. I then went and used the 2021 Taxact software and got the proper credit. I now have to file an amended return to get my credit of $269.00. Shame on you FreeTaxUSA.

Verified purchase

For several years in a row, I have used FreeTax and my wife has used TurboTax, and we don't quit until we come up with the same number. The interesting part is when we sit down and try to figure out our differences. Based on this I can say with certainty that FreeTaxUSA is better (and cheaper).

Having said that, FreeTaxUSA has some issues that I find almost unbelievable. Things like having to enter information from a single K-1 up to three times. And far too many times, if you don't click the little question mark to get more information about something, you'll enter a wrong value. Taking an example from the Colorado deductions page, this sounds very clear: "Enter your total charitable contributions made during 2021:". But it's not. If you clicked the question mark, you'd find out that they really meant "Enter your total charitable contributions made during 2021 AND NOT ALREADY DEDUCTED ON THE FEDERAL FORM:".

Tip for consumers:
Make a habit of clicking the question marks for more information; a lot of times the info there is critical to getting your taxes right.

Hi Allan, I'm really sorry! Unfortunately, the IRS and states will no longer accept prior year returns through e-file, so the only way to file your prior year return is with paper forms. We appreciate your remarks and will use them as we look for ways to make the software better for our customers. We will contact you directly to find a resolution.

Hi Brandy, I understand your concern and the frustration in waiting for your refund to be sent to you. Unfortunately, since your tax refund comes directly from the IRS, FreeTaxUSA has no control over how long it takes the IRS to send your refund. Once a tax return has been accepted, we do not receive any further information from the IRS regarding your tax return or tax refund.

However, a common complaint this year is that the IRS is processing and sending refunds slower than normal. I recommend that you continue to track the status of your refund, please go to the IRS website (www.irs.gov) and click on the "Get Your Refund Status" link. You can also call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 or 1-800-829-1954.

If you have any further questions, please email us from inside your account by clicking, "Contact Support."

Just like many others my taxes were rejected so my taxes could not be completed on time. Now I have to pay a real CPA to fix what ever is going on and they are giving me the run around A rejection means they did not do their job, this should trigger and auto refund. I will be contacting my Bank and I already contacted the BBB. I thought it was a simple mistake on their end but I am believing what others are posting this company is a scam. If I receive my refund I will update this. UPDATED: I did receive a full refund.

Sam S. – FreeTaxUSA Rep

Hi C D, I’m sorry to hear that your return was rejected. The IRS system has various checks in place to make sure your return is filed correctly, so if your return was rejected, it means that something on the return might be incorrect. We do have a support team that can help troubleshoot your rejection, but if you decided to file your return elsewhere, we would be happy to issue a refund. Can you please sign in to your account and click the “Contact Support” link?

When do people typically receive their federal tax return when they've chosen direct deposit? It's not even that much only like $100, why does it take so damn long?

Thumbnail of user sams185
Sam S. – FreeTaxUSA Rep

Hi Syrena, the IRS has said they expect to issue most refunds in less than 21 calendar days. The exact timing can vary with different tax situations and from year to year as the IRS makes changes in their processing system. The IRS works hard to process your tax return as fast as possible. Once your tax refund has been approved, direct deposit will help you get your refund in the quickest way possible.

I just filed my 2012 return with FreeTaxUSA and was just informed that i cannot efile 2012 tax return. Also i was just informed that i will get no refund. Was i charged the $12.95 for nothing? The irs is holding my 2015 refund due to not filing for 2012. As this is an urgent situation, any information will be appreciated.

Thumbnail of user sams185
Sam S. – FreeTaxUSA Rep

Hi Sam, the IRS only accepts e-filed returns for the current tax year, prior year returns must be printed and mailed. Any tax refunds need to be claimed within 3 years of the return due date, so if you just filed your 2012 tax return you wouldn’t qualify for a refund for that year. It can still be worth filing a prior year return because the IRS may withhold your current year tax refund if there are any prior year returns that are past due. The IRS has some good information about prior year tax returns here: https://www.irs.gov/Businesses/Small-Businesses-&-Self-Employed/Filing-Past-Due-Tax-Returns

I filed taxes in February and I am still waiting on my Federal return, still in processing status. It has been a month, don't understand the issue, they accepted and now I am still waiting.

Thumbnail of user sams185
Sam S. – FreeTaxUSA Rep

Hi Debbie, sorry to hear you’re still waiting on your Federal return. Once the IRS has accepted your tax return the rest of the process is in their control, including the timing. The IRS will have the most up-to-date information on the status of your tax return. After 21 days, you can call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 and one of their representatives will be able to research the status of your tax return.

No state tax in Florida so FREE since 2016. Their services are underpriced. Today, however, the preferred lender (incentives for me) of the developer building our next house demanded W2, s for 2018 & 2017. 2018 resolved. 2017 seems hopeless. Tried various solutions from their site & Google. This includes looking for headings I'm supposed to find on their site that aren't there. Others found that do not provide promised results. Found 2017 tax returns, provided me 2018 W2, s. Attempts of contacting their "customer service" just walked me back to their site to figure it out on my frustrated own. Really arrogant of them. A "it's not me it's you" additude on their part. I've wasted time on this today that I didn't have to spare. So beware, if you ever need them they will not be there for you!
I now know that but right now I fully accept that I'll almost certainly use them this next tax year w/ great hope I won't be in an uncharted situation again. I do hate WalMart but I'm still in there on occasion? I do hope they appreciate the zing I intend by aligning them w/WM. But as FTUSA is free then it's true that I'm paying less for the customer service t I don't get from them than that that I don't get at WM. So I'll be back next year.

Thumbnail of user sams185
Sam S. – FreeTaxUSA Rep

Hi Robert, that’s perfectly normal. Your tax return will go through various phases. When the IRS receives your tax return and if everything looks okay, they will accept your tax return. They will then process your tax return, most are processed in less than 21 days after being accepted. Once your tax return has been processed, if you are receiving a tax refund your status will change to “Refund Approved” followed by “Refund Sent”. The most up-to-date information about your tax refund will be available from the IRS Where’s My Refund? Tool. If you have any other questions, please send an email to support@freetaxusa.com and a member of our customer support team will be happy to assist you.

Hi Tina, sorry to hear you’re still waiting. The timing of tax refunds is controlled by the IRS. If it’s been over 21 days since the IRS has accepted your tax return, you can call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 and have one of their representatives research the status of your tax return. They have representatives available from 7am-7pm your local time.

I was looking forward to using the site, but was blocked from proceeding when I hit the SSN for my spouse screen. Without a number, the software will not let me proceed.

As a non resident alien with no US income or assets, who has never been to the US and has no plans to in future, my spouse has no SSN or ITIN and is not required to have one.
Other tax preparation sites don't have this glitch.

Thumbnail of user sams185
Sam S. – FreeTaxUSA Rep

Hi Mark, thanks for writing. At this time our software requires that you have an ITIN or SSN for every person that you have on your return. This includes you, your spouse, and any dependents.

Currently, the IRS requires that you have an SSN or ITIN for your spouse if you wish to file married joint or married separate. On the instructions for Federal Form 1040, it says, "If your spouse is a nonresident alien, he or she must have either an SSN or an ITIN if:
You file a joint return,
You file a separate return and claim an exemption for your spouse, or
Your spouse is filing a separate return."

Since we are required to follow these instructions, the software will require an SSN or ITIN for your spouse.

I have happily used freetaxusa for the last three years and have even referred five people to use it. I have never had a problem until filing this year. I filed my returns on the last day (no one's fault but mine). I prepared my federal and state returns and thought that I was getting ready to file them BOTH. I paid $12.95 for the State; the federal was free. I hit the submit button to only find out that only my federal was e-filed. I tried to go back and e-file my State return but was given an error message stating that I had to wait until my federal return is accepted, which could take an hour or a few days. At this point, I'm like oh my God, I will get penalized because my State return is going to be filed late. I sent them an email asking for an explanation as to why my returns did not get filed together and why no alert button came up to let me know that I was ONLY filing my federal return. I also let them know how upset I was. I let them know that I am not blaming them for me filing on the last day; I am blaming them for taking my money and not alerting me that I was only filing my federal return. Customer service emailed me back within an hour with no explanation only to say HOPEFULLY THE IRS WILL ACCEPT YOUR FEDERAL RETURN BEFORE THE DEADLINE SO THAT YOU CAN E-FILE YOUR STATE RETURN. Are you kidding me? That's it? No explanation whatsoever. Needless to say, I won't be using those scum bags again!

Tip for consumers:
UPDATE: Luckily all went well with my issue with freetaxusa. I have had no more glitches such as the one I encountered. I have used them again after this with no issues whatsoever. I am very happy with them again, especially since they have 10% coupons and their software is very user-friendly.
