“Great poetry site”

2/27/24

It is way better than a fan story simply because you have more options regarding whether you want to be a paid member or be on the site for free. Fan Story doesn't have the free option.

“Ridiculous bullshit.”

The owner of the website Kevin is a left wing liberal $#*!. Completely dismissed the harassment and trolling bull$#*! I had to deal with another member talking about me and my family, because of his political views he was defending the other member & the "Palestinian conflict"

Idk I find it kind of interesting that one of the main gripes a lot of people are mentioning is that they don't get comments unless they go engage with other users. I mean I actually think that is one of the great things about this poetry community. It seems rather selfish to think you should get to just sit back and play the superstar reveling in praise whilst barely doling any out yourself. "You gotta go and talk to people, get friends and chill..." I mean jeez what a horrible thing. As far as contests go, I was under the impression anybody could conduct one, so why not go conduct the kind of contest you'd like to see rather than condemn the efforts of others. I also just want to add that after reading all the negative comments, I have more respect for Kevin, even if I haven't always appreciated his comments on my poetry, I respect that he addressed many of the negative comments and stayed calm and respectful even with the ones that included personal attacks.
I gave the site 3 stars because I don't find myself drawn to using it much. Maybe it deserves better than that but I tend to reserve four and fives to sites that blow my mind or have some real poignant value to society. I'm also a bit turned off by the amount a pro subscription costs, I mean maybe it's not so expensive for some people but it's an amount I really can't afford. That said, I do appreciate that the site offers a lot to free users. So really that's kind of non-issue. Though, I would like it if free users were allowed to include images within poem posts. In any case, I do recommend the site if you want a nice place to put your poetry and don't mind engaging with and encouraging other writers whilst doing so.

All in all this is quite a good site but I find that the same types of poetry are front page picks. Usually very descriptive poems and the rest are left out. It becomes quite frustrating to put your heart into writing a poem and they are rarely picked. I think I will keep my poems to myself because they never get any positive feedback and it is hurtful.

As for the site. I like the layout itself. Functionality an A+ for a writers platform. Socially it has weak points as people can access others without having proper credentials. It's basically a non credited writers social site somewhat like Facebook or MySpace. Many users are stalkers and target female writers as I heard stories. There is a dominant majority who bully and act as if they are in competition. The group of bully's and stalkers tend to be political affiliated, causing fights and other issues. To finish this review off. Half of the people can't write. Have no writing scheme are self published and to top it off they can't even spell.

Used All Poetry for about 2 years as a paid member. The site did make writing and sharing poems very fun and it allowed users to determine if they wanted more in depth critics or just nice comments.

However, this site needs moderation desperately. The site tries to encourage respectful discourse of opinions across the political spectrum. If certain topics make you uncomfortable, or just don't want to read poems about things like how women aren't people, you could typically avoid them. However, when lines get crossed little is ever done about it. I was part of a non-political writing group and one member went off on another member, calling her every derogatory slur in the book and told her she was rejoicing in the the number of COVID deaths that were taking place. When people in the forum complained, moderators we needed to respect this member's opinion as she continued to harass others in the group. This ultimately lead me to delete my account as I just couldn't enjoy the site anymore, which is a real shame.

Sorry to hear that! Was that the leaders of the group you contacted? The site is moderated, but we don't go looking for trouble, just when folks contact us. Harassment is definitely not tolerated. Please contact the site moderators via the gear icon in the top right then "contact us" with a link to where the problem is and we'll be happy to take a look! Also the ignore list is a great format when there's one user, but we do like to be informed in case they're bothering other people as well. Community members that run small groups can always block an individual user from their group as well.

Many reviews here are negative for all sorts of reasons. My experience was when I inadverdantly made out two paypal periodical payments, Kevin immediateley emailed me to that effect for me to cancell one. So why only three stars? That is because the review is my opinion, and I don't understand 90% of the way and content of poems here. I am old school Australian Bush Poetry where a picture and story is painted by verse, and it rhymes. I am not at all into what I feel in my mind, is disturbed poetry. For anyone else I would consider to be five stars.

Been with AP for about 3 years, you can publish and use the site without a membership. Good site but I feel like my poems get lost amongst the masses and others generally only see your poems if you comment heaps on others or generate a large following that actually reads your stuff.

I've posted some poems to AllPoetry and it's been OK. I feel like there are better more active writing groups out there. It's more of a social networking site than anything else. But nothing terrible.

We're by far the largest, but that's not always the best thing. Some of the best small groups on allpoetry get full sometimes and aren't accepting new members. For me the best kind of feedback comes from a dedicated group where the same people review each others poems each week - you can find that at a local poetry group, or in some of the small groups on allpoetry. There's also a "Trade comments" feature but it's not as good as making good long-term connections...

There are always issues and such. I haven't been bullied on this site but there are somethings I don't understand. I think there are a lot of favorites who win in many contests especially the main ones by Kevin but pure evil because it promotes homosexual and bisexual poets. Wow have to disagree with the evil part. I don't like everything on the site but peoe have been pretty cool to me. I dont care about if they are bi or gay and guess what I'm a Christian and proud of it. Never had troubles with bullies on here. I use to have more trouble over at poetry.com.

Thanks! I try to read most of the major poetry journals to keep abreast of the kinds of work that is being currently published in the non-interent world, then judge the contests with this in mind. The same person can only win once per 6 months, and I definitely look for as many new faces as possible for the finalist list. There are quite a few amazing poets on the site that often end up in the finalist list, though they can't win that often... Thanks!

It's an amateur site and you get the general run-of-the-mill type of writing there. It's mostly a social site, though ironically the site owner recently made numerous changes which curbed many of the things that made the site interactive.

However, if all you want to do is post poorly written poetry and find a few like minded people who will read it and tell you they love it, then it's the place for you.

Its basic membership is free, so that's something,

As a poet I love having free access to a site where I could post my work, it was copyrighted to my Name and I could get some people looking at it. I have over 200-250 poems less than half not even on the site. It was nice to have a place for them other than papers that would eventually get lost.

However, I hate the number of people leaving and how confusing the new update was. I know more people have had trouble with the site now than I have... But I hope things get better because it's still the only poetry site of it's kind out there.

Hi, this is Kevin, the site owner. This was awhile ago and we had a rough time during an upgrade. Things smoothed over though, and now the site is bigger and more active than ever.

I've been a member there since Nov of 2014,
I've been writing poetry for most of my life. Since I was 14 Except for one poem in 4th grade.
I found my writing before AP was in one direction or frame of mind. But I've found my muse has opened up to new styles and flows or words. I enjoy the word prompts mostly. But enjoy the other contests as well.
I've found a lot of help and nice people there. Though some trouble as well
I don't appreciate it when people give medals for my poetry but then are able to take them back and give them to someone else. As I had that happen a few times. I spoke with some of my friends on there and they said that wasn't fair. And they wouldn't have admitted to their mistake or given the other person points, As she was judging someone else's contest for them and even though he asked for any style poems. She only judged a certain style. Even though there were others that were twice as good. (Not including mine) I avoid her contests and won't enter his any more as well. I don't think that should be allowed to be able to undo judging and take something away that was given. I also don't like how I can't copy and paste a section of a poem when pointing out my favorite parts when reading something after posting my own piece Yet I can when wanting to point out things I like or that I notice need improving.

Thanks for the feedback :) Contest re-judging - in the last month or so we added an additional "confirmation" screen on contest judging, so are now no longer allowing hosts to re-judge contests if they do it incorrectly. Each poet runs their own contest, so unfortunately I can't speak to them following requirements they put in, but I do know that *most* contests do a great job - it's just there are so many, that there are some less thorough hosts.

Copy+paste is enabled through all the site except the required "now make two comments" page that is for free members. We had some issues with new members spamming to get past that page and not realizing that we were paying attention.

When submitting a poem for critique, the system forces me to write lenghy reviews on a few poems which puts me off. If the poem is worthy, I will wax lyrical without encouuragement. Therefore, while I understand the conccept, I would rather simply be candid in all reviews, without being tied to a certain predetermined character count.

Looks like you left us 1 star but were complaining about a few poet's preferences?

We let people choose the "question" they'd like people to respond to on their poem - so people who want thorough reviews can get it, and those who just want encouragement can say so. Best of both worlds.

There's a lot of great "Groups" on the group tab for trading critiques if that's more your style. Or just put a detailed question in the field on your poem edit page.
