First off, all the 4 & 5 star reviews here have been created by Abe's of Maine employees. Easy to spot that once you read a couple as they obviously are not bright authors. I was screwed over on two orders in a row. A $1,000 camera order and a $300 tripod order.
Here is how Abe's of Maine works as of 2020. This reflects my experience I just had, twice.
1) You place an order online thinking you found a deal (but really you are a victim-to-be). You are going to feel yourself die a little through this process, so expect that especially when your package arrives. This feeling is because you watch theft happen in front of you but it is too late by the time you realize they are con artists and you have been cheated.
2) After you place your online order, the order gets frozen until you answer your phone from a nice, but nagging sales person. You answer because you want to get things moving and resolve any issues. Who wouldn't be excited for a new Nikon camera or a new $300 tripod?
3) The sales person urgently warns you the camera is out of stock or it is some gray market version only, and then offers an alternative that is as expensive as getting the product from any other vendor. In my case it was a $1,000 Nikon camera they sold me when Nikon sells it for $1,000 too. If you push back they pad the deal with extra stuff like camera lens, SD cards and batteries to make it feel worth it. Some stuff comes with the camera anyway lol! WTF. So you put trust them since it is your first time and you believe no scammers are this up front but the sales guys are crafty, fast and pushy. So when the package arrives I find that they removed the factory Nikon warranty and sold me one of their own (probably fraudulent) 3rd party warranties. Nikon's website did not know the serial number even existed when I checked it on their registry! That cannot be good. The camera did appear new and original so I will take this just as a painful lesson. The accessoires I all found on amazon for a fractions of Abe's price. For example the cheap chinese lenses they provide sell for $399.00 (yup, that's four hundred USD) on Abe's but are $24.99 on Amazon, same part numbers. The battery they sold me for a $49 value on Abe's but is a $4.99 import battery that dies in 30 minutes.
For my second beating it got worse. I placed a second $150 order in because I didn't question the first order yet. I ordered a tripod online and they again followed up with their order stall and scripted procedure phone call. Again, they claimed the tripod I ordered is not good. So I said give me your best tripod and I paid $300 for a 72" high quality one. Well to my "big surprise" it was a cheap plastic Ultimaxx one. It is not even on their website as it is not available, so what did they sell me! I found it online for $18 and $30 on amazon and Rakuten. I stopped looking after about 5 sources of under $40 because it made me sick. They keep hanging up on me when I call for help about any of this. Adam the sales guy is quite a player. I emailed Lisa Berry, some account specialist but havent had any sign of life there.
So they way they work is they attract orders by offering low prices but they never plan to commit to that price. The whole purpose is to get your phone number and credit card number and persuade you into ordering cheap junk from them. How do these people sleep at night?
I am sure they will try to take this review down because it is too truthful. Then they will spin another bunch of fake employee made reviews online. This is so anti-american. Hopefully their business dies from deceit. If they fix this order I will retract this review but I do not expect much.
They will scam you; they misrepresent the item. DON"T believe the reviews on their website. They evidently are from family and friends of Abe's. In 2012, they used to be a decent company. Not sure what has happened but they are out to scam you now. I ordered a Nikon P900 yesterday. This morning, 'Jeff' called to CONFIRM my order, only to tell me that the camera only comes with a 30minute battery and that he has a promotion where he can send me 2 Nikon batteries. Yeah, sure. I called back to confirm and here's the scoop... They upped my $525 charge to $604! 1 Nikon battery and 1 Bower battery ($14 on Bower website). I said to cancel my order; he said he couldn't - it was already processed. And told me if I weren't happy, that to call and get a RMA for return at their expense and he would see that I get every penny back. I called Customer Service; Jason said he couldn't cancel as the order had already shipped (I checked later and UPs had not even picked it up)! Tried for one LONG hour to explain to Jason I ONLY wanted the camera as advertised (with Nikon En-El 23 battery) for $525 *(I used a $10 coupon). He said that was a typo error... Camera doesn't come with a battery! WHAT? Told him to call UPS and cancel; he said it couldn't, it would cost him too much! And informed me that if I return it, it is at my expense and a 15% restocking fee! I said I would just refuse when delivered; he advised me that if I did that, I would be charged orig UPS shipping fee plus insurance, and I would also be charged for return shipping! I am a 74 yr old disabled person... Is this what the world has come to? Taking advantage of those who believe in you? DO NOT BELIEVE the positive reviews you read. They were written by Abes' friends and families. SHAME ON YOU, ABE'S OF MAINE! Shame on you!
"I ordered the Samsung F8500 64" today. I am not sure what to expect from Abe& amp; amp; amp; amp; amp; amp;#039; s. I am hoping for a good turnout with my order. I did use paypal, which gives me a small layer of protection. I will update everyone on what I go through. I guess I should expect a phone call in the next day or two. They have already charged my credit card, so I guess it should had ship already. We shall see. I will give them 4 stars for now and change it either higher or lower depending on the outcome.
Update on May 6th.
Sure enough I received a phone call on May 1st. I had to listen to everything about shipping, warranty and cables. The person was very nice on the phone. He promised me everything will work out perfectly for me. I cave and got the white glove service. I figure it should help me get my TV. Well it is May 6th and I have not received any updates on the TV. I email customer service. I am still waiting for their response back to me. My account states it was ship to the warehouse. I am going to give them the benefit on the doubt for now. It has been 7 days and I am not sure if my TV ship or not. Of course if I call them they will tell me it ship. As the saying goes- The check is in the mail. Lowering my rating for the lack of communication. Let& amp;#039; s see what happens.
Update May 10th
Finally got in touch with customer service. They stated that the TV is not in stock. How can you charge me for something you do not have in stock. They promised me I would have my TV in 7 days. I did not receive it in 7 days, and they are not sure when it will be available for delivery. Please do not charge someone' s card unless it is ready for delivery. This is the only store to charge me like this.
Additionally the FTC state that should a merchant fail to ship by the promised date they must advise you of the new date and offer you a chance to cancel the order with a prompt full refund should you have paid in advance. The details are here, under ‘Delays': -
http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/cons...dit/cre28.shtm
According to Janet Hug of Visa USA, "a merchant is not permitted to bill ahead of time" except in case of a deposit or down payment that the customer agrees to.
I was never advise of my new date and of course I cannot cancel. I wonder why they are allow to break the law.
Oy. Where do I even start?
I found Abe's of Maine via a web search when shopping for a Canon T3i camera. I'd never heard of them before, but the website looked legit and they had the best prices. I placed the order right away using my PayPal account. I should have researched the company before ordering but I didn't, which was a big mistake.
Right after placing my order, I Googled Abe's of Maine out of curiosity and came across a couple of reviews that mentioned their notorious follow-up call and aggressive up-sell tactics. I didn't read further, but I prepared myself to have some hiccups with my order going through.
The next day, I got a call from David telling me I had ordered the import model. My first thought was "aren't all Canons imported?" He said if I wanted my camera to be compatible with US chargers, I needed to upgrade to the more expensive camera. He mentioned something about needing an adapter for the import model, but the crazy thing was he also said the "European" cameras have "pounds" displayed in video mode. As in the currency? That one still baffles me. Oh, and the lens I also ordered was an import model and incompatible. Okay...
I actually told him I'd been expecting his call since I'd read about these calls in some reviews. That seemed to set David off and he got argumentative, asking if I'd read those reviews why order the "import model" anyway? I said I never saw anything saying these were European-only cameras. He said it's clearly listed in the description (the only thing listed is "brand new factory fresh import model." There's nothing in any description saying chargers won't work in the US, or British currency is displayed in video mode... Lies, lies, lies. I kept asking him to cancel my order, mainly because he was being a jerk (and I've since read in reviews that David is supposedly the company's VP -- so that should tell you a lot), but he kept offering me deals. He acted like he was losing money on these deals but he was doing it because he didn't want to lose me as a customer. They'd earn more loyal customers if they'd quit bullying them and write honest product descriptions.
So I finally told him okay, I'd take the deal. He tried to throw in even more extras. I asked him how much the total would be, and he quoted a price that wasn't too much over what I'd paid online. I agreed and we hung up.
When I got home and checked my PayPal account, I found that he had authorized a charge that was over our agreed upon price. It was only then I researched Abe's of Maine reviews and read everything I could about this company, and I was appalled! Not only had they charged me more than we had agreed upon, but other customers had encountered issues like never having received their items, receiving the wrong items, or even suspecting that Abe's is touting knock-offs. After reading all this, and battling with this jerk over the phone, I didn't want them to have my business at all. Abe's was already closed for the day, but I contacted them via their website demanding they cancel my order first thing the next day and give me a refund.
By the next afternoon, my message had gone ignored and they'd updated my Abe's account to say that my items had been sent from the warehouse. I called the customer service number and David's extension several times and could never get through, so I immediately called PayPal and filed a dispute. They handled it from there. I sent another email to Abe's informing them of my dispute, and I said if they stopped the shipment of my order (because they collect restocking fees if you refuse a shipment -- which they can't do according to the PayPal representative) AND refunded my money right away, I wouldn't leave negative reviews all over the web, contact the BBB, or file a complaint with the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs.
It wasn't long after sending my email that a much more pleasant man from Abe's named Frank left me a voicemail message saying he had personally pulled my items off the UPS truck (seriously?) and that he was sending my account to their "refund department." The order cancellation was soon updated in my Abe's of Maine account, but I didn't receive my refund for a week (6 days, to be exact). I stipulated I would go peacefully if my refund was prompt, but it wasn't, so that's why you're reading this review. I honestly don't know what I would have done if I hadn't of paid with PayPal -- they took care of everything.
These people are sharks. Abe's of Maine is an aggressive bait-and-switch operation, so stay away! You won't save any money by the time they call you with the up-sell, and you can avoid a hell of a lot of hassle by making your purchase elsewhere.
The item was exactly as advertised, it was in stock, it arrived when promised, and it was the lowest price I found.
Abe's provided a tracking link and I noticed it shipped the same day I purchased it. Very simple transaction.
Update- I was looking for an on-camera flash for my Canon 6D. I wanted a unit that would make use of the features on my camera. I ordinarily research products that I want to purchase before I buy. The flash normally retails for +/- $550 at camera stores. Needless to say, it's available cheaper on line.
I checked out a couple of on-line guides, and Abe's showed up as a reputable retailer. Abe's had the flash for $319. Others listed a cheaper price and free shipping, but of course when you go to the site they are either out-of-stock or it takes weeks to order. I figured a cheap price isn't any good if they don't have it. Shipping was free, Abe's was less expensive than other reputable sites I've dealt with.
I also tend to research the retailer, whether with a phone order or on-line purchase. I prefer to deal with a retailer that has a real telephone number in addition to the 800 number. I also prefer a retailer with a physical presence, rather than just a web site. Abe's has a store with actual business hours. A physical store is not a requirement, but it is preferable to me. I don't deal with retailers that won't list their physical address or direct dial telephone number; it's just too risky for my money.
Abe's site was easy to navigate, but I knew what I was looking for. The flash was listed in stock with a USA, new, with a USA warranty. I'm not opposed to gray market equipment, but I want to know what I'm buying.
The transaction was simple, I was done in a matter of a minute or so. I got a confirmation email right away, with a tracking number. I got another email when it was handed off to UPS. UPS had the package in less than 24 hours, and I had the package less than 24 hours after that.
The flash arrived as advertised, in it's retail package packed securely in a shipping box. I verified the serial no with Canon to make sure it wasn't a re-furb (it wasn't).
I can't speak about the customer service line because I didn't need it. I don't know where the name "Abe's of Maine" came from because they're in linden, NJ. But I could certainly recommend them as a reputable retailer.
