I have been using Dropbox, on and off, for around 9 years now and have had a good experience using their free storage service. It is very easy to store, share and transfer your files using the website. The free version gives you a pretty good amount of space to store your files. You probably won't fill it up, unless you are a hardcore/heavy user and/or store video and audio files. I don't use this as much anymore, but their service is still good. I have never used their paid premium version, so I can't comment on the quality of it. But I would imagine it is very good, since the free version is very good.
I've had a Dropbox account for many years with zero problems. Then on 01/30/24 I get a notification that my account was disabled. I sent customer service an email asking why this happened. I get a robo response saying that I "violated use policies" all i had were Conservative memes and videos supporting our President Trump. Now all of my precious photos and business files are permanently gone, no option to file a petition to get my account back. Nothing. Conservatives beware of this "woke" Leftist company. Put your important files and photos on another platform. You have been warned.
Perhaps I shouldn't complain since I have a free account but I had personal, important (to me)files on Dropbox for several years. Occasionally I would use them and they was always there on Dropbox until today. They are gone. Not a file available under my special folder. When I went to contact them, they want a link to the disaster so I give them one. But their form will not take my link so I am unable to even complain. Thats why I'm here.
If you have files you need to keep do not rely on Dropbox because they will disappoint you they only hold files for 30 days(free). Get yourself a disk from WD or Seagate and don't trust any of these cloud type services. Learn from my mistake!
One of the first cloud services, always worked good but latest updates are increasing the size of the app and make it less practical, with more functions that go unnoticed. A service like this one should merge with the user interface without adding more value than the one is supposed to offer: cloud storage. Still a good service but falling behind Google Drive and iCloud.
I have had a personal paid dropbox account for years. I rarely ever log in to the web version. One super annoying thing is the ease in which you can move folders without meaning to and then the next time you go to dropbox everything is missing. Requires you to login to web and see your activity. Then find that 20,000 files and dozens of folders were accidentally moved to some super obscure folder without intending to. I have had google and MS folders for many more years than dropbox and never once has that happened. I asked dropbox to make this accidental folder moving more difficult a few years ago, but since it just happened again, apparently they don't think it's an issue. You used to be able to talk to customer support but no longer. It's frightening to open dropbox and to see a whole huge body of work, years of work and files, simply vanished. OK they are't permanently gone (not yet anyway) but still I never asked to move that folder (containing thousands of files and subfolders) to that obscure totally unrelated folder, so it shouldn't have happened.
UPDATE: File structure and page organization is better and more organized and a little more ergonomic. Glad they're trying. Still slow though. I'm updating my review from 1 to 3 stars.
ORIGINAL REVIEW: This webpage is NOT ergonomic at all. I JUST WANT TO MOVE, DOWNLOAD, UPLOAD AND DELETE FILES. The interface is CLUNKY, SLOW, AND NOT ERGONOMIC AT ALL.
For instance, if I want to simply delete or download a file, the buttons should be RIGHT THERE. Not tucked up in some menu all the way to the right or where ever. Also different folder views for the same files DRIVE ME NUTS. MAKE ONE VIEW: "My Files" which includes ALL FILES IN THE FOLDER STRUCTURE YOU WANT. Terrible. Presently looking for something better. Disgraceful.
I ended up with more than one account, all because I missed something, then found it after the fact. I called figuring I'd get it sorted. Well I got no help whatsoever, so I went and had to email them my issue, Now I need to wait 1-3 days for a reply! Customer service stinks! I like having the virtual back up drive, but their customer service needs improvement!
Dropbox was fine when I was using it with my free space, but when my Space Race extra 15GB expired, it was down to free space again. I don't mind paying for Dropbox because I love the app, the simplicity and how easy it works. I saw no reason to switch until I found out that Dropbox offers absolutely no plans in between 2GB Free and 1TB for $9.99 a month. If you're like me who uses anywhere between 50-100GB (which is the most my MacBook SSD could hold anyway), then you're out of luck.
Other competitors offer 100GB for $1.99, and 1TB for $6.99. Unfortunately, while I wish to remain loyal to Dropbox, they are not giving more cost-efficient plans and I could see very well why they should be losing money from subscribers. While I find their app to work the best, I was pushed to switched to another cloud service that gave me the plan I wanted.
I am not very happy with Dropbox's way of pushing dollars out of people considering the cheapest plan is $100 a year, which isn't cost efficient if you're only using about 5-10% of space annually. Again, I am not asking for free space. I just wish Dropbox would have more competitive prices and give a low-volume cost to individual users rather than jump the curve to 1TB immediately.
In addition to that, their desktop application updates in the background automatically which is a really high security risk for power users and users alike. While I expected that from Google, Dropbox doesn't have the capital to manage their security in every update they make. In fact, as most people stated, they should not even be trusted to manage your server. There is no way to disable automatic updates either. I stopped using Dropbox entirely because of this.
I have read the reviews and know the pros and cons of this service. Now for my thoughts.
1. Use the free version. Too many stories about billing problems here. Sure people are more inclined to write when there are problems, but there should not be so many stories here. One is too many and any more than that is crazy.
2. Do not store anything you can't get back. They don't sound very trustworthy. I would not risk it.
3. Careful with shared materials. I shared some ebooks for business years ago and somehow got a notice to unshare that particular folder. I don't know who's looking at my data, but what I do with it is my business. Especially when it has to do with MY business. Have not had that problem with Box, Google, or even OneDrive. And I trust MS less than anyone!
4. Be careful with ALL cloud services. There is no protection like your own, so back up EVERYTHING and TRUST NO ONE.
Using Dropbox to share innocuous docs with coworkers and friends is ok, but do not swear by it or come to count on it. From one Certified Ethical Hacker to everyone else.
I love dropbox, it took a friend of mine recommending it for some time before I actually signed up, but now that I use it, it's value prop is clear to me. I like the functionality - however they fall behinds some of their competitors for not having a Symbian application, All in all, great concept; love the site and software, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is computer literate, likes "stuff,"
Decent, but good be better. Do agree that at times they do not answer your questions if you have some serious issue.
Dropping two stars for honesty. Dropbox creates contact lists from your email contacts without asking your permission. When you use Dropbox's "Invite by email" widget to invite friends, Dropbox keeps the email addresses as a contact list within your Dropbox account. When you go to share a folder and begin typing a name, several names from your email contacts appear. Dropbox does not allow you to remove those names, even if most are people with whom you would never share. Don't type too fast when sharing!
Decent overall until you run into any kind of problems.
Then. If you manage to get anyone you never get a real answer. And if you do get an answer it doesn't do anything for you. The, after all that they just go silent.
Overall, not bad unless you need help with something.
Great way to share information. I don't exactly understand how the folders and sharing works. Maybe I am not that smart, but I think a good design should be fairly intuitive.
Dropbox is a modern workspace designed to reduce busywork-so you can focus on the things that matter. Sign in and put your creative energy to work.
