“Better Search Results, Goodbye Filter Bubble!”

Lawrence J.
2/3/21

Duckduckgo gives me much more accurate search results than Google! I know that Duckduckgo still uses improving.duckduckgo.com, but this just makes a few anonymous ads. There are very few ads, and they don't use any of your data! You don't even have to make an account! One thing that would be nice would be something like Google Scholar, where only credible websites appear. Much better than any other web browser!

“Removing keywords not working”

Brett R.
9/1/23

Using either the "-" negative sign or using logical function such as NOT does not eliminate the keywords. This makes a search engine useful. The other issue is the results are become more and more biased towards what's popular in captalist marketing, Bing does this, be different. Searching for best massagers to buy, only shows theragun type massage tools. I can not massage my upper back with those. Haha. And I have no friends.

March 1,2020 - I have been using duckduckgo for a couple months now, and every time I perform a duckduckgo search in one tab, then open a different BROWSER and search in Google, I get practically the same results! Duckduckgo does seem to be private, but I also want really great, non-censored results. You won't get this from duckduckgo. I am looking at alternatives now.

I feel like people are on one of two sides here. They either give it 5 stars and says that its privacy is way better than other search engines, or they give it one star and say that it is 100% false advertising! I just switched to duckduckgo, and I don't really know how to feel yet. But Duckduckgo, if you are reading this comment, please think about what I just said, and read the other reviews if you don't believe me when I say that the reviews are VERY two-sided!

While I appreciate the privacy that DDG provides, I'm noticing that when I search for certain news articles on subjects, the first ones that come up are the lesser known media with an obvious agenda. This makes me doubt that DDG has no agenda of its own. Moreover, the articles are always opinion pieces and editorials rather than simply news articles.

You have the best privacy policity are the result in basic search are great, but i really use a lot's the search engine tool and your results are just bad.
In important search i always keep google tab open and the indexing in subject like programming, etc. are just way better

It's not as fast as Bing but probably the same load speed as Google from my experience. DuckDuckGo just doesn't really pop out for me. There is nothing innovative about it. It's just an average search engine. If you're an average person, by all means, this search engine is for you.

Tip for consumers:
Just an average search engine, nothing special about it.

I can't use duckduck because every time I have to answer something online, or in my email, it doesn't redirect me to where it should. It just redirects me to a bookmarked page. It makes me so angry that I'll just be tracked by Google. I can't answer anything on an important form because I lose my page. That's a really bad feature. People need to be directed to the right page when filling out forms.

I don't know what to believe. The truth about DuckDuck vs Google will not be found in the reviews. I have noticed that several 1-star reviews have the same "BS" included in their reviews. This makes me believe that the same person is writing the 1-star reviews. So unfair to the real reviews. There are very few in-the-middle 3-star reviews. Typically those are the truth. No one or no thing is perfect. To many 5 stars are rarely accurate. They lie too. I don't think we will ever know the truth. I am going to stay with Google, at least I know they are BS (lol/smile).

Accidentally bumped into this search engine while using one of the known browsers. Seems to work well, but I dont really get the point of actually using this.

Duckduckgo claims to only provide ads based on what you currently search, however I had looked up Planned Parenthood, then I started seeing ads for Planned Parenthood when I was looking up mothball deodorizers. This was the only instance where I caught them tracking, but it still seems suspicious since they claim they're not like the rest...

DuckDuckGo is okay, it gives you more results and if you get the chrome extension it will rate the safety of the websites. But it does still run cookies, (although that would be tracking the websites you're on), and... wait, hold up. Why is DuckDuckGo making an extension for google chrome on the GOOGLE CHROME webstore? Google chrome is obviously owned by google, as stated in the name. DuckDuckGo also advertises itself on YOUTUBE, also owned by google. Welp, now google is helping DuckDuckGo. Umm...

Well, I've just changed my search engine to DuckDuckGo just to test it out. DuckDuckGo's goal is to "Let people have privacy on the internet" but it tracks down what you search. I guess there's no privacy on the internet after all.

I have used DDG for 4 months without finding any major snags in its operation. It is a little annoying that you have to disable the two DDG pop-up ads on all of your machines individually - and it took me a little while to work out how to do it.
I use DDG on an IMac Latest OS), my browser is Safari. I had a minor problem and contacted DDG support only to be told "We do not support Apple Macs". Ridiculous!
Sorry guys, but that is the end of my brief flirtation with DDG...

Although it appears I am using the duckduckgo web site on my local computer, I can still see the previous users Facebook account still logged in. In addition, the game I play Farmerama.com has several names of previous uses on the account, and these did not even sign in on the same day. The library used to delete this information on a daily basis, but now using Duckduckgo, they don't seem to be doing so. The Duckduckgo site comes up when you put a Chrome icon, and the library is using duckduckgo as the default. If you have a contract with Chrome, something regarding privacy isn't right. I don't know why you would trust a Google browser anyway, since you have things written by your executives saying they are not trustworthy when it comes to privacy. I can't send you a like because the library won't allow me to save screen shot, or any other file to the computer. The library is the Alexandria, LA *******.

When I submitted a complaint it sent my complaint to a totally unrelated web site. I sent them the following message.

The duckduckgo sent me to this site because I had previously clicked on something about Quora and duckduckgo. It redirected the email to that site. Duckduckgo says they are easy to contact, but apparently not so.

There are many good reviews from members of both sexes. The vast majority of the single star reviews were written by men, maybe all because some reviewers have initials instead of a first name, and many using trucker language. I am just starting so don't have a review one side or other, but it's worth a try if the trailing ends.

Whether it's a negative or positive review, I'm just sick and tired of these whiny Trump Supporters crying out censorship. I see enough of this crap everywhere else. Why bring DuckDuckGo into your Trump d***riding? What the $#*! does this search engine have to do with politics? White people get on my nerves lmao. Also, 3 stars because I can't seem to change the search filter from strict to off. It keeps reverting and I don't get it. Why can't I choose what I want?
Anyway, you guys can't stop anyone from criticizing trump. It's time you get over that $#*! and grow up. Y'all need to learn how to read and educated yourselves on what the First Amendment is ACTUALLY about. If you think climate change is a hoax, then y'all are the perfect example residents from other countries need, to prove that Americans are $#*!ed.
Sigh... this country is beyond doomed...

Sometimes results are good and sometimes not even close. Any site needs revenue to survive and since users are not paying for DuckDuckGo I am sure its receiving revenue from somewhere. So do not confuse privacy benefits from target results that benefit DuckDuckGo supporters. Yeah I get that DDG does not keep your personal data but it has to receive some data to give any sort of accurate results. Google searches are probably not very focused on privacy but if you do not use a Google account its not logging your results in any specific identifying way. For me its all about good results and DDG is still hit or miss for me.

I've been using DDG with Firefox for about 2 years. I've been happy with this search engine most of the time and like that it doesn't report my usage but a number of things annoy me. ++

Most annoying: when at a site I've finished with, if I type in a new search in the upper right search slot and hit <ENTER>, I will get the results of a search WITHIN the site I want to leave. The search title for the results is: "(search item) site:(website last viewed)" Example: "edward site: whitepages.com". Here I've wanted to search for "edward" on the Web but DDG constrained the search to within my last site viewed, which here is "whitepages.com". After using (typed item) <ENTER> for decades for a search on the whole internet, this is assbackwards. If I want to do a site search, I will deliberately click the DDG site search symbol (which is a kind of bullseye) in the search slot. Oh, and this setting is NOT in the DDG settings options. I have complained to DDG without response, so I'm saying it here. ++

Next most annoying is setting a search which I know will give many hundreds of results and getting only a dozen or two. I almost feel censored (and the term typed was in no way something to censor). I often have to add more terms to get results. Usually, I want the search engine to help ME by providing too many results and letting me use these results to prompt edits or conditions to my search, as necessary. I did make sure that child protection setting in DDG was off.++

3rd most annoying thing is no hint as to how many results were returned. Sometimes it's very helpful to know that there were only 17 results, total. I might need to widen my scope. Or if there were 108,500 results, then I should narrow. DDG gives no hint to this. Am I looking at all there is when I scroll down 3 pages or a bottomless pit of results (like Facebook)? ++

I'll end there for now. I hope DuckDuckGo will improve as I do like it's look and feel MOST of the time.
