Over priced and somewhat buggy. On my PC it seems to work fine with a few exceptions. First, the kill switch feature only works when the VPN inadvertently loses the connection from the server. Unlike other VPNs that disable the internet anytime the VPN is not connected. I think this is a security issue. Second, on the interface, it shows the previous two server locations you have used. Clicking on either one is supposed to switch you to the server you clicked. It doesn't. The VPN just disconnects and doesn't reconnect to the changed server. You have to click connect again. Third, the speed test "feature" simply doesn't work. Every time I have tried to use it to find the fastest server, the same thing happens. The test starts, measures three or four sites, then locks up. The app needs to be killed in the task manager and restarted in order to regain control. It was reported SIX updates back, but they have yet to address it, Speeds are okay. Connection stability is average. They claim to unlock Netflix if you're trying to watch the USA version from another country. Nope. All are blocked.
Now the real annoyance... My MacBook Pro. OpenVPN won't even connect. The app says it can't find an internet connection, but other apps can, When you set the protocol to automatic, there are constant disconnects. So bad that I've ditched using ExpressVPN on my Mac and I'm using a different provider. Zero problems since I switched. Yes, I have reported these problems to the support department. They claim to be working on a solution, but haven't contacted me in 3 months. They need to just rewrite the app for the Mac. Big Sur brought even more changes and the current app has even more issues with Big Sur.
Their new lightway protocol isn't very efficient for throughput. I get better speeds with OpenVPN UDP. The lightway protocol connects very fast, but is unable to maintain a stable connection so there are constant interruptions. Also Lightway is closed source. Meaning security firms can't audit the code to determine it's safety and encryption efficiency. For now, you might not want to trust this new protocol.
Conclusion... If you have a Mac, look elsewhere. The headaches aren't worth the premium price. If you have a PC, it works okay, but like the Mac, you would think these issues would be addressed immediately for a product that has such a premium price tag.
You can find better VPN services for a lower price. The premium pricetag by no means gives you better customer service. I found the CS reps to be quite arrogant and unwilling to look into problems. They offer you "canned" responses that often do nothing to address your problem. I didn't have many problems with my PC, only my Mac, and it seemed like the CS reps were completely dumbfounded when dealing with Mac problems.
I tried ExpressVPN for almost a year. It seemed to be okay on my PC but is a complete disaster on my Mac.

I always had problems with ExpressVPN. From the very start it would disconnect randomly every few minutes. You can see the icon in the service tray go back and forth between connected/trying to connect. And I have to disconnect whenever I'm doing something important, ironically, just so I can use the Internet at normal speeds. I've also always had trouble with ExpressVPN on my Iphone. I'll be out in public sitting in a waiting room (my dentist, my mechanic) and I won't be able to use the internet AT ALL. It doesn't matter if I try wifi or use my cellular data. And turning off ExpressVPN doesn't help. The only way I get back online is to REMOVE the ExpressVPN app from my phone. Then the internet works normally. Definitely a problem with ExpressVPN. Oh, and yes I reached out to their customer support for help. They just kept telling me the same thing over and over again. Never once were they any real help. I just had to suffer through poor connection.
But what's been happening over the last month has been the straw that's broken the camel's back. I'm with Frontier who promise no-throttling. But ever since the beginning of April 2018, whenever I use NO VPN I get around 50 MBPS. As soon as I connect ExpressVPN, the speeds always drop to between 2 MBPS and 6 MBPS. It's so bad that while I'm waiting for a single webpage to load I can get up and make myself a cup of coffee. It's so bad now that I'm not using ExpressVPN at all anymore. And I won't waste my time reaching out to them because it'll be the same crappy advice: try a different port. Or, uninstall the program and reinstall it with this code.
ExpressVPN was always bad for me, even during my trial period. But I was stupid and trusting. I thought I could find a solution with their help. But THE DAY AFTER my trial ended I contacted them and said, "I know I'm out of trial so you won't refund my money, but I've been trying unsuccessfully to solve these frequent disconnect problems." You know the ExpressVPN customer support response in the chat? "Yup." So he basically told me there's nothing I could do now that the trial was over.
I don't know if all VPNs are this bad. We had Private Internet Access a couple years ago and we also had troubles with them. I think the technology (VPNs) is just not there yet. It's not reliable. Worse, now that net neutrality is dead, I'm sure ISPs are targetting VPNs to throttle that traffic, no matter what they say. And yes, I've kept a 42-day speed test comparison log of my traffic with and without ExpressVPN. It clearly shows an unacceptable speed drop as soon as I connect to ExpressVPN. And no, it doesn't matter which server I used. I've bounced around all of the US and other outside-US servers. Same results.
Worst part is I gave this company my money and my trust and as soon as they were able to, they essentially told me to get lost.
Do speed tests every day you're in your trial. But realize a lot of problems are unlikely to happen until, convenient for ExpressVPN, after your trial is over.
I bought a trial version of ExpressVPN (EVPN) a year ago before taking a job outside the US. During the short trial period EVPN seemed to be work fine. But once I got overseas, the proverbial crap hit the fan. When EVPN worked, my machines were very slow. And the connection would fail every few minutes. Even though I never connected the VPN kill-switch, when the VPN was down and struggling to connect, I couldnt connect to the Internet at all. It was so consistently bad that Internet use became unpredictable. I actually had to return to the US after only 6 months BECAUSE I couldnt do my work. Others who were using EVPN throughout the country were experiencing the same problem.
Now Im back in the States and EVPN still throughout the day fails. Its typical for me to look at its icon in my system tray and see its NOT connected, obviating the very protection Im paying for. And its worse on my mobile phone. Its CONSTANTLY down. And when its active, my phone is so slow I cant load even just a webpage.
Worst of all, the company doesnt care about these experiences. When you contact customer support, you get the same insipid trouble shooting instructions. If you try to tell them youve tried the steps before without any improvement, theyll tell you you havent. Then when you send them the files showing that youve already done what theyve instructed, the communication will go dead.
And Ive tried EVERY server, but Netflix eventually denies them all despite EVPNs claim you can use them with Netflix. I have trouble using EVPN with other sites, too, like Craigslist.
How does this company keep turning up as the #1 VPN provider? Either their competitors are even worse or EVPN pays review companies for biased assessments.
I registered in Nov./17 for a monthly plan, $12.95 using Paypal, thinking I will try it, and if not satisfied, I will cancel before the 30 day free period ends. I actually cancelled 4 DAYS later because speed was extremely slow when connected to ExpressVPN. I followed the instructions on their site exactly "How to Cancel Your ExpressVPN Subscription". It tells you to select "Turn automatic renewal OFF and cancel my service on the expiration date" in your account settings. Also says "Your subscription will be canceled and you will not be billed at the end of your subscription cycle." I immediately received an email from my Paypal saying "ExpressVPN has suspended your automatic payments!" *****And this is where the SCAM begins!*****
1 month later (or 34 days after I initially registered) I contacted ExpressVPN live chat to ask why they had not refunded my $12.95 back to my PayPal account?
Chat response: (taken from actual chat log)
Visitor: I paid $12.95 for 30 day trial... cancelled before the 30 day end but... didn't receive my refund?
Gene: We have not received any request from you to cancel the subscription and receive a refund. No records on your account is saying that you requested a refund or a cancel.
Visitor: the date I cancelled was Nov 29th
Visitor: 4 DAYS AFTER INITIAL REGISTRATION
I decided to forward to them the email I received from my PayPal stating that "ExpressVPN has suspended your automatic payments" so CLEARLY they were aware of my cancellation! Just not going to admit it!
Chat response:
Gene: I have the info on my end saying you cancelled the pre-approved payments.
Visitor: I followed your instructions exactly on your wesite "how to cancel your subscription"
Visitor: i signed into my expressvpn account...
Visitor: located "automatic renewal section"
Visitor: manage settings...
Gene: Check the email you forwarded again. It says " ExpressVPN has suspended your automatic payments"
Visitor: and as per your website instructions..."turn automatic renewal OFF and cancel my service "
Gene: Meaning we did not revoked or cancelled the subscription but we turned off the automatic renewal only since you disabled your "Paypal's Pre-Approved Payments"
Visitor: YES! AGAIN... for the 5th time... why would express vpn suspend my subscription 4days after registering?
Visitor: why? Why? Why?
Visitor: if I didnt cancel?
He told me unfortunately I was beyond the 30 day money back guarantee, and added "You cancelled from your mode of payment but not with us." (even though I used their own website!)
Fortunately for me, $12.95 is a small amount of money BUT multiplied by thousands of other fish like myself who bit on their hook, can be a lot for them!
****You MUST contact ExpressVPN in writing using email or live chat to have a dated record of request to cancel, for any chance of a refund!! ****
