THEY ARE CHARGING ME FOR OVER 300 BUCKS! STAY AWAY FROM THEM!
May 8, 2019

I rented 2 different books from this company over 2 years ago and that was the only time I really rented books from this company. I rented 2 different books but 1 copy from each and when I was done with my term at that time, I sent them both to them in the same box before the due date. I mailed the package on April, 2017 and soon after I sent
The package, I received a confirmation that this company received my package which I believed that both books were inside. Unfortunately, about 2 months later, on June, 2017, I received an email said that my credit card account was charged for $324 for not returning one of the 2 books that I rented from them. I checked back with the post office and they confirmed that they received my package with my books and I tried to contact with them to let them know that they received their books at that time but could not find any phone number to reach them out. So, I just assumed that they tried to charge the money from my account before noticed that they received the books back. So since I could not contact with them and I had the proof that they received my package, I decided to cancel my credit card in order to avoid from paying the money for the book that I already sent to them.

Since then, I did not receive any communication from them, until last month when I received a letter from a debt collection agent that said I owe this company $314 for the book that I believed that I returned over 2 years ago in the same package. Again, I tried hard to contact with them until I learned that they only have a live chat communication for their customers. I did not know exactly for which book I was charged for until I talked to one of their representatives named Rachel over their live chat. She confirmed that they received my package with the books but it had 2 copies of the same book which was the first book, and they did not receive the second book. I tried really hard to explain to them that I put the both books in the same package and sent it to them and their could have been a mistake made in their shipment department where the person who received my package could have made a mistake in scanning the books. He or She might scanned just one of the books twice and reported that to their system wrong
And because of that their system is saying that I sent 2 copies of the first book, but did not send the other one.

If you can see my concern logically, WHY on the earth I would find or purchase another same copy of the first book from somewhere else and put it with the other same book that I rented from their company and send them both to them and keep the other book for myself just in order to pay them $314 later?
Logically, there can't be 2 copies of the first in the package that I sent to them because I did not order or buy any other book for that term and it was only this company that I rented those 2 different books and sent them back to them in the very same package. But they are not really willing to help me to figure out what really happened to the books that I sent to them over 2 years ago and explain me why I did not hear from them since June, 2017 when they tried to charge from my account $324 but suddenly received a collection letter just a month ago regarding to the book who knows how it was lost in their shipment department?!

I believe that they were supposed to contact me right then, 2 years ago when they could not get money from my account and helped me out to resolve this concern and honored their service for their customers instead of keeping it quiet for over 2 years and send it to a collection company now. I am really disappointed for it and I tried to talk to their customer service agents but they seemed like not willing to help me. They said that my case is 2 years old and they can't help me with anything so I just need to contact with the collection company and pay off the bill. If I have received any communication from their billing department or the customer service team 2 years ago after I canceled my
Credit card transaction, we could have worked it out back then instead of dealing with this now and being told by Rachel that my case is too old to retrieve any information regarding to my package. It is really sad that they kept it quiet from me for 2 years until my case was too old so they can't help me but get the money for their book from me by sending my account to collection company now!

I sent an email to their *******@bookbyte.com email address and hopefully hear back from them soon since the collection company is giving me a due date by the 24th of May, 2019 to pay them off the money they are requesting for the book that I already sent to them. They need to check with their shipment department to see if there has been any mistake made in receiving my package 2 years ago. I am an honest person and I know that I put both books in that very same package and sent it to them 2 years ago. It is a big question WHY THE PERSON WHO RECEIVED MY PACKAGE RECORDED THAT I SENT 2 COPIES OF THE SAME BOOK INSTEAD OF 2 DIFFERENT BOOKS THAT I WAS SUPPOSED TO SEND BACK TO THEIR COMPANY AND NOW WANT ME TO PAY $314?

I REALLY DO HOPE THAT THEY CAN HELP ME TO resolve this concern because I really don't want to pay $314 for the book that I know that I already sent back to them 2 years ago. This money could be just a little money for their company but it is
A month worth grocery money for my family since I am the only working adult
Who needs to support my 3 little children. This is just so much money for my family. On the other hand, it is such a dishonest action that this company is claiming that they did received 2 copies of the same book but did not receive the other one and trying to charge me for $314 for something that I already sent to them. If this company still has left even a little bit of humanity and honesty, they should find out more if the person who received my package made a mistake accidentally 2 years ago and recorded about the
Package wrong.

DO NOT SELL YOUR BOOKS TO BOOKBYTE
March 14, 2019

I tried selling my textbooks to BookByte for the first time. This is what I wrote in my complaint to the FTC:

BookByte is a website that both sells and buys textbooks. I used their site to verify the value of 5 textbooks I wanted to sell. My total of quoted prices was supposed to be $107.25. I mailed my books within their delivery window and the condition of the books were good. I got a PayPal payment of $70 from Bookbyte. They no longer provide customer service over the phone, so I had to e-mail them asking why I did not get my full value,

The person I was speaking to over e-mail is Rachel S., their Customer Service Lead. She said one of my textbooks, "Multinational Business Finance" is a *teacher's edition* and they cannot buy back this book. Disappointed, I asked for them to send that book back. She said it's their policy not to do that. I had no indication that my textbooks is a teacher's edition, nor can they prove it to me other than their word and that "they inspected it twice". I can sell that textbook to a few other providers, and they are taking it for free. We've exchanged several e-mails and I told them they're blatantly ripping me off and that I would file a complaint with the FTC. After several e-mails where Rachel implies it's my fault for not reading their policies thoroughly enough, her recent e-mail notified me she had a *supervisor* look over my case and they would give me a 50% value of the book as a *courtesy*. I don't know about their business as a seller of textbooks, but as a buyer, it's a slippery slope of dishonesty. Going back to my e-mail confirmation, they word my buyback as "quoted prices" which Rachel referred to as not the exact value they had to pay, which is subject to change. And the fact that they're keeping my property without giving me cash they told me I would be given once the books arrive is THEFT.

I still have the original e-mail invoice of this textbook to prove my ownership. And not only did attempt to get away with keeping my book because of their company policy (which any company can establish and edit whenever they please) and not at all make an exception to give my book back (not even suggesting I pay them a delivery charge), but attempted to give me only HALF of what they promised to give me AS A COURTESY. They would argue those prices are subject to change and that I would be okay with that risk if I decide to do business with them--my takeaway. That's not a service, that's a bait-and-switch. They either need to start operating honestly or not at all.

If I bought a book from them and I decided their copy (which I've never seen before until I get it) does not meet my standard, would it be fair for me to pay you the value I THINK it's worth by asking my credit company to cancel the charge and pay a fraction? No, that's not fair, right? Well, that's the kind of business Bookbyte is pulling.

Did Bookbyte not pay you the value of your books and just kept it without even the option of returning it to you? File a complaint using the Complaint Assistant on the Federal Trade Commission web site. If there are enough complaints, justice will be served.

Bookbyte--I hope the $42 was worth it.

Tip for consumers:

Don't.

AWFUL customer service
December 30, 2016

I have had only one experience with this company and it was god awful. I rented a textbook and although it did arrive quickly, their rental period did not reflect any normal semester. It would have cost 20 dollars more to keep for just a week longer, so I open for the shorter version. I got one e-mail reminding me that my rental was due that was sent extremely early. Finals had been stressing me so I was a few days late on my rental and when I went on the website to extend my rental fee, I was not given the option. (I have done this before with Amazon with amazing ease, but Bookbytes website is not user friendly whatsoever) I attempted to find a phone number and was unsuccessful. The online chat was disabled. I opted for my only other option which was the customer service email. Considering that is their ONLY form of communication, they take ~2 days to respond. Not very convenient when your rental is already late. The woman who was attempting to help me was extremely vague and so I just decided to let the company bill me the difference between the rental and the purchase price. I received an email several days later saying that I was, in fact, going to be charged the difference in price so that I could purchase the book. I though the issue was settled. 5 days later, and with no warning, I received a threatening email that they would report me to the IRS because my credit card used to rent the book was unable to get charged. I logged on to the website again to make a payment and there were no options to pay! I was not given a deadline as to when they would report me to the IRS, but was instead told that I had to call an 800 number provided in the email that same day to settle the debt. I received the email at 8:30 in the morning and attempted to call the number they provided to their collections department for 3 hours before I got an answer. I left a voicemail the first time I called and it was not returned. I have never written a bad review for any business, but this company has awful customer service and lack the basic necessities of an online business like a customer service telephone number and a more interactive website with payment options and a more detailed account history. The last email is what set me off. I found it unprofessional and extremely rude. Again, I was given no warning that the credit card on file was not working (a few months ago I got a new card and didn't realize the old card is what I used to pay my rental). And again, when I tried to go online to verify and see if they had the card I used on file, at least the type of card and the last 4 digits, that information was not available, and neither was a payment option. I can't believe this company is still doing business...
