So much great information available, from the records that are ready to be attached, to the collections that are available to search through. Such a wonderful resource. As with any resource, check the actual image against what is on the record page. Sometimes it doesn't match up or the transcription for a location is in the wrong country for example. Regarding the one big collaborative tree, again, validate the source citations to be sure of relationships and ensure that conflation isn't occurring.
Anyone can delete saved proof/evidence or correct lineage in efforts to hijack said lineage for themselves without any recourse for their misguided actions. They can be petty, insecure, and out right fraudulent. It doesn't matter how many times they are corrected or how much concrete proof is offered, they will continue to hijack lineages to makes themselves feel important. This is by far the single worst family tree building site on the internet. Many of them have no DNA testing to prove their claims and refuse to have their DNA tested Wil making full claims against others that have been tested and can provide incontrovertible evidence of their lineage. Then if you try to communicate with anyone about any of it, they can report you for no real offense and the site will terminate your profile. This site is entirely for fake people who stand on other peoples lineage wile posing.
As of this date, November 13,2021, I'm new to genealogy research with online sites. I have only paid for one subscription service [GenealogyBank] that was a disappointment. I've been using the free site FamilySearch for about six months now, finding it an interesting way to spend the time during the pandemic lockdown. Right away I found mistakes in my own family tree, that were made by people who had been careless about "attaching" records to my own grandparents. They were obviously wrong, as I could tell from my own personal knowledge. I corrected them and then took up the mission of making as much of the publicly available (free) information on my ancestors correct and comprehensive.
It soon became obvious to me that certain editors on FamilySearch were interested more in volume than in accuracy. They weren't necessarily "malicious," just careless. FamilySearch does have a way to report "malicious" actors, but most mistakes I've found don't seem to be of this category.
Another annoying feature is that people can supply "evidence" in support of their ancestors to FamilySearch that is hidden behind a paywall from a paid site like Ancestry.com. If one doesn't have a paid subscription to Ancestry.com, one can't verify or challenge the supposed "documentation."
I am looking for someone who has done research on the FamilySearch site to come up with ways to verify source accuracy.
Tip for consumers:
I thought at first that the Mormon Church would try to get me to join. They have not. I have no qualms about using this site to find clues about my own genealogy, and I am happy to make as much of the site accurate and comprehensive as I can.
Products used:
This is a free data site. It is a not-for-profit ministry of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints (the Mormons), and therefore not selling a product. I did not find any prosylitation on the site. I am not a member of this church and don't care about it's mission to baptize ancestors. Above questions not applicable.
I have three branches on my tree that all end up back with Jesus and Mary Magdalene in my ancestry. Does the LDS church support this theory or do they have evidence.
I was able to find quite a bit of info on my family and my boyfriends family. However, the info it provides is not always accurate. I searched myself and found a lot of wrong dates and yes It was me because everything else was correct (ie: place of birth, places I lived, parents names... etc). It can be a helpful tool if you are careful to research farther. I do like that I was able to find old u.s. census documents (originals) for my family from 1920-1940. Some other sites make you pay to see those. It is better than the pay sites, but just be careful to make sure some info is actually correct.
I used to absolutely love Family Search. I could find a birth/baptism record which would show the person's parents and a marriage record which would show the father of the bride/groom. I don't know what they've done with it but all you seem to get now is a basic record of a persons birth/baptism/marriage. No different to freebmd.
Also, as with Ancestry, even whey you ask for an exact record, you still get a mixture of records.
If you do it there way and tick for a birth or marriage - you get "No records".
It used to be a really interesting and informative site. What a shame.
Whatever you've done, please revert to the old system.
