Is HomeEscape a scam or a legit company?

Answer:
100% Legit. I use it and it works great. As an owner and a vacationer. There are scams on all of the booking platforms. Home escape allows you to book free directly with the owner, or to take various options for booking insurance (Way cheaper that other sites fees) and then your booking is protected. If you pay Via Home escapes platform (very small fees) Home Escape will hold your payment until you check in. Very safe if you choose it to be protected.
