If you order a larger model of TV from First Class Tvs, you will receive a followup phone call informing you that you are expected to pay an additional charge to cover shipping insurance. Nothing about this policy is listed on the product page, the same product page that explicitly advertises "This product qualifies for FREE SHIPPING". They justify this by claiming A) the shipping is free but the insurance is not, and B) that this information is available on their Shipping Policy page. It should be noted that the Truck/Air Freight Policy on the Shipping Policy page is vague and unclear as to what products require additional insurance costs. And again, there is NOTHING on the product page to suggest that the product you are buying (in my case, a Samsung 75" Q90R) is subject to additional charges. So I find myself on the phone, having just spent a huge amount of money on a TV, only to learn that I am now expected to pay an extra 6% ($225 for a $3500 purchase), at a point of vulnerability over the phone where I cannot properly assess this significant additional charge in my purchasing decision. They also claimed that they do not list the cost of insurance on their site because it is dependent on your shipping location. However, if they can immediately calculate the insurance cost while this followup is happening over the phone, then they are absolutely capable of doing that during the checkout process on their website. After some back and forth, they reduced the total cost of my order by $75, but that still leaves $150, a significant amount of additional charge, that I was not expecting to pay when I ordered my TV.
If you want to charge shipping insurance to your customers, that is fine. But the lack of transparency when you do that is complete and utter bull$#*!. If they had been upfront about the fact that my purchase would actually cost me $3725, then I would have nothing but good things to say about my experience. Every eligible product page should include language that says additional charges will apply. And those additional charges should be included at the checkout process, not over a phone call after the order has been made. To do anything less than that is exploitative, predatory, and immoral. Do not let this bull$#*! continue.
I placed an online order on November 23rd for a 55 inch LG OLED TV. Shortly later I received a call from First Class TV confirming my order. I was told there will be an additional $113 required by the shipper for cargo shipping insurance. I told the sales person in the past I have ordered a 50 inch TV and a 55 inch TV from other places and I never was charged for cargo shipping insurance. He stated that's because the other places have the insurance built into the price of the TV. Then basically what are you doing? I then asked where is the TV coming from, reply was I don't know we have several locations. Then I asked who is the shipping company? Reply was I don't know who will deliver it, we use several companies. Really, how can you say I must pay shipping insurance and you don't even know who the shipper will be? Anyway, I agreed to the insurance because the total cost was still less if I ordered anywhere else. For the TV and insurance I paid a total of $1613. At the time Abe's of Maine had the same TV for the same price plus handling and insurance charges so I figured I'd pay the same there. I could have order the TV from New Egg for $1800 total delivered. At Best Buy this TV would have cost me $2300 plus %6 sales tax. So basically I saved myself $187 which is better than nothing. But wait, I must now talk about the delivery. The sales person told me I would receive this TV within 5 to 8 business days which based on the TV size, is what is also listed on the WEB site. I figured worst case it would take 10 working business days. Well let me tell you, the first notification regarding shipping occurred on November 29th via email from a company called AM Trucking. Thats 5 business days later. The email stated the shipment is coming from California. Since I live in Pennsylvania I knew at that point I will not be receiving this TV in 8 working business days. Then today December 4th, I am told to expect delivery around December 18th. WTF! That's actual 18 working days or 25 total days since I placed the order. I decided to search for AM Trucking reviews and there is a lot of negative reviews abut shipping time. If you don't believe me check yourself. Knowing this upfront I would have cancel the order and paid New Egg the additional $187. So my friends, this is my story and the reason for the 1 star.
