Its a real website, however crumby! - However, The workers or freelancers there are... - A Breeding ground frenzy of scammers! Almost set up to facilitate them or make it super easy to get scammed and ripped off and no way to get money back - resolution department - You would rather just let the money go, because you won't get it back anyway - just more trouble trying to! STAY AWAY FROM FREELANCER.COM I lost $1500 and was able to get back all but $500 but cost me $5000 in time and trouble! Just go to UPwork.com. much better, logs, timesheet, screenshots of work AND i'm making progress leaps and bounds over Freelancer.com.

They are a scam company which is actually based in the Philippines. They steal as much money as they can, hiding behind bull$#*! terms which they make up as they go. The Philippines is scam central, almost as bad as Nigeria. Avoid these people like the plague. They steal from clients and providers. It doesn't matter which you are. You are paying for the owner of the site's Ferrari if you deposit money with them.

It is a scam to steal your money. They will allow you to deposit funds which are supposed to be to pay freelancers, but instead they will reverse your account into a negative balance and steal your money. You don't see anything for the money. You can report them as fraudulent here: https://www.ic3.gov/complaint/default.aspx

The site itself is real, but everybody on there is a scam and a fraud. I ended up having to close a bank account and open a new one because of their fraudulent Ways.

its a devious site and a place where financial exploitation is waiting to happen on your back. Stay OUT of there. You may need a freelancing model and you can go to Upwork or Guru but what you do not need is freelancer.com. i am suing them later in 2016 as I have suffered financially and i am done with their deliberate financial exploitation,

As the others have said, it's real but it's not legit. It's too easy for clients to defraud you out of money for your work completed in good faith and Freelancer don't really do anything mych to combat this.

If you want a decent site use Upwork. Their platform is better.

The site is real, you can log on and it will take real money from your bank account without any explanation to which you have to log a real complaint. What is fake are the large majority of 'employers' their 'projects' and any helpful customer support...

You can't say its fake but at the same time you can't just trust it fully.
My point here is : people do get things done for the price but when it comes to money/payment , you can not trust freelancer. Sometimes it gets reversed from your account and you won't even get a satisfactory reason for it.
I suffered a loss of 900 USD. All I get to hear that employer had some account issues and we can not disclose this any further.
If you looking to work as a freelancer, go odesk or upwork and any other site first and then freelancer.com.
Small incident: I worked for a client ,designed the logo got the parent for it. Next day when looged in, my account showed negative balance ( payment reversed).
Support : employer have acc. Issues
Client : never came back or responded to any mails.
Result : I worked and still in debt.

They will ROB you!
There is no phone number to call and if there is a problem you will have to hunt them down on all social media sites to maybe get a respond that will make you even more mad
They are requiring that you will send them a copy of your ID
With all the hacks online there is no way people will agree to these terms

I payed with PayPal and dispute all the transactions
It was the only way to get my money back

It looks like your question has already been extensively answered, Ahsan - but just like everyone else said: the site is real (i.e. freelancer.com is a real website, not a "container" or whatever). However, their business practices are incredibly bad. I'm sorry for everyone elses' financial losses on this platform. In my case, I didn't even get to that stage - I noticed something was amiss when they claimed they couldn't verify my identity, and then you have to pay for tests to prove your capabilities.

Just go to Upwork, Guru, or even the old trusty Monster.com, Craig's List, and whatever. Be sure to have a good-looking portfolio site up first, though! :-)

Thanks for your question Ahsan - My experience based on a single project we advertised on the site is that they are not trustworthy - they are not worthy of your trust. They have applied a membership fee on us after a short free time, and I can't see this detailed anywhere in their schedule of fees. In the terms and conditions they say they will advise us and get our consent to any fees etc, but they did not do this. I am sure that the membership fee is detailed somewhere in their schedule but I'm damned if I can find it. It seems that some people are happy with the site, but the great majority of reviews are 1 star putdowns. Like the old saying says Caveat emptor - buyer beware!
