Those of you out there thinking of sending your cameras to this guy. Think twice! I made the mistake and lost my sony dsc-h2 which was in perfect working condition except for the shutter button. I don't have time to write reviews, good or bad, but really feel I should warn others about this scam.
My camera had a broken shutter button but was otherwise working fine and I was taking great pictures with it. I sent it to Darntoothysam for repair around mid may and got it back yesterday completely broken. They never sent a confirmation of having received the camera, didn't reply to my emails asking for status, and never answered any calls. The one email they sent when I was getting ready to file a claim with paypal was to say they had replaced the shutter button but then the backlighgt didnt work "when they put the camera back together" but they were going to order the backlight and fix it for me. I waited a couple more weeks and sent a few more emails but again they didn't bothered so I went ahead and filed the claim. Thomas responded a couple times during the mediation period, pretty much to say it wasnt his fault the lcd didnt work and implying that it was probably already broken when he got the camera. You would think somebody in the business would inspect and test these cameras before performing any work. His response was without any apologies or promises to get it fixed or giving any time frame for it. He was rather rude and said he was going to try but if I didn't want to wait "he would put the bad shutter piece back in and ship my broken camera back to me". So I decided not to take any more chances while I was still within the period allowed by Paypal and at least was able to cut my losses and get my money back.
As for the camera, I received it yesterday. I came with no screws, the lcd does not turn on as he promised, he didnt send the rechargable batteries I had sent with the camera, and the round metal under the shutter button is chipped and smashed. I took a picture in auto mode to check the lens and it came out all blurry. Not that I had any plans for this camera other than the trash, maybe a toy for my daughter but without the screws it will fall apart in the first minute.
So again, not recommended. Stay away from this shady business.
THE SHORT STORY:
My father sent a camera to Thomas Drayton at Darn Toothy Sam (http://www.darntoothysam.com/) for repair. His card was charged immediately, but then he had no further correspondence from them for over 6 weeks. We finally got ahold of them via email, and we were told that the repair was delayed because the problem might be more than just the LCD. We also heard from owner, Thomas, that the camera would be shipped back within the week.
Again we waited, with no camera arriving in the mail and no correspondence from them. We finally reached them again two weeks later, explaining in no uncertain terms that we were very displeased that we had not heard any type of status update.
After going back and forth a couple more times with emails, Darn Toothy Sam wrote my father a VERY sarcastic email, informing us that he was sending the camera back and refunding my father's money.
His email started with:
"I am sorry for trying to repair your camera for you for a reasonable price, and also sorry that I am not perfect in every way as you so obviously are."
And ended with:
"Please take your money and your broken camera, and have a nice day because you are a wonderful person, and I deserve to be executed for my horrible crimes."
Thomas Drayton might repair cameras just fine, but his customer service is absolutely horrible. When confronted with a customer's displeasure at being ignored, Thomas chose to strike back with sarcasm instead of making the situation right.
THE LONG STORY:
OCT 18: Darn Toothy Sam sent confirmation that they'd received the camera
OCT 20: My father's credit card was charged for the repair on 10/20/10. Over the next 6 1/2 week my father received no further correspondence from DTS, even after sending 7 emails and calling 3 times.
DEC 3: My father asked me if I would be able to find a way to get ahold of Darn Toothy to see if I can find out what the deal was with his camera…if it was getting repaired, if it had gotten forgotten? I sent Darn Toothy a tweet on his Twitter stream,
I commented on his blog, I posted on his Facebook wall, and I sent him an email.
And I finally got a response. According to Alex (who replied to the email I'd sent) my father's email had gone into SPAM which was why he'd gotten no response. Alex proceeded to tell me:
"We have the camera and repaired it when we received it, but the LCD displayed only in purple! We have a new LCD that we are testing for it, but it might be the main board of the camera which we have ordered as well and should be expecting it early next week. I will keep you and your father posted of the status."
I thanked him for responding finally, but pointed out that having the emails go to SPAM shouldn't have prevented them from updating my father on the status of his repair when it was obviously being delayed. I got no response to that email.
DEC 5: Thomas himself replied to my Facebook wall post, saying:
"I am sending you an email with the current status (we should be shipping it back on Tuesday)"
We received no email from Thomas and the camera was not shipped back.
DEC 11: I send another email, requesting an update on the repair. No response.
DEC 16: I sent another email, and informed them that I needed to be updated immediately on the status of the repair or "we will begin to take action to recoup our losses from your company."
DEC 17: We finally received a response from Alex, stating:
"We are currently awaiting a board for the camera from our Canon distributor."
He simultaneously sent an email to my father stating:
"We are in the process of testing with a different LCD to see if it needs a new main board."
Interestingly, back on Dec 3, two weeks earlier, Alex had already said:
"…it might be the main board of the camera which we have ordered as well and should be expecting it early next week."
Obviously, something wasn't matching up. So I sent an email back to Alex pointing out the inconsistencies and asking him pointedly to explain the true status of the repair.
A little later that day, my father received this email from Thomas, the owner of Darn Toothy Sam:
"I am sorry for trying to repair your camera for you for a reasonable price, and also sorry that I am not perfect in every way as you so obviously are. I own a small repair shop, and when it comes to ANY repair business, PROBLEMS and COMPLICATIONS happen. It's the nature of all repair businesses!
I cannot afford to pay a call center in India to answer my phone calls, and we answer emails as quickly as we can. We have almost 15,000 happy customers, and yes there are about 5 or 6 complaints on Sitejabber about service taking too long, there are also just as many saying they were happy with our service. Happy customers don't normally go out of their way to leave online reviews, just complainers. I'm sure we will be seeing a complaint from you soon, how you had to threaten us with legal action, etc. etc. Because we were stealing your camera.
Ever stop to think that EVERY business has customers that are unhappy with their service?
If the worst thing in your life is that you have to wait to get your camera repaired so that you save $100, then I guess things aren't too bad are they?
Please take your money and your broken camera, and have a nice day because you are a wonderful person, and I deserve to be executed for my horrible crimes.
Thomas"
Thankfully my dad DID receive a refund and he did get his camera back in the mail. The package also included this written by Thomas on the bottom of the packing slip.
"Sorry for trying to repair your camera. I should be reported to the authorities for such crimes!"
DEC 29: Although we thought this whole fiasco was over, my father received this email out of the blue from our friend Thomas.
"Mr. T…
I operate a small shop and try to keep my prices reasonable, hence I cannot afford a call center to answer calls and we do the best we can with everything else. If your daughter hadn't been so over the top, things would have been fine. Thanks to her, it will now cost you $150-$175 to send the camera to Canon. Hope she pays for it.
Thomas"
If 'over the top' means expecting a minimum of customer service from a service-oriented business, then I am guilty as charged. Mr. Thomas Drayton has shown his character clearly as a businessman, and he has chosen NOT to improve his business as a result of this transaction.
I'd suggest avoiding DarnToothySam.com
