Go straight to the top to get your refund!

From decades of experience, it has become clear that you can get fair treatment -- and a justified refund -- by going straight to the top to demand it! Writing to customer service or equivalent is often a waste of time, as they have little authority -- and often little judgement, too.
In addition, always copy the firm's top executives (and board members, if known) on complaints, or forward the complaint to them afterwards. You are much more likely to get fair treatment from the top management of firms selling to consumers, and they need to know your displeasure.

Good plan. Also go through bank, credit card, or PayPal where possible.

Great tips, but sometimes there's so many gate keepers that it's hard to reach the people at the top. Also many scam companies employ people on the front line to do their dirty work while they hide behind the scenes pulling the strings.
