I believe in the value of using, cautiously, supplements very strongly. I am shocked by how most even younger doctors in my health plan (Kaiser Permanente, Norcal) either dismiss supplements a waste of money; as totally without any quality controls; or as dangerous and ineffective. Yes, there are a lot of people out there pushing supplements that are cranks, and recognized as such by Quackwatch, including, for example Greenmedinfo, Mercola, and even occasionally Andrew Weil, whom I respect generally occasionally.
There are many things about CL that are commendable. First, it goes to great lengths to weigh the scientific evidence of on a supplement and to assess risks and benefits, and above all, it cites a good range of scientific sources to support its judgment or enable one to make one's own. Secondly, the layout and formatting is excellent and makes for easy reading. Thirdly, it is a huge plus that CL obtains its own samples and not ones provided by the brand or manufacturer.
I do think that CL could be a bit more immediatist in the way that the People's Pharmacy (PP) tends to be (my other "go to" site). Yes, I appreciated your piece on COVID 19, but I think this should be updated and I have got more from the PP site. For example, when some "major" new story or scientific evidence breaks which really casts light on the benefits or risk of a supp. Why not send out a special bulletin. Secondly, why not include, as the PP does, the occasional excellent video link where an expert is talking about the pros and cons of a supplement? Thirdly, sometimes, but usually this is not the case, you test a rather limited range of brands. Let's take the supplement Quercetin as an example of a very "au courant" supplement where you tested only a limited range of brands. In addition, you mention two brands that you say exist in this US (but I have been unable to find) that contain EMIQ for greater bioavailability but you do not test either. Here is another example of where a video could have been helpful. Thus, through a link provide in the PP newsletter recently I got this excellent video with the Canadian Broadcasting Co. Interviewing an expert on Quercetin https://www.cbc.ca/player/play/*******818.
Finally, I am struck by how few people know about you site. I follow this kind of stuff closely and have for years but only about 4-5 years ago did I find out about you I think through a newsletter from PP. I have never met a doctor that has heard of you, and when I follow debates re supplement (s), specific or general, in places like the New York Times I am very surprised that no-one mentions you. I did once see you get a very favorable mention in Consumer Reports a few years ago. But you could and should do more to "push" your site for many reasons including enabling you to test more brands products et al., as well as to put a ceiling, or even lower, the "creeping up" annual sub.
Otherwise CL is excellent, and a site that I us a lot. Keep up the good work!
