Finally a free tax site that is legitimate! I found no hidden fees or expenses! I do a simple return and this site is perfect for me! They do offer other products for tax returns a bit tricky but their prices were a so reasonable compared to other sites that offer that type of products. The first year I didn't have state taxes so it was completely FREE to file! I now live in a state that I do pay taxes, and exactly as they promised 14.99 no more! Awesome job 👏

“Absolute Scam”

Matt L.

They've somehow decided to send cashiers checks instead of direct deposit, through some 3rd party, although I set my refund for DD (and all of my banking info is correct). A $30 "check reissuance fee" has been taken from my refunds, on top of $40+ they've already taken--and of course I haven't received my refunds although they were posted on 2/22. Absolute scam, this is criminal.

I used freetax this year and after receiving notice that irs had accepted I tried to get back in to the site to check on it, since no arrangement had been made to pay what was due to the irs and after two hours of changing user name, password and getting codes to supposedly get in.Im still unable to get to access it. I have now left my phone number and they are supposed to call back but after all the issues I have my doubts on

I used this as it was suggested for veterans as a free tax site. Now reading reviews after, I should have double checked. They're telling me one of my questions is incorrect. I've double checked. When I go in they ask if I want to upgrade as the upgrade can figure it out for me. It already cost me 15$ for the free service. Like 15 isn't a big deal but it's the point. State that ahead of time. Now trying to strong arm me into paying more, I'm going to request a refund and go elsewhere

On a positive note, FreetaxUSA is pretty easy to use, only if you don't have but a few documents. There is basically no support. You have to email your question, wait for a response and hope you asked the right questions. The generic response is not helpful. The find extra deductions is lame. First and last time I will use. Paid for the deluxe should have just done the free, with the same outcome. I've used TurboTax. For years, this year they have made filing more difficult so I thought I would try something else. Lesson learned.

I went to Turbo Tax first and after putting in all my info they wanted me to pay$40. So I tried FreeTaxUSA and they said I would get $79 less. I can pay the $40 and still be $39 ahead. I think that Turbo Tax is a better deal!

For some reason this year Freetaxusa is holding refunds and not processing them in a timely manner. My refund was sent to them on 4/6 and I have yet to receive my money in my account. You charge all these fees to process through you and you don't issue refunds in a timely manner. Not sure what is going on with them this tax filing year.

Paid $14.95 for them to file a previous year 2018 state return. I waited a full year and they never did. They did submit other free returns on time, so I don't recommend paying for their service, ever.

Hello, Reginald. It sounds like you paid to prepare a prior year return on our software. While you can generally submit a current year return through e-filing, prior year returns cannot be e-filed. In order to file a prior year return, you would have needed to print it out and mail it in, according to the instructions provided on your account. If you have not done this yet, you may still do so. Our customer support team would be happy to help you if you have any questions. Please sign in to your account and click on "Support" to get in touch with them.

I looked into this site as an alternative to H&R Block, since they charge high prices. At first it looked promising. Filling in information was easy, and it provided helpful information about what info you may need and helped me find a missing form. But before finishing I felt that the calculations may be off and could skew the end result. I decided to delete my account. I search everywhere until checking the support section. It states in the support answers YOU CANNOT DELETE YOUR ACCOUNT AND SENSITIVE DATA! This would seem to be a severe lack of security if we can't remove our own data. Be aware once you create an account and start to enter data, you can't remove it.

I have used FreeTaxUSA for two years. While it generally calculates your return correctly, I had issues last year with them wanting to charge a fee when I qualified for a free return based on the information they supplied to the IRS on their free file webpage.

And this year, I am supposed to file Schedule B because I needed to submit a Fin Cen 114 form and FreeTaxUSA can not generate Schedule B unless I had taxable income over $1,500. Also, I noticed that for capital gain/loss transactions, they don't allow you to make adjustments to the information reported by brokers. And when they are faced with having an issue, they just say - sorry we can't support your return - a sad response after spending many hours inputting your tax return information (I had at least 50 capital gains/loss transactions).

Their customer service replies (while fairly fast) seem to skirt an issue. After they replied they just let my responses sit for days until I sent multiple other messages to find out what was going on. This process took over a week to get a definitive reply (that they could not properly submit Schedule B as required by IRS guidelines). To me, this also is not reasonable.

For 95+% of people that have typical returns, I think this website will do a great job. People who have more complex situations, I would think twice about using them to file your return.

Hello Deborah. We realize it can be frustrating. Generally, individuals receive their refund in 10-21 days. The IRS has indicated it can take longer if an additional review is needed. Thank you for your continued patience as the IRS works through the millions of returns and refunds submitted as they have begun processing in just the last two weeks.

Well everything seemed to be going smoothly but have an issue with my return and need some help, I paid extra for priority support only to find out that means that your issue will be dealt with by email with in 24 hours. I can see now this was a big mistake to even consider doing a tax return with an online company that provides absolutely no quick answer to even the simplest question by phone support. I will never use them again.

Hi Keith, we generally answer customer questions in much less than 24 hours (usually within the hour). Complex questions may take longer to research; easier questions can be answered in considerably less time. When you purchase the Deluxe Upgrade, your question is placed at the front of the line and is answered before the other questions in the queue. If you still have concerns about the speed of our customer support responses, we invite you to login and post a question to customer support, you might be surprised how quickly you receive an answer.

I have used Freetaxusa for many years. We use the service and pay for at least 3 returns each year for at least the past 5 years. I've never really had and issue. This year is different. I had to file an ammendment for both state and federal. Its not until after you have paid that they tell you the 14.99 they charge does not allow you to efile state. So you still have to print and mail your return. They know the State you are amending so it really should alert you beforehand. If I knew I'd have to pay for ink, paper, envelope, stamp etc. I'd of just printed the form, filled it out myself and mailed it. I was paying for the convenience. So much for that. Contacted customer care and no response yet.

Sam S. – FreeTaxUSA Rep

Hello Michelle. Prior to 2020, the IRS and all states did not have the option to e-file amendments. The ability to e-file an amendment is new this year and many states are not setup to do this yet. We anticipate that we’ll support all states that allow e-filed amendments in the future as they allow this option. I am sorry hear that your experience has not been positive this year, as it has been in the past. We do appreciate your business. Would you please direct message your email address through sitejabber so that we can be sure your concerns are addressed? Thanks!

I am very knowledgeable in the process of filing returns and such I've been preparing and filing returns for many years and am VERY familiar with how it works, As I said before I followed all the proper steps and it still has no record of my return! I have used this site for a few years not just for myself but my entire family and extended family also, But this year I have had trouble and basically they said nothing we can do sucks to be you! I sent my return via freetaxusa and got an acceptance notification on February 28th my tax return was transmitted sucessfully well it is now March 17th and the IRS shows nothing about my return says it has not been filed. When I notified freetaxusa support I was told it showed it had been accepted and there was nothing they could do to help me find out where it was or why the IRS has not received it! Wow really I will never use this site again and I will tell everyone how bad the support is. I am appalled at this service and lack of responsibility this site has when handling such important material

I have used this site for the last 6 years and have been relatively comfortable with processing my tax returns. I'm usually good about getting them in mid-February however this year with the changes in the tax laws it required a bit more to do the taxes. I had done all of the preliminary work had verified that my information was correct and was ready to file however when logged in today the system was down most all of the day. I had to then find another software program that I could put all of my tax information into and file my returns before the deadline. If this is the only business that they are in is filing tax returns then make certain that you have the bandwidth to support the volume of users that you have projected. Very disappointed

Hi, Beau! Over the past 19 years we’ve taken great pride in both our software and our technical infrastructure – especially its ability to get through the rush of Tax Day. Despite our effort to plan and test for the estimated traffic level this year, we experienced our first technical failure. We feel terrible about the stress and hardship it created for our affected customers. It’s the last thing we wanted to have happen to you on Tax Day and the last thing we expected. We will continue to improve our capacity and we hope you’ll forgive the technical failure. We are communicating with the IRS and making them aware of anyone that may have been affected by our service outage yesterday. We hope to see you return next year. Well, it's April 15th, Tax Day. This is the big dance. D-Day (or T-Day). FreeTaxUSA has a message on their site that says they're down for "Scheduled Maintenance." Really. Did that genius consult the calendar when scheduling maintenance for their website?

Probably that's just a canned message that means, "Sorry. We're operating out of our garage and really don't know how to run a website. We got more users than we expected and don't know when we'll be back up."

If you're an IT Director looking for a job, you should fix up your resume and send it to FreeTaxUSA because they'll probably be looking for a professional IT director after this debacle.

The marketing director is probably safe though. They did their job. Brought the people in. The infrastructure just couldn't handle it.

Going over to TurboTax now...;-)

I did my return in Turbo Tax but Turbo Tax wouldn't efile it because it was past Oct 15,2021. IRS says they are accepting efiles through November. I looked for hours. This site accepts them through Oct 20,2021. I needed efiling so I can update my tax filing for student loan recertification otherwise payments will go up to over $1000 per month and I don't have that kind of money. If you mail in the return, it may take months for your records to get updated to the other agencies.
Please be legit. And I am getting a refund. If your aren't then... Winter is coming.

We try to be upfront about our prices by displaying them on our home page at www.FreeTaxUSA.com. The federal return is 100% free, regardless of what you need to file or the age of the taxpayer. This is not always the case with some of our competitors who are known to add additional fees after you have committed time to their website. We do charge a small fee to prepare your state return, but feel that our direct pricing, ease of use, and access to customer support make our product the best value in the industry.

Did my taxes a few weeks ago. Received an email from FreeTax last night to file an amendment because there was an update done to their software due to itemized deductions for state not calculating properly. In my case it was 170 error in my favor. Needless to say after 5 years of using FreeTaxUSA I will no longer use their software. Errors of this kind when dealing with a customers tax return is not acceptable. Especially when State is the return we are paying them for. When expressing my displeasure with having to file an amendment due to their error Free Tax customer care was not apolgetic at all. Their answers to questions about the amendment were "its probably fine". Anyone who has had dealings with IRS knows "probably fine" doesn't cut it. Its black or white so a definitive answer is essential to correctly filing a return and or amendment. Goodbye FreeTaxUSA that was never really Free anyway.

I have used this site for several years with no problem until this year. Their program is easy to use and I was satisfied until this year. For a weird reason I had to mail my state forms rather than efile the state. Trouble is that they do not tell you that until you have paid the $12.95 email fee for the state return. And they refuse to return the payment-just a lot of double talk. I will find another program in the future.

Hello Sherry, I apologize for any confusion. We do have a preparation fee for state returns whether you e-file or mail your return. I think it is great they offer their free service. So they get a couple stars for that.:)

I signed up for their Deluxe service for $7, that is a great deal and it is only payable when you finish the return. Their online chat was responsive and generally knowledgeable and helpful, even on a busy day (April 18th). So if you are going to try this service, I definitely recommend trying Deluxe.

They did offer the ability to import information for my 2015 return from TaxACT (and several other large providers), which impressed me.

They offer two-factor authentication (sending verification codes by email or text). For this type of sensitive financial and personal information, I thought that was an important security feature for them to offer, and I was glad to see it on their web site.

This was the first year I have tried FreeTaxUSA. In the past I had used TurboTax for a number of years, then switched to H&R Block TaxCut, then switched to TaxACT. So I have lots of experience using other products, and with complex tax situations. I file complex returns including married joint return, homeowner, itemized deductions, charitable contributions, Schedule C (small business income), child tax credits, children in college, and withdrawals from retirement accounts.

My first impression was that the product is not nearly as mature is I would expect. Just entering my W-2 and 1099-R forms, I was running into limitations such as the FreeTax web site would not accept data that was on the forms such as parenthesis or dashes, the W2 had two address lines but FreeTax only accepts one address line, the 1099-R had a box blank but FreeTax insisted I had to enter a 0. Based on how many years they have been offering this service and how many returns they have processed, this immaturity surprised and disappointed me. It did not inspire confidence.

The deal-breaker for me was that when I entered the 1099-R from a well known investment firm, there was a box checked "Taxable amount not determined". TaxFree was then calculating the entire amount as taxable income. I contacted customer service and they advised me to check a box on the 1099-R that said "SEP/IRA/SIMPLE". Then FreeTax did calculate the taxable amount correctly. However, at that point I had lost confidence because that box was not checked on the 1099-R form from the investment firm. So FreeTax provided a work-around, but I was unable to enter the 1099-R "as is" as it came from the investment firm and to still get correct calculations.

Because I had lost confidence in FreeTax, I moved on to try the online version of TaxACT 2016 instead.

One final comment, beware all the glowing reviews (4.8 stars out of 5) on the FreeTax web site. They only let people submit a review after they have completed their return. So those are only reviews from their satisfied customers. It would be a lot more impressive (and accurate) if they would also accept online reviews from customers who had given up on submitting a return through their service. Therefore, I submitted a review on this web site instead.

Tip for consumers:
I recommend using the Deluxe service, which provides online chat support.

Also I recommend going into your account settings and enable two-factor security authentication (receiving authentication codes via email or text).

Hi Allan, we appreciate you taking the time to provide a good balanced review of your experience. We are always looking for ways to improve and value comments like yours.

You expressed some concern over the handling of your 1099-R income. Pension income and IRA income are taxed differently. For pension income, the taxable amount is determined by the amount that is shown in box 2a of the 1099-R. If you enter pension income, as it sounds like you did, then the amount that you enter in box 2a will determine the taxable amount. If the amount in box 2a is left blank by the firm that prepared your form, then usually, you'll need to figure the amount that is taxable using the IRS instructions for the 1099-R. Unfortunately, this is not a figure that we can calculate for you automatically because it requires a great deal of information about your pension, information to which we are not privy. We do provide an alert that suggests that in many cases you can just enter the same amount in box 2a that is shown in box 1. However, this is an alert only, and you can enter the taxable amount in box 2a. Once you do this the software will prepare your return using that amount.

Its kind of strange that I filed my ex husbands tax return with turbo tax and his was a 1040A his was accepted and has already gotten his refund. I filed mine the same day with free tax usa and mine was a simple 1040 and it is still processing. Just kind of makes me wonder! Can't call the IRS for 21 days which sucks. Is it 21 days from the date you filed or 21 business days?

Hi Liz, once the IRS accepts a tax return the rest of the process is in their hands, including timing. The timing can vary year to year and person to person. The IRS has said they expect to issue most tax refunds in less than 21 calendar days after accepting a tax return.

Free tax USA is well designed and easy to use. As other reviewers have observed, they mess up when it comes to filing the return. I had a substantial refund coming from the state of Illinois. Out of curiosity, I decided to look if the check from Illinois was deposited electronically in my bank. To my surprise, my return was never submitted. However, as of today i have been waiting two weeks for my state return. I understand that the website is not responsible for how long the IRS takes to deliver the return. Though i cannot help but but worry that a calculation went wrong and i will be fined. If possible i will update this review in the future.

Hi Antonio, processing times can vary from year to year. States generally do take longer than the IRS to process refunds. This year several states will be even slower than they have in the past due to additional fraud checks. We guarantee the accuracy of our calculations. If you ever have a question about how something is calculated, click on the ‘Contact Support’ link while signed in to your FreeTaxUSA account and our support team will be happy to assist you.
