Can GotoGate be trusted?

On the 2nd of October 2018, I booked return flights to Frankfurt, through GoToGate.

The outward passage was with Condor and return Cobalt. What was strange with this, is that at the time of booking I was unable to book seats or any additional extras for the Cobalt passage. I was advised by GoToGate to book seats directly through Cobalt's website. When I visited the airlines website on that day, I was unable to locate the flight and the only listed flights went up to the 28th of October.

On Wednesday the 17th of October, Cobalt announced that they have ceased all operations advising passengers not to go to any airport and to seek a refund from their Credit or Debit card agency. On Thursday the 18th of October, I contacted GoToGate and was clearly told not to do anything as GTG were in discussions with Cobalt and I would be contacted in the following 24hrs.

Latter that day my wife contacted our bank and was informed that she would need to know what the Cobalt passage had cost, before any claim could be considered. She called GTG at this time and was given exactly the same advice, as I was earlier. At this point she asked the representative for a break down in costing of the two passages and was initially told that GTG could not share this information. It was only after she pressed on this issue that the representative said that the Cobalt flights had cost €550 of the total €2111. 18 we had paid.

After 24hrs had passed, I contacted GTG and asked the representative why no information had been shared regarding the situation. He explained in a rather abrupt manner that as it was all over the news and social media, everyone should be aware of the situation. He then went on to explain that GTG were not responsible for anything and I should contact my debit/credit card company to seek compensation. I explained without any written or electronic confirmation of the Cobalt passage we were unable to do anything. He agreed to send an email confirming the cost which he now explained was €514, €36 less then my wife had been quoted the previous day.

Basically the flight that GTG took our hard earned cash fr never existed... they are a bunch of crooks.
