Poor management taken care of the customer
February 5, 2021

I had placed an order for an on Onkyo receiver when the receiver had come to my house and was installed professionally it was defective write out the of the box. I called Crutchfield customer service which the people in the work the customer service line are excellent m. Unfortunately they're limited to what their can do for the customer the young lady on the phone tried to assist me but when she was unable to do to the fact that there were none replacement receivers available until May I then asked is there any kind of different receiver equivalent or upgraded did they be willing to offer me some type of special price due to the circumstance. She put me on hold spoke to manager and the manager said start with the technical support group 1st they switch me over to the technical support spoke to the technical support rep which is also an excellent person to deal with he agreed right away that the Akio receiver was defective at that point he issued a return shipment. And a credit for the receiver that I had purchased at that point unfortunately I needed to call back in so that's what I did I called back and spoke to another customer service rep which was also excellent that went above and beyond trying to get my difficult situation taken care of due to the fact it now I've already paid for and professional installer to come out to my house once they couldn't do it now I have to pay them again to come out because I didn't buy product from him I bought product from Crutchfield. Unfortunately the only receiver that would fit what I need which is a 7.2 was a Marantz which was $1000 which is almost double what I paid when I had asked if they could speak to the manager about some type of compensation of a happy medium to meet in the middle due to the circumstance she spent over an hour and a half trying to communicate with a manager of the situation and unfortunately got no resolution other than I need to pay more for the receiver not even the slightest bit of an offering off of that that now thousand dollar receiver I had to purchase. Unfortunately Crutchfield had me in a rock and a hard place because I had over $450 worth of gift cards that I got for Crutchfield and so therefore I had no other option but was forced to pay over $500 more for a receiver due to the one that I originally purchased was defective out of the box and could not be replaced until May which is a ridiculous amount of time when I have no stereo at my house due to the fact that it was torn down waiting for this receiver. I feel that the right thing to do would be take care of the customer I feel that customer service representatives at Crutchfield have the best interest in mind for all their customers they speak to but are handcuffed by the management that does not appreciate customer support their business and does not see the customers frustration and concerns or they don't have any type of caring to take care of the customer I would hope that's not the case but the customer service reps at work on the front line are excellent their managers unfortunately lack of desire to take care of the customer

Customer support needs to learn about the classic vehicles they are giving advice on what to buy
October 5, 2020

I have a classic car. I am replacing the interior and installing a new stereo system in the car. A customer support person got the year and make of my car and told me what items I would need that would work with my vehicle. I bought everything he said I needed to buy except the rear speakers since that was back ordered. I ordered everything else and started receiving some parts. I was promised to have the all in a few days ago. I have not received everything yet. I ordered kick panels which the support rep said would fit my vehicle so I could have speakers on each side in the front, rather then just the one speaker under the dash board. I looked at the pic and asked about the speaker cut out and the vent with the handle my car had. He said it was a generic picture and that it would work. I got everything but the kick panel and called back about it. I wanted to reconfirm that is was the correct one. After telling her my concern she looked it up and told me if I had a manual transmission. I told her I did. She said it wouldn't work due to the manual transmission. The original rep never asked. I researched my car and confirmed that the vehicle comes with 2 different kick panels due to the vehicle having AC or no AC. My car has no AC and has a vent that goes at least 3 inches into the metal housing on the vehicle and has a built in handle to open and close the vent. With AC, it the same except no handle is needed. Both have the vent as part of the kick panel. Cutting it out on the one I ordered does not have a vent cover piece. So I have wasted my time ordering this and now have to find another way to get 2 speakers in the front of my car. I also still have not got the kick panel in yet. This was just a waste of time on my part. I will be sending just about everything else back except the radio. This is the first time I used this company and it will be me last. I will definitely let all the classic car owners I know and the car shows I go to not to buy from this company. Why have a support person tell me what to order and then find out it won't work. I can wing it myself on other web sites and the blame would be mine. Not very happy with this experience. To confirm, this is from MY OWN experience and I am not writing this for anyone else or for any other purpose than letting people know what I had to go through ordering these parts for my 1967 Firebird which I have owned for many years. I also have another classic car I have owned for over 20 years.

Well worth every penny
October 18, 2018

Pros: Excellent sound, great radio pickup, tons of options.
Cons: No manual included, dim and low-res display, no Playlist playback from USB.

I live in the mountains at the edge of FM radio reception from the nearest city. I called Crutchfield tech support and said I wanted a stereo that was good at picking up weak radio, among other things. The tech recommended Pioneer units as having superior reception. I decided on this unit (MHV-S600BS) as it had all the features I wanted and man, was the tech right about the radio. I can clearly pick up stations that previously were mostly static.

But I hardly wanted the stereo just for radio. I also wanted to add Bluetooth capability so I could make hands-free phone calls and needed a USB port for my music. I ordered a scratch-dent model but, too be honest, the box neve looked opened and I couldn't find a single flaw.

Installation was a breeze, especially with the included Metra wiring harness. I used Posi-Twist connectors to tie the harnesses to the unit (item #669PP500), which were more compact and secure than standard wire nuts yet easily removable, unlike crimp or solder.

Pioneer does not ship this with any sort of manual, just a single (large) page with basic installation instructions in 4 languages. Luckily they do offer a full manual (PDF) on their web site for download. I didn't need this for installation as the wiring were all standard colors but it was a must-have for figuring out the menu options.

Bluetooth setup was a snap. Linked right up with both my Samsung Android and my iPhone. I mounted the microphone to the steering column of my truck. My wife says that she can tell I'm on speaker but the calls are clear, even at highway speeds. I'm still having trouble getting the unit to pull down my Recent/Dialed/Missed contacts but I honestly haven't tried too hard yet.

The Display is decent. I've found it to be a bit dim. Having access to the full color spectrum and lots of bouncy pixels is cool, I guess, but not something I care much about. It is a low resolution screen with fairly large pixels but about what I'd expect for around $100. It offers a lot of display options and layouts. It took some playing around but I found a layout that displays time on the top row and track info on the main screen, which is what I prefer.

I have my music, about 12GB worth, on a low-profile thumb drive. Navigating through the USB device isn't very smooth or intuitive but I usually just set it to random. I was a bit disappointed to discover that I cannot select music by artist or playlist, only by folder. Artist/playlist sorting appears to only be available for streamed (Pandora/Spotify) playback and I use neither.

The sound from this is quite amazing. I have an older pickup with low-end tri-axial speakers front and rear, no subwoofer. Since 95% of the time I am alone in the truck I programmed it for 'Position', front/left. I have the EQ set to 'Natural' (one of 5 presets plus two custom) and the sound is the best this truck has ever heard. I am picking up things I have never heard before, in songs I've listened to 100 times. There are options for simulating a subwoofer, which I plan to test out, and for adding 'Loudness', which just seems wrong. If you want you can also manually adjust fade/balance, band crossover, and speaker timing manually but so far the factory sets seem to satisfy me needs.

This was easily worth the $100 and I would recommend it for anyone wanting a versatile car stereo without breaking the wallet.

Really like Crutchfield and the new Sony MEX-GS820BT but the install was a bit rough.
August 27, 2018

Absolutely excellent service from Crutchfield on both the delivery and support during the install. However, the actual install could have gone smoother.

The Sony unit has a threaded hole on the back of the chassis that is intended to be used to attach a rear support. No screw that fit that hole came with the radio nor did it come with the dash kit shipped with the radio to help mount it in the dash. Found the metric screw I needed in my hardware collection but had to shorten it and add a lock washer. Sounds simple enough but took about an extra hour (most of my hardware collection has Imperial (English) threads rather than the metric threads the Sony uses).

The reviews and Crutchfield support recommended running at least a 12ga. Wire directly from the battery to the radio for constant power. However, the ReadyHarness I ordered required me to cut the power lead to make that connection. Not a huge deal but I think it would have been better if the harness provided for that option. Thought it odd the recommendation was for only the positive power connection. No mention was made of doing the same thing for the ground connection. Not sure I understand that - they both play a part in getting adequate power into the unit. The unit itself is electrically isolated from ground due to all the plastic mounting (well except for the wiring harness and antenna ground). Anyhow I ran an extra ground wire to the ground connection - perhaps not needed but it certainly will not hurt anything. Logically I have one other concern here in that the heavier gauge wire still has to connect to the lead in the ReadyHarness which is much smaller than 12Gauge and I would think that could negate much of the value of running the heavier wire from the battery to that connection. Time and lots of high volume playing will tell whether or not it was worth the trouble to make the heavier gauge connections.

This was not my first install of an aftermarket radio so I was surprised the Sony unit did not include install instructions. The dash mount kit instructions were a bit sparse. The install instructions provided by Crutchfield are OK but also a bit sparse. Am glad this was not my first aftermarket radio install.

Never-the-less, the radio is now installed, looks good and sounds great. The Sony Music | Center App is worth the download. Am liking the unit a lot and looking forward to my next road trip.
