Good stock picks Really Really disliked the up sell your company did. If this happens again I will cancel. It was relentless. Made me feel that what I signed up for had little value. Again, if this happens again I will cancel and you will not like my review or the PR

When we recommend a stock in any subscription or strategy, we are doing so with the intention of holding that stock for 3-5 years, minimum. As long-term investors, we expect the market to fluctuate - but we won’t always recommend a sell just because the stock price drops. We prefer to hold stocks in companies that we are confident in for the long term. We realize that significant price changes are worrisome to our members. Because of this, we try to post additional articles and research on stocks that have seen a downturn. For any recommended stock that changes in price by 10% in a single day, our analysts will write special reports as to why this occurred, referred to as the “10% Promise.” Additionally, it can be helpful to utilize the community boards. There, members participating in the same strategy can exchange ideas and provide input to others. The analysts themselves will also stop by the boards to answer the most prevalent questions.

If you are just getting into investing or if you are a long time retail investor, I think these guys have something for you.

They do use a lot of hyperbole and clickbait BS to get people in the door though, and I think that has come back to bite them. Their headlines and pitches promise big money and focus exclusively on their history of big wins. So people new to investing come in expecting instant returns, and aren't psychologically prepared for losses.

But if you follow sound investing principles (diversify, and in more than one industry, if you went all in on a portfolio of pot stocks you weren't really diversified!) and you have appropriate time horizons (at least 3-5 years) these guys have a wonderful track record of stock picking. I am up over 100% in a portfolio of stocks I picked from their basic service that I have held for 5 years, and 45% on a portfolio from a premium service that I've held for 18 months.

As we work to make investing accessible for a range of experience levels - from the novice to the more knowledgeable - we appreciate hearing what we're doing right (or wrong). You're absolutely right - at The Motley Fool, we're long-term investors. We encourage our members to build a diverse portfolio of at least 10-15 stocks and to hold those stocks for a minimum of 3-5 years. We believe this is the best way to counteract a fluctuating market. Congratulations on your returns thus far!

Good information
February 9, 2020

I like to see the perspectives of other pros when it comes to investing. I realize that the Fool is not a panacea for investing in stocks but definitely has some interesting view and ideas. I think at the end of the day one is ultimately responsible for his or her success in investments but the information from the Fool used properly certainly helps to stay on the road to success!

Client satisfaction

I manage approximately 95 million for clients in Washington state and began subscribing to motley fool about 6 yers ago. I wish I had started sooner. In the lat 18 months alone my clients are up over 60% on the stock portion of their portfolios due solely to motley fool recommendations. I don't listen to my brokerage firm recommendations. I listen to the Fool.

This has been an awesome service. I am a small time investor with not a lot of money to play with. I use the stock advisor service and it has paid for itself so far. But I purchased two of their recommendations when I first joined about 3 years ago. One of them is up 51.7% from purchase. The other one I am up 541.4% from purchase.

You have to be prepared to win some and lose some when taking the advice of anyone, even Tom and David. I susbscribe because it helps me think outside of the box when looking for some individual stocks, but there are too many sub-sites that require separate payment. Either you are helping people invest or you are trying to gouge them for money. You need to decide. Also, when you are introducing something, these 10 minute videos that say nothing for 9.5 minutes are too annoying to listen to. You should get to the point and say whatever it is you have to say. All that hemming and hawing around makes me shut it off and not even hear the message.

Thank you for your feedback.

We feature a number of free articles on Fool.com to help our members - or potential members - who may be new to investing. You're right - not every stock will be a winner. We have a Performance page within Stock Advisor and Rule Breakers which shows how our recommendations have fared against the S&P 500. That's why we encourage our members to build a diverse portfolio of at least 10-15 stocks. Although our analysts do extensive research and analysis before recommending a stock, it's impossible to predict how the market will perform.

Although we offer many services at The Motley Fool, we don’t expect members to purchase every service as it becomes available. There is no singular investing strategy that fits the needs, preferences, and provide a reasonable fee ratio for all investors. In that vein, I want to reiterate that our many services are not upgrades of each other--they simply follow different strategies, and have different resulting risk profiles. Since publishers like The Motley Fool are prohibited from personalized recommendations, we offer all of our expanding and various services to members who have subscribed to receive promotions, in the hope of finding a better fit for some. The fact that we offer other strategies to allow for different interests and investment styles does not diminish the quality of your current service list and its affiliated information. If you would ever like to discuss your current services, or potential other offerings, and are unsure of any potential overlap - please don’t hesitate to reach out to Member Services via the help tab on Fool.com. We feature a great team of Foolish representatives ready and able to guide you through your service(s).

Thank you for your feedback regarding our video presentations. We appreciate hearing how we can improve our services.

Long Time Subscriber
January 21, 2020

I began my association with the Motley Fool(MF) service in the 1990s with a small monthly newsletter called "Hidden Gems", but soon moved my attention to "Stock Adviser". I have learned about investing and have built my own approach based on what I have learned at MF and have done quite well with my investments.
For the last five years I have been a "Fool One" member and have used the Motley Fool Wealth Management services (They offered a GREAT deal five years ago). However, MF Wealth Management has now adopted a assets under management fee structure which is contrary to the basic tenets of Foolish investment. I will not be continuing with this service, but have extended my Fool One subscription.

For rule breakers and stock advisor: all positive. My portfolio is crowded with stocks I've bought because of them. I recommend those two services to everyone who's curious about what advice service I use.

For options: not so much. I was pleased for 3 years. But in 2019, the trade alerts from the options service withered away to almost nothing. One of the advisories said that after the beginning of the years trade alerts would resume. But still, almost nothing. I wonder what it is I paid $1000 for? I now recommend against the options service.

Shopify

My Brother in law was in an investment group and they picked stocks, but did not actually buy any. He asked me for a stock recommendation for his game and Motley Fool recommended Shopify at the time. I told him that. He did not invest, but I put $20,000 into Shopify and now I have $47,322, which is 143% gain in less than one year.

Financially, the recommendations and discussions provided by MF Stock Advisor have assisted my investment decisions, which have outperformed the broad market quite well over the past 17 years. However, I find the amount of hard sell marketing email from them annoying. I did well with Hidden Gems for the year I tried it (about 15 years ago). I did not have as much success in the year I tried their Options advice. I no longer have much free time to spend on stock analyses (nor do I enjoy it as much as other things I spend my time on), so most of my savings are now in ETFs and index funds. I suspect those who become active in their communities might do better, but that is just a guess, since I have not been highly active.

Thank you for your feedback, and for being a long-term Fool!

We appreciate your input regarding our services like Hidden Gems and Options.

You're right - it can be helpful to utilize the community boards for any active services. There, members participating in the same strategy can exchange ideas and provide input to others. The analysts themselves will also stop by the boards to answer the most prevalent questions.

Additionally, we feature a great team of Foolish representatives ready and able to guide you through your paid information. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us via the ‘help’ tab at the top of fool.com if you’d like to discuss the overlap in your current subscriptions.

If you're unhappy with the amount of marketing emails you receive, we'd like to help you fix that. At the bottom of our emails, there is a link to unsubscribe to that marketing email. Additionally, you can log into fool.com, click on "My Fool" in the upper right-hand corner of the screen, and then click on "Email Settings." This will allow you to adjust your email settings on your account. You can also reach out to our Member Services Department and we can update your email settings for you.
